Calendula Salve Recipe:
½ ounce (about 2 T) beeswax
2 ounces (about 4-5 T) calendula infused oil*
Optional:
5 drops Cedarwood essential oil
3 drops Bergaptene-Free Bergamot essential oil
3 drops Lavender essential oil
A few drops of Vitamin E oil
Instructions:
1. Place beeswax in a double boiler OR a small heatproof bowl on top of a saucepan with an inch or two of water. Heat on the stove at medium-low.
2. Add infused calendula oil and stir to combine and melt completely.
3. Remove from heat and add essential oils and vitamin E (if using). Stir together.
4. Pour mixture into a clean, dry container and allow it to cool completely. For a faster set, place uncovered container in the refrigerator.
*To infuse dried calendula into coconut oil (or other carrier oil)
You’ll need:
Dried calendula flowers
Coconut oil (melted) or other carrier oil of your choice
A clean, dry jar with lid
A small dish rag
Crockpot
Cheesecloth or coffee filters
A mesh strainer
The process:
1. Fill the jar about ¾ full with dried flowers, leaving room for them to expand as they soak.
2. Pour liquid carrier oil over herbs to cover completely. Leave at least an inch of headspace from the top of the jar. Secure the lid.
3. Line the bottom of a crock pot with a small dish rag and set the jar on top. Add water to the crock to surround the jar, filling to about the neck of the jar. Leave the lid of the crock-pot off!
4. Turn the crock-pot on WARM (or the lowest setting available) to bring the water temperature to about 100*F. Allow herbs to gently infuse overnight (or anywhere from 8-24 hours.)
5. Remove your jar from the warm bath and dry with a dish towel to prevent water from dripping into your oil.
6. Place a fine mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth or a coffee filter over a clean jar or bowl. Pour oil through the strainer and allow the oil to drip out, gently squeezing the cheesecloth/filter as necessary to extract the oil. Some sediment may still be in the oil. Strain again if desired.
7. Pour the herb-infused oil into a clean glass jar and allow to cool completely before sealing it with an airtight lid. Store in a cool dry place.

Pretty cool! I just have the suggestion that the flowers remain some weeks in the oil before bowling it? It shall absorve more the esences?

LOVE THIS!. How do you clean up everything? I would imagine it solidifies on the bowl etc.

Good question! Sorry I’m so slow to respond. I try and clean up asap before the wax gets too hard. First I wipe out the bowl to remove what I can with a paper towel/scrap tissue paper/newspaper/etc. Then I pour the leftover simmering water from my double boiler pot into the bowl and spatula to melt and rinse off what’s left. Then I can easily wash with soap and water like any other dishes.

With coconut oil being solid at room temperature, if I substitute it with jojoba oil, would the end product be firm enough? Or would it need more beeswax? I will definitely be trying this recipe once I can source some dried calendula.
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger 3 жыл бұрын
Excellent question! You’re right that a salve made with an oil that is liquid at room temperature will be a bit softer. However, there is a pretty high percentage of beeswax in this recipe, so the same measurements will still produce a product that is solid. I will say that in this video, my kitchen was quite warm maybe close to 80*F. So when it got a bit colder, it firmed up a little more with this coconut oil/beeswax mix. Therefore, you could expect a salve made with your jojoba oil to look kind of balm-y like that when it’s at a slightly cooler room temperature. All this to say, when you use a liquid oil, go with this proportion for a softer/balmy salve. And increase the beeswax a little for a more solid/harder salve. (But either way, it should still remain solid.)

Hi! How long would this have to be left on a low setting pls? As only have hi or low settings..thanks
@TheCrunchyGinger
@TheCrunchyGinger Жыл бұрын
Test the temperature of your low setting with a crock full of water first. You just want to make sure it hovers around 100F so the herbs don’t get too hot and start to fry.

Can I use fresh calendula flowers?

I would recommend using dried flowers so that the water content is removed. This will prevent mold from forming in your infused oil and salve.
