DIY Boat Project: The First Upgrade I Make To Every Boat!

Today we're doing a simple project that every fishing boat on the market should do. Boat Buckles are a retractable rod strap that hold your fishing rods in place when the boat is moving and conveniently store inside the gunwale when you stop. Most used boats have bungee straps or old velcro straps and are desperately in need of an upgrade. Watch step by step as Matt installs a set of Boat Buckle straps.
We just picked up CC's new boat, a used Champion 198. Any time you purchase used boats you know there will be some work involved. The Boat Buckles are just the beginning as we plan to upgrade the batteries, trolling motor, electronics, and wiring in the coming weeks. We do these first because its a mandatory upgrade on all our boats, its relatively inexpensive, and can be done very quickly with minimal tools.
A lot of anglers are afraid to work on their own boats. There is something taboo about pulling off a motor cowling and going to work. While some jobs really do need a boat mechanic, a job like this can be done quickly and easily at home. Below are links to the parts we used for this upgrade. I always work on my boat. Expect like you said when the motor needs work. I let the pros do that. But as far as the boat goes I do everything on mine. It’s something you feel proud of when you use it. Take your time research whatever you are doing so you have an idea how and try.

Thanks for this video. I always have wanted to upgrade rod straps but as stated have been to scared to drill into my boat. This gave me confidence to make the upgrade. 👍

I upgraded mine many years ago and am glad I did. The old plastic hook latch that was on the deck on the original bungee caused a wicked stone bruise on my heal when one day a stepped just right on it. That junk was off my boat the next day. Never looked back.

You are right mat besides the engine you can do everything else. I even maintenance my own engine. With the videos out there today you can save money by doing it yourself.

I know that you know the Champion layout well Matt but one thing you forgot to mention is to check for any wiring or other obstructions inside the gunwale that needs to be protected or may even prevent the mounting of these buckles before you start cutting.

You're right Steve. We work on these Champs a lot so I knew there were only trolling motor wires and light wires back there with inches to spare, definitely should have talked about that.

I kinda laughed when you said bass fishermen are scared to drill into their boats, I live in central Ky and there’s a lake with a bunch of flooded timber and most of the guys with a nice shiny boat are scared to get into the thick stuff to fish where trees might scratch or scuff their boat, and that’s where some big ones are! I watch them all the time just cruising through on the outside and I’m snaking through in a 14 ft 1987 Glasstream catching fish!

On my Astro, there are wires for the trolling motor on the same side, so just be careful wires before cutting or drilling holes just as a precaution.

Hey matty gr8 contents always. Just bought my first boat yesterday Has some very minor leaks at the seams at the rear lf the boat and some rivets. Whats youre take on repairing it, saw a few vids on utube. On brazing, and using marine epoxy etc which method would you recommend. Also the benfits on bow mounts and outboard trolling motors, pros and cons?? Thanks

Make sure there are no wires behind the place you are drilling or cutting. My TM cables run through that spot. Nice video!

Just a tip for anyone doing this.....the plastic clip that allows you to attach the retractable side to the boat surface, has a small gap allowing you to remove it from the sewn loop. Once you remove it from the loop, you can slide the conversion kit piece in, keeping it from retracting too far. Then you mount it to the boat and put the plastic clip back into place. Hope this helps

What about co angler strap in the back. There is no way to reach behind fiberglass in the back. What do you suggest for that? I don’t want the nice rod buckles up front and the old skinny one in the back.

I’m an automotive technician so I enjoy working on my boat, and it helped learning how to tear down an engine and rebuild it when I got an old evenrude outboard from my grandpa that had an internal failure. But it truly isn’t hard to work on a boat just like you said Matt! Btw, could we get some kayak videos please? I’ve started kayak fishing a lot lately

Afraid to drill holes😂 I cut two feet of the bottom out of my skiff last summer with a Skill saw . Then again I understand not everyone is mechanically inclined .
