I upgrade my home bench top technique of breaking tire beads, I added a long home made 'bolt' and use an impact to run it down.... much better than the pliers I used last time.

I guess there are probably thousands if ways to break the bead on a tire and then dismount the tire. The easiest way I found was to simply jack up the front of my car & then slide the bad tire & rim under the jacked up tire. Then slowly lower the car and the good tire will easily push the bad tire down, breaking the bead. To dismount a tire I use two tire spoons, as they will not scratch the rim as screwdrivers definitely will. I squirt soapy water along the broken bead, stand the bad tire up so its leaning on my legs with me standing over it and just slowly "work" both spoons along the rim. These two methods work well on all types of rims (aluminum too). It takes about me 10 minutes start to finish to do the whole process.

Yeah, thanks! The trick is getting the tire bead lubed and slipping it into the recess in the wheel, theoretically you should be able to slip the bead over the rim without tools, (which I HAVE done on other videos!) but the tire and bead are too stiff to deform by hand. That's the whole trick, if you're working too hard, you're doing it wrong!

This is one of the first big tires I mounted, things I've learned? Lube both beads when removing and mounting, make sure the bead drops into the "drop center" in the wheel so the bead has slack to get over the edge of the rim, and when mounting start with the valve on the far side, and also remove and mount from the outside side of the wheel! Have fun! ;)

I'm sure others have said the same thing. You are doing the wrong side of the tire first. Flip it over, do the other side then do the back side. The front of the rim is not as deeply seated as the back is, which is why the front is always done first. Good job though, very useful tool and video.
@bobsbarnworkshop5 жыл бұрын
I DO take the front off first, it just takes a few seconds on the first try, The detente in the wheel is very close to the front side, the back side is nearly flat several inches inward, I could never get that side off first... look at the video closely when I try to get the bead off the back, and you'll see what I mean. Thanks for the comment! glad to know someone is watching!

Very cool gadget you made! I use a scissor jack and a 4x4 up to a low cross beam at the back of my garage. I put the base of the jack on the bead, then jack up the jack until I can just slide the 4x4 between the top of the jack and the beam. I have a small chain between the beam and the 4x4 so it doesn't clobber me on the head when the bead breaks. Then I simply jack up the jack and it pushes down on the bead to break it free like "bud-da" [Bronx for butter].
@ridemfast76252 жыл бұрын
Do you think the 4x4 or this videos method pushing on the tire sidewall a lot weakens or damages the sidewall cords inside the tire? I need to replace 4 valve stem and reuse the tires. Only need to break one bead, one side.
@paulromsky95272 жыл бұрын
@@ridemfast7625 I agree. Tires are made to break the bead by pushing on the bead alone - not on the sidewalls which is indeed bad for the tire. Look at the pro tire machines you see in garages and tire shops. They have curved wedges that press down on the bead from the top and bottom at the same time, breaking both beads at virtually the same time. I am going to make a similar wedge and use it on my setup here at home. Great point! I will make it out of curved steel and bolt in to the bottom of my 4x4 with about a 3 inch stand off so only the wedge makes contact with the tire bead area. Harbour Freight has a few models of manual bead breakers, they have the wedge. I may just buy one of their bigger ones and forgo my home brew setup.
@ridemfast76252 жыл бұрын
@@paulromsky9527 This is what I did. Not ideal but imho better than what I have seen. I cut a 4 inch length of 1 x 2, cut a 45 degree angle on one side placing it against the rim, as close to the bead as possible, and curved the piece slightly to follow the contour of the rim. Placed a 2x4 over that, strapped it around the floor jack. Used a 3ft 2 x 8 between the floor jack and the bottom of the wheel. Half of the 2x8 in the rim, the other on the tire. Very very little sidewall deforming and no pressure directly on the sidewall. It does take longer, but worth it for me.
@paulromsky95272 жыл бұрын
@@ridemfast7625 Great idea! Making the wedge out of wood is a good idea, it is much softer than steel if something slips. As far as being slow... I think it is fine... it is not like we take tires off of rims at home all day long. I am going to modify my setup using your curved wedge wood idea. In my case I will bolt the wedge to the bottom of my scissor jack, put the wedge on the bead, put the 4x4 on top of scissor jack to the beam in the ceiling, and break the bead that way. I have a dedicated 4x4 chained to the beam at the back of the garage, I can dedicate a scissor jack I took from an old car for the wooden wedge. I put the tire on the floor, put the jack/wedge in place, put up the 4x4 on top of that, and jack until the bead presses down and breaks. About a minute in all... that works for me. May we should post videos of our methods.
@ridemfast76252 жыл бұрын
@@paulromsky9527 Yes, having the wooden wedge pushed directly by the floor jack will apply pressure better, more direct. I put the wedge on top so I can see everything to make sure it was working because the tires had not been removed in 11 years and were a pita. Be careful using any hardware/screws/nails because if the wedge breaks that hardware could puncture the tire.

