How to make your own tap dance floor at home -- affordable & easy to make!
I already sell a wonderful tap dance floor through my website (www.tapdancemadeeasy.com) that is manufactured/portable/light, but it is a pretty small footprint (30"x48") which has its pros and cons. I've wanted a larger sized one for a while, so I gave this project a go with the help of my crafty friend Don (with an assist from my boy CJ).
Materials used (all can be purchased at a major hardware store, and the total was around $100 for everything):
(1) 4'x4' plywood (I am using 3/4" thick, you can also use 1/2" if you need it to be lighter; I had mine cut for me at the hardware store; make sure you measure your usable space to determine best size for yourself!)
(2) sandpaper / sanding option
(3) Playmat/rubber mat squares to approximately match the size of your floor (small gaps are ok, you can also build it with gaps for louder volume)
(4) box cutter/knife/scissors to trim playmat edges
(5) Gorilla glue (or similar)
(6) Polyurethane (they sell various stains/finishes, for this I used a clear matte water-based style; they also sell ones more suited for floors but I just went with a basic one for this and will see how it holds up).
Happy Tapping!

Just finished making this, thanks to your video. I got a 4x8 cabinet-grade and stained it cherry, then 3 coats of oil-poly. Then glued the foam mats. Sounds much better than vinyl flooring.

You should not put Polly of ethylene or whatever it is on the top of the floor it makes it too slippery

How did the clear matte, water-based polyurethane hold up? Were you happy with it or would you recommend a different finish like gloss, semi gloss, or satin instead?

But what type of plywood? Hardwood? Soft wood? Pine? Birch? Does it matter??

Thank you for this amazing video!! I've been researching DIY tap dance-boards... some suggest additionally gluing a piece of flooring laminate to the top instead of the poly varnish. Do have an opinion on that? I'm a complete novice tap dancer, so just not sure if the laminate flooring on top might be helpful? Thanks!

Would have loved it if you had someone dance on it to hear how it sounds. What type of wood did you use?

They used plywood. I totally agree with you. To hear the sound would be interesting. Some people don't cover the whole ply wood sheet with rubber mats for the sound to escape...🤔

Do you think this would have worked as well with 1/2" ply, or is the 3/4" really needed for strength. It's so heavy!

I bought the 3/4" and made it 3'x4'. Ya, it's still heavy. I glued on straps to carry it. I didn't use Polycrylic bc I can't find it here, but used urethane.

It was around $50...they sell cheaper ones (veneer/particle board etc), I went with a nicer solid one, plus using the thicker 3/4” instead of 1/2” bumps the $ up. Hope that helps - Eli
