Having watched countless DIY videos for home improvements and repairs, including bathroom remodels, wiring, gas and water lines, electrical, etc. and realizing that about 95 percent of them are either completely useless or missing crucial information it is stunning how useful and on point your advice, recommendations, and descriptions are. Great, great job, as always. PS. My switch plate screws always point up.

I was told by an old plumber that before you caulk the tube you fill it with water. He said a filled tub can settle with the weight of the water and sometimes mess up your finished caulk job.

I have been put in a position where I have to renovate our main bathroom due a failure of the tub drain. I was very impressed with the substance and attention to details that your videos offer and wanted to share what I learned and what I did to overcome some pitfalls that existed in my bathroom that your video did not cover. Like your video, my bathtub and shower are orientated the same way although my main bathroom is on the second level above the kitchen. I found out right away that before we moved in the home was ten years old built in 1990, when I cut out the sheet rock behind the tub and shower faucet to gain access to see the cause and problem to be overcome I exposed a previous patch and when I was able to see the tub drain I found it had been replaced. The tub and shower drain are directly above the kitchen cabinets and now I know why the kitchen was remodeled a few years before we moved in. The water lines for the tub and shower were routed from the side wall away from the shower faucet and around the alcove however where the copper pipes pass through the studs in the side wall, they were not routed through the studs in the back corner to the back wall of the shower, instead they were ran around the inside of the studs in the corner making installation of the wall panel impossible. After pondering how I was going to fix this I decided I would cut the copper pipes where they exit the last stud they were routed through and add pex lines to drop them down to just a few inches from the floor and connect them as they were just lower down so I can mount the wall panel. I also found that the floor at the faucet end of the tub was 1/4" lower than the other end so I had to lay a bed of mortar to remedy this to make the tub level. When the replacement tub drain was installed it was done with a poly pipe kit but was glued so I was not able to remove it. I may end up having to remove the kitchen cabinets in order to access the drain pipe in order to build out a new drain as you did. When I placed the order for all the materials I was sadly awakened to a problem that Home Depot has yet to fix. Until the order is placed there is no alert to inform you of delayed shipping times and locations where the materials are coming from. So the first item I received was the last part I needed and the last part I received was the first part that I needed. One month after placing the order I received the tub and shower faucet assembly and the vanity. Unfortunately, the vanity was shipped without the pedestal feet and this would not do as there is a furnace register underneath the vanity. Needless to say there were many long conversations with customer service that never gave me satisfaction and even when I brought the shortage to their attention on the vanity, they were incapable of offering me any solution that was even remotely good for me. Rather than offer to get other pedestals for the vanity they expected me to settle with a replacement that they had in inventory or wait who knows how long for another vanity to be made and shipped as they said the vanity was no longer in production and that I got the very last one available. Two days later Amazon to the rescue! But Home Depot was not even willing to reimburse me for the money spent to get replacement pedestal feet. I hope to finish the pipe relocation this weekend so I can start re-assembling the bathroom labor day weekend. Thanks for the very informing video content and if you are in the PNW I live in Puyallup Washington and would love to treat you and your family to some BBQ!

Woah Scott! Just finished watching this huge video and where do I even start?! You did a PREMIUM job on that bathroom and for such a reasonable price considering the times we’re going through. I’m also stunned by the amount of skills you’ve got, I wish I could have them too one day! I especially enjoyed the wall color and I personally wouldn’t have done anything different, except for the showerhead which I personally prefer to be a handheld type. Greetings from an Italian guy who’s learning new things about the DIY world everyday and hopefully trying to gain all those abilities myself! Thx for the video and take care mate!

Some constructive criticism with the exhaust fan: I would have vented through the roof and not through the soffit. I also would have used an insulation ductwork, to keep it from condensating with temperature differences between the hot/cold attic and the inside air.
@bgBlea

That might even be code violation in some areas. But if there is no existing vent in the roof it would get complicated quick.

Very informative video. Well explained and video'd. And with the additional in depth videos it just makes it that much better. There is one thing I would have done differently though. Before setting the sink on the counter I would have cut a rectangular hole to include the area of the faucet and drain. This way, if the faucet or drain ever leak or need to be replaced, the sink will not need to be removed since you'll have access from the bottom. Otherwise, great work.

You don't need to wipe down your walls with a damp sponge after sanding before painting. The extra bit of gypsum dust will mix with the primer or the paint and increase the solid content which improves the quality of the finish.

1:08:52 alternatively cut a larger hole in the countertop to provide access. If you need to service the faucet, then you are basically undoing all the plumbing and prying up the entire sink. Just imagine the faucet becomes loose and needs a simple re-tighten, now it's become a huge job.

Any concerns about de-burring a pipe that's vertical? 23:25 when you de-burr, could metal shavings go down in the pipe and then be pushed up into your valve once the water is on? Could you avoid that by using the sharkbite on the horizontal copper and letting the pex do a soft 90 (or do you need a fitting for that)? Great video. Thanks for posting it.

Please share with folks to pull the finish nails by pulling them out through rather back of the trim. That way you don’t damage the face. And I remove the nails as soon as I pull each piece of trim so I don’t step on a nail, most people don’t need to step on more than one nail to never have to go through that again.

I would recommend most people just get rid of the trim as it likely isn't solid wood like this and replace it with plastic baseboards that you can find at big box. They won't swell from the water/moisture over time. They also are nice and clean unlike dinged and rough reused baseboards.

I agree with your final comment on the choice of sink; I think is all looks, zero practical. The splashing is one consideration, but people are careless and the water will be all over the top as the user drips their wet hands to reach the towel. The edges of the sink will catch some of it and that water will run and ruin the top. In my opinion, the design for such arrangement is the biggest, failing item in the project. For a rental, I always think TEENAGERS! What would they do in this space? And you try to take all the precautions ☺️ The looks of the bathroom are a big improvement and looks beautiful!

That would be a great video. I will add it to the list of future topics. Steve has a great channel over at Bathroom Remodeling Teacher www.youtube.com/@BathroomRemodelingTeacher/videos

Why did you need to rip out the subfloor towards the beginning? I just ripped out my tile, and there is plywood that appears to be in good shape. Should i redo mine as well? Great video by the way! Super helpful.

The back of our surround is an outside wall. There is currently plastic vapor barrier covering the stud wall. How do you use adhesive with the plastic in place?

I have a question that may sound absolutely stupid. I've done TONS of carpentry/plumbing/electric/flooring/drywall, but I've MOSTLY worked in existing areas, though I've also helped build houses and not done any of the extra stuff. Do people typically put plywood over the concrete foundation for any reason? My house was built really horribly. Cheapo. Like... They built 30 identical others of my house in one year in my local area. Anyway, the settling of the house has never been compensated for, so I'm definitely just trying to figure out a good way to go about what to do when I finally get done with the other renovations before I go to the flooring.

Just to add, I'm better at drywall than I am at carpentry. I'm still a "pretty good" carpenter, but I'm much better at doing drywall. I'm not one who really deals with the heavy duty stuff, like concrete/foundation building.

They told me $9000 just for a new shower so I started watching the DIY videos. I would need a shit ton of new tools too, but I'm guessing I could do the whole bathroom for $5000 .... but it might take me a decade!!!
