This is possibly the best DIY planer board video on youtube. Terrific job here! Here are a few ideas from a woodworker. I think it might be better not to polish the portion of the steel where the wood will be glued. Any texture in the metal there would help the epoxy to stick better and make for a longer lasting joint. As for hardening the wood, there are a few possibilities. Minwax wood hardener could be applied to the wood early on in the process. It smells like hell, but it does soak into the wood and make it harder. Another idea would be bondo fiberglass resin. This is another product that smells like hell, but the neat thing about it is it cures in a few minutes. Finally, as the top coat on the wood, the best epoxy I know is NuLustre 55. One coat is equivalent to 55 coats of varnish. What must be remembered with all of those options is that they will make the wood heavier, and thus sit lower in the water. Hence using slightly more wood for buoyancy might be necessary. Thanks for an amazing video. I will make your style of diy board and test it on lake trout on a remote northern lake way up in the tundra. :-)

So I finally got around to making planer boards using your superb video. I am still in the building stages. Next will be sealing, painting and final assembly. I was not able to find sheet metal quickly at the hardware store today, but I went with 1/8 lexan, which I have seen used by other people. As for the wood, I had leftover pieces of cedar at home, which is lightweight. Its buoyancy is slightly less than balsa, but I added a tad more wood to compensate. I tested how it floats with the lexan, and it is fine. As far as assembly goes, the lexan I bought is the same thickness as the kerf on my tablesaw blade. I only had to cut a slot into the cedar and the lexan fit perfectly. I glued it in with PL glue (waterproof, tough stuff) and even added three 1/4 inch nylon bolts (for weight...) to tighten things down securely. Now I must seal the wood and work on the "arm" bolt. Thanks again for sharing your project. I cannot wait to give this a swim!

Ta- day I can't believe how many people do not know what planer boards are used for! The boards take your fishing to a hole new level. Easy and effective for walleye trolling, salmon , trout , muskie, even use them catfishing. Boards take your line out from your boat to your desired distance and your lures are set 20' to 30' behind them. Boards can be used with a planer board mast or directly off your fishing rod. Boat noise does not bother your basic trolling patterns, since the fish move outwards away from your boat as you pass over them. As the fish move outwards your baits are basically in their faces and waiting for the fish to strike. Takes patients and lots of experimenting with distance from boat, amount of line out behind planer board, diving depth of the lures etc. Bring a note pad and right every down with each lure ( how deep they dive, color, size of lure, etc) how far out the planer board is out from boat, used a quality down rigging reel with a counter or count how many arm length pulls by hand after you measure a arm length pull 4' or 5'. Takes a bit of know how , and time. Ta-day 4 people gave this a thumbs down (DEC 8 ) , man gives you a idea to catch more fish and this is your appreciation , one thumb down desires one finger up. Love your work sir keep those D I Y ideas a coming. 👍 👍 🇨🇦

I've used epoxy to seal some baits that I made. The slow setting epoxy gave me the best results. Auto paint with the hardener gave me the most durable finish. It was the only paint what would holdup to the hooks hitting the bait. If ya know someone at the auto parts store they may give you what you need. That stuff is expensive but you won't need much. You will need an air brush to spray it on.

These are very similar to the boards I make just that the one's i make are smaller 7x4, i use plastic clip boards to make my boards instead of the metal, everything else is the same, shrink wrap the rod, hammer the tip, nuts etc. only thing is i only use one flotation for a certain side, it's not reversible ... I've been using mine for the last 8 years, pulls wide and nice, i prefer the offshore yellow clip better it's a smaller profile

Hey fish n stuff. I'm making my planer boards today. I wanted to tell you what I used for my rod. I got it all off Amazon. The rod is a carbon fiber rod used in camera equipment. I then epoxied a stainless steel bolt into the rod. I think this might be a killer improvement on your planer boards instead of the heat shrink and dow rod. I love your channel and I plan on using more of your hacks this season! Thanks!!
@FishinNStuff
@FishinNStuff Жыл бұрын
That is an awesome idea . Much better than the threaded rod . I just tried it because on the first planer board I used a really cool aluminum stud . I was basically trying to make it cheaper . But your idea is cooler . Just remember you do need weight on the bottom so it floats standing up . So don't make it too light

@@FishinNStuff Keith if you don’t mind, could you tell me what you think about board size? I saw you made 4x9 and 5x10. I bought a 12x12 piece of 3/16” lexan. I’ve considered making 3 at 4x8 (one to giveaway) and another two small boards at 3x6. With your balsa wood floats do you think they would work for the 4x8’s to pull 1.5oz plus bait for walleye and catfish, and the 3x6’s for smaller plugs like walleye divers and crappie rigs? I mainly fish from my motorized kayak in reservoirs and lakes with very little current.

The acetone bit made me chuckle. It's nasty shit. I used it to damn near wash my hands for about 2 years and noticed that my trigger finger was going numb when I went shooting. Apparently it can cause long term nerve damage, even from inhalation. Still use it to clean up epoxy and resin but wear gloves and try to let the shop air out some before going back in.

@@FishinNStuff yea I do also sadly sold some 12 years ago when I moved to Louisiana and was homeless for few months. But had to sell had a 7 year old daughter we needed a place to stay or cops was gonna kill me. Well take my daughter and they would have had to kill me to take her. But after I sold alot I quit and started giving them away to the kids and selling other stuff and took 3 years got my dis and got little better. But never lost my daughter raised her 17 and half years by my self. Had dad's help little for 2 years she stayed with him when he had cancer she stayed till mom kicked her out and month later dad passed. But I still have alot vintage stuff and once I'm kicked out here be living in a camper prob be selling the rest but to someone who'll no what they got and charish it. I hope. But keep making and helping us learn and smile. God bless

Idea for the balsa wood planers. Use wood dowels glued to hold both sides together. Just an off the top of my head idea. It's all wood so would help buoyancy.
@FishinNStuff

That's a good idea too man , a lot of ppls beeb saying to bolt em on so they are easier to change , but that's the reason for going to balsa so I don't need ti change em as often lol , its still all good ideas though

Nice looking boards! At first glance I didn’t think they would track correctly. All the boards I have ever used or made had a single beveled angle on the front. After watching them in action on your other video I am guessing the position of the release rod being ahead of centre makes them track right or left. Next time I lose a board, instead of spending $60 to replace it, I am going to build a couple of these. New subscriber. ,
