DIY Cat Litter Cabinet

I made a permanent home for the cat litter in an unused cabinet. The litter box kept having to be moved around so this was a great solution to a little annoyance. Now our cat "Gus" has a dedicated place of business. Take a look at how I converted a lower cabinet into a cat litter closet. Enjoy!

Every home, and especially apartment, with a cat should have something similar to this, a built in little litter box room. It’s 2020 and we still don’t have a good spot for litter boxes.

my cats wont even use a litter box that has a lid on it. They would never go in the cabinet and if one did the others would just bully him and not ever let him out again.

I keep mine in the laundry room of my rental, but it still smells. That room does have it's own fan though. Problem is it's kind of out of sight and doesn't get cleaned as often as when I had it in my bathroom at my old house. And lot of rentals don't have a laundry room

The door wasn’t bolted in yet, which is why the hole was on the left. When he screwed in the door, the hole is on the right because it had to be flipped around...

I had a litter mat at one point that said wipe your laws on it. I can't remember if that was the Dollar tree one or the fancy litter trapping one for $4 bucks at Walmart. They do help but aren't perfect. Bed Bath & Beyond gas an actual litter cabinet you don't have to diy? Nice! But I bet it's expensive.

I used to have cats and dogs. Of course the dogs wanted to not only eat the cats food, but also eat their poop. Someone down the street was remodeling their kitchen , so I salvaged a 3-door base cabinet. I pushed the base cabinet up against a wall, that butted up against a wall in my laundry room. I bought a "cat" door at the pet store. What made it a "cat" door was that it had a magnetic latch on the lower part of the door, activated by a mouse shaped magnet that went on the cats collars like a rabies or name tag. Only the cats, (with the magnets on their collars) could activate the latch on the door. I jigsawed out the panels on the base cabinet doors and stapled screen over the openings. I kept their food at one end, and their litter box at the other end. Cleaning the litter box and feeding them happened from the garage side. I left my garage door open most of the time I was at home except after dark and in the winter. The cats spent most of their time in their "veranda" enjoying being outside. It was a great solution to not have the mess and smell of the litter box inside my house. When the house was sold, the buyers had 2 cats and thought the system was ingenious. I left the magnets for their cat"s collars because I had to buy a new cat door for my next house.

Cats actually like to be able to see outside of their litter box, so they can run away in case of danger.

@@sweetcanada17 I was about to say that too even though I'm sure the poster was joking. I just wish mine would at least give me some privacy when I go. I raised mine from infancy. They trust me completely. That's really nice until decide to use the box near your toilet when you're using the bathroom. And if they aren't using the box then they're laying on my clothes or in the sink. Or wanting attention. Occasionally one will take his milk jug rings into the tub to play as well. Spoiled little turds. Very cute & cuddly turds. But still turd at times.

@@sweetcanada17 My cat goes in a closed cabinet. Adopted her as a rescue, she was familiar with outdoor dangers early. Never had a problem with her using a litter box in a closed space.

In past, whenever I brought a new kitten home, I simply dropped it into the litter box. Knew where it was even if moved. Cats love small places so they'd be sure to discover it soon enough. Cool idea. And loved the suggestion for outside vent...perhaps a lit fan to assist. And yes, motion detection for led light. All to gild the lily!

You should put a colored trim around his little cut out door so he can see the exit. Beacuse he can't see it with the whole "door" being clear, it can be confusing for the cat. Great job though on the kitty litter hid away spot, that was a great idea and it looked great once completed

DangerX6 Angel9 cats have very bad eyesight at close distance. you can see the cat smelling the fresh air to tell where the entrance is.

Would be cool to put a slide out base the box can set on so when you clean it all you need to do is slide it on out and back in again instead of straining.

I used to clear out the bathroom undersink cabinet, removed the doors, hung a curtain on a tension rod and viola! it worked out great! Bonus: proximity made it easier to keep the box cleaned at least twice a day. My cat loved it!

I have a similar set up on a bookshelf in my living room. Bottom shed has a privacy curtain and litter box, I put a fancy chair next to the shelf so usually no one even knows it’s there. If only I could say the same for the other 2 boxes clearly visible next to my toilet and fridge. 😭

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 Chloe our dog we had years ago was just like that she was spoiled on treats she learned she went potty she got a treat she behaved while getting a bath she got a treat if she wanted a treat after a storm was gone she had to come out she hid under my bed when parents weren't home mom was the only one that could get her out from either their bed or mine without treats and we had to put a couple of treats on top of her food or else she would sulk only one time she didn't get a treat with bath time but that was because she wouldn't listen to me at all she misbehaved in the bath same with drying which we had to give her 5 minutes to roll she wouldn't let us dry her with a hair dryer long hair dog she hated being dried by a towel but loved the dryer cause we let her roll while we dried her on the spots we could reach while she rolled usually she lay still to let us dry enough of her in one spot but that day she refused to hold still so she got no treat and this was a treat loving dog she went and sulked everyone was like why didn't you give her one I said she wouldn't behave the whole time taught her a lesson cause after that she behaved

I would have just left the original doors and made a cat hole in it, trimmed it up then you couldn’t see the litter box inside. Cute kitty!