Once you break the beads, you can use your bead breaker set up to push down on the bead so it can slip into the rim channel and thus give you the slack you need on the other end of the bead that you pry out with tire spoons.

Just use your head , be safe, you can create a lot of stress and pressures that could cause injury if something flies loose !
@paulromsky95272 жыл бұрын
Great video! But use no water when you mount tires or valve stems like at 36:06. If that water gets trapped between the rubber seal and the rim, it will rust over time and start to leak. If everything is perfectly clean, you should be able to pull the stem through and work in the beads with no soapy water - just work it slowly and use the rim channel properly to make slack for prying. A real valve stem insertion tool works best for this as it gives you better "wiggle control" to work in the valve stem. Wiping it dry is ok, but any water/soap that is still inside the tire may work its way into the bead/lip seam.

On one occasion I broke down a truck tire using a mattocks and a couple pieces of fat 1/4 by 1 inch bar stock slightly ground on the end. The mattocks was old and warm so it didn't damage the tire, I used it like a tire axe. Sometimes called a tire hammer. Using a this type tool requires good accurate swings you don't hit the rim . It is easier to pull the second bead if you stand the tire up gravity helps keep the tire coming out.

I agree, never use soapy water unless you clean it all off BEFORE you put a tire on a rim. The water in the seam and inside the tire will rust the rim lip and cause leaks around the beads. That is why sealers are often used because someone at one time DID NOT clean up all the soap/water.

53 minutes to change a tire, you might be on the wrong bus, looks like the struggle bus, but maybe should be the short bus. good idea about the jig to use leverage, and an impact wrench to break down the tire off the rim. but you should make it out of steel, and instead of using that piece of 2x2 as a shoe, to push the bead off, you could make your shoe out of part of that old wheel, and push off , say 1/4 of the bead all at once, then you wont have to rotate the wheel around as many times to break it loose, also if you don't use a wire brush on the bead, you wont need bead sealer, just soapy water and a rag to clean and dry it off, then wipe it shiny with some old brake fluid and it will seal just fine .

When you got stuck you could rotate the tire and do it again. This is when you spray the entire rim with a Murphy's oil & water spritz. No strain at all.

I know it’s long but I do indeed turn it several times to get the bead to break Thanks for watching!

if you would take a old rim and cut a section out of it it would fit around the rim that you are trying to break the bead on cut it out of the back side

I have 2x12x24 pressure treated wood and just placed on the edge of the tire and let my suv roll over it, bead broke instantly..

You could attach the lower nut to the 2x4 under the wheel instead of attaching it under the bench.

Jeff Gordon yep, great idea. I think I mention in one of my tire videos that it could be made portable. I may build one from metal when I get time . Thanks for watching!
@maynardhyland90844 жыл бұрын
Just put a pair of vice grips on the wheel and it will lock the tie from popping up as you go around with your tire iron on the other side
@bobsbarnworkshop4 жыл бұрын
yeah. I've used a small C clamp for that purpose

Not a bad idea....try some lube once you get the bead initially depressed. Let soak a few seconds and push the bead the rest of the way.

Plate under the rim instead of worktop would do same job no?

Gaetan Marseille hey any way you can figure out is fine. I’m thinking of making a portable unit with a board on the bottom to do just what you suggested. Thanks for the comment!

@bobsbarnworkshop4 жыл бұрын
Keith G mason yes, I suppose I could, originally the rod was installed to change motorcycle tires. Thanks for watching and commenting

The wife's hair conditioner works great as bead lube. Sneak it out of the house in a dixie cup.

Just go to harbor freight or Northern Tool and get a manual tire changer mount it on your floor and break tires down and mount them without all the time wasted on parts lumber and brains.

Hey Bob, Just one more quick comment. I noticed your were mig welding without a shielding gas. go back through your welder manual and set up for flux core rig. you will have much better welds.
@bobsbarnworkshop2 жыл бұрын
That’s literally a $79 welder, flux core. 4 voltage settings and wire speed is all it has. I have a gas shielded welder now, much better welds.

You might want to show the "hump" you refer to on the wheel itself. It is called the "drop center" in tire lingo.