That's what I was thinking! The clear door kinda defeats the purpose of hiding it away. Cats don't need the light, but if you wanted to go overkill you could find a battery power motion sensor light for inside from some Chinese site like banggood. Very nice workmanship, tho! I want that kind of finishing skill on my house projects.

I know cats can see through the dark at night. But just to be safe, in case you turn all lights off during the night, you should put a small light inside the cabinet for the cat.

@@mariahr8595 Cats only need 1/6th of the light humans do to see in the dark, however if it's completely dark they cannot see. Just google it and inform yourself, it's not that hard.

They make the motion activated puck lights, but really just a nightlight in the hallway would be way more than enough. Cats see by movement, and are not as dependent on light, like the inferior (all of us!) boom and. Not to mention, before long it becomes a sensory movement; I sleep in an eyemask and can manage a pitch black potty break if needed. Kitty will be fine if he knows the way, and they have done an excellent job of reinforcing that. Kudos!!

Lovely Biscotties unless you are in a cave underground, you will never experience pure darkness. Cats don’t need nightlights, and in fact putting a light in such a small space might mess with their night vision for a while.

The thing is .. your litter should be in the most commonly occupied room of the house. Where ever that is .. for me its the office .. most families its probably the living room. I see this stuff and then ppl complain about inappropriate peeing ..

If you're seriously thinking of doing that you need to clean the litterbox WAY WAY WAY more often. If even a human can smell it, it would be awful for a cat with their much more sensitive noses to have to go in there. And they even have to step in it.

I took a huge 3'X3' heavy night stand, removed all of the drawers & hardware. The litter box is completely invisible. I also discontinued using a traditional cat litter system. No odor, no mess, no tracking NOTHING! Scoop The Poops once a Day.. Happy Kitty Mawm... Happy Kitty Boy... You have such a Darling Kitty.. Such a Great Idea & that worked out beautifully... Nice work!! 💕✌️😊😻🐾🐾💕

My house has laundry machines in a closet in one of the bedrooms, there’s still plenty of closet space next to it but I use that room as a den and put a covered litter box on a table to keep the dog out. I like not having to bend down to clean it, and the table is big enough for extra litter and a bag of food in a sealed container as well as a small lined can for box debris. Closet has 4 sliding doors on a track so I just keep one from closing with a block of wood. I have a bathroom mat in front of the box but she still manages to spread litter onto the floor.

I have rented for a long time & have always had a problem figuring out where to put the litter box. Last time I moved, I picked my rental home based on where I could put the box. Fast forward to today ... I'm currently designing my first home & after seeing your video, I'm going to work on incorporating a space like this for my cats litter box. Lucky Gus! Goodo Dads for making such a nice WC for your gent. I know this is specific to your home space so 99% of us don't have a similar space/spare closet (and surely not the skills! Fantastic work!!) but this does give great ideas. I have a pre-bought hutch that works well in my tiny/awkward bathroom (though not near as classy) and it accommodates an ample feeding station on top. Warning though, I live in a more rural area so my cats tend to wait at the back door and get let out for business, like a dog would. They only use the box on cold/rainy days and nighttime emergencies, so keep an eye on things if you have a sick cat or "sprayer" or "high kicker". Poop cabinetry/furniture is SO in for 2020 for our spoiled babies! 😹🎉

A trail of catnip into the space probably would have worked, too. Very nice job. And, btw, as someone who's been in cat rescue for 15 years now, I'd highly recommend you wash down walls inside with soap and water about once a week. Invisible droplets of urine rise up and get into walls. Over time, the space could well start reeking of urine even though you have some ventilation with door and top part of acrylic. I learned this the HARD way by having my drywall start smelling of cat urine even thought my cats were using the litter box and not peeing on the wall/drywall.

Nice job 👍 My litter box is in the basement, but as the cat ages and can't do the stairs as well (or gets kidney problems and has to go more frequently) this will be a nice alternative to keeping the box in the bedroom. I keep a laundry hamper in the bottom hall closet, that can go anywhere else and that spot is perfect for something like this.

Love this idea!!! Food for thought! I would have made a plastic swing cover out of clear vinyl for the opening to help contain the odours better. & a colored plexiglass, to add a little pop of something & some discretion. Love it! Definitely gives me some ideas ❤

Well done this is a great idea, all I would add is a little sensor light, but thats because its my cats preference (or mine 😁). Gus' own private bathroom 😎

Nice build! I would use some of the space over the litter box for extra storage, like cat litter and such.

Gus is such a cute kitty. Also, I liked how you did a test run with the door on the left, then installed it with the door on the right :P I thought he was going to get so lost!
