I built a plywood gravity fed chicken feeder that holds 50lbs of feed because I got tired of filling their old feeder every other day. Hope you get some ideas from this, so you can build your own.

i know this vid is 5 years old, im late to the game, but a french cleat on the back to attach it to your tractor/coop would eliminate the problem of the hinges on back. it would also make it easier to move or remove if you choose. Great work on all your designs Pete, appreciate you sharing them.

Thank you so much for sharing this great build. I built 4 of these already, 2 for my brooder and 2 for my chicken wagon. 50lbs and 80lbs capacity. And if anyone's wondering, you can also use 1/2" plywood rather than 3/4" for the entire build. Works just as great and it's lighter.

I'm so glad your video is still made available to view. I needed something geniously made to solve my future problems with chicken feeders ie, which one be the best performer and less hasell with time feeding every other day etc. My plan is to be homesteading by year 2021. Your video has inspired me to copy your method. It's very sufficient and I can extend its feeding capacity to a larger feeder per number of chickens. Thank you for your great idea. You are truly self made!

This is just about exactly what I plan on doing, I’ve already made something similar out of a 15 gallon round drum, I can put about a bag and a half in it and it last 2 weeks give or take, only problem is I want something more compact against the wall, I’ll make one like this one, probably only 8” out but 24” wide, maybe a center divider for support

To make your divider to prevent "digging and splashing" don't use plywood. Use Round Head Screws or Flat Head screws, 3 1/2" - 4" long. You want the thread-less shank to be just Under 2" long, and the rest threaded. Screw them in every 1 inch, starting 1/2" below the upper rim of the lower front plywood face. Drive the screws into the second panel, and continue on thru, until the head bottoms out on the front panel. The thread-less shank will span the feed opening, and the threaded part of the screws will extend inside of the feeder, which is no problem, since it's protected from the birds. Even better if the screw points just poke into the back wall, without going thru to the outside. The 1" spacing of the screw shanks is close enough to keep the chickens from splashing the feed, but wide enough to allow them to peck the grain. Simple, cheap, easy, and effective.

I don't get mice in the coop because it's sealed up pretty good and I'm sure the chickens would kill them but I do get ants sometime. So I do spray around the outside of the coop and under the coop on the wood so when the ants crawl over it, they die.

Again - you've gone to a lot of work for your birds! Nice! If you're still monitoring messages - did it work out long run or become a nuisance for maintenance and cleaning? I'll be close to the woods - I don't want to attract rodents with trapped feed.

also, if they flip feed out, you could run a piece of half round on the inside of the front so they can't scoop it out so easily. I'm interested to see how this works for you - please do a follow up in a year to let us know! and thanks for the great instructions on how you built your feeder.

They usually feed two or three at a time and use the feeder through out the day. I've had no problems with them throwing feed out at all, and the feeder has been working better then I had expected. There's really no need to put a cover over the feeder at night because they are roosting anyways so they don't feed out of it at night. Here's a video I did in September that shows a lot of the inside of the coop. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m7qkltWHr9PJYKc.html

Wow don't really know what to charge, you'll have to figure out the materials and time you put into it. The dirt bath is just a plastic tub you can buy at home depot the type you mix mortar with and add a bag of play sand and a cup of diatomaceous earth.

So how is it working as far as the chickens making a mess throwing the food all over the place. I would like to make a larger version.

Not in my coop, it's 2ft off the ground and the chicken run is screened up tight.

Would it be Better. to cut 3 inch off the top of your led . then put 3 inch strip you cut off . on the top of your feeder led opening . then hing your led off of the 3 inch strip . then you can mount your feeder flat to the wall . & when you open your led to put your feed in it . you can let your led lay on the wall & it will stay open till you close it .

Did you think about hanging the feeder using a French cleat

Great idea! If I have to take it out for what ever reason, I'll install that system.

I was going to suggest the same thing, but had to scroll all the way down to see if it had already been posted! Glad I did so....that way I don't look like a redundancy idiot.

Thanks for uploading a useful video, however, I cant see how this design will prevent rodents from enjoying chook food.

Rodents don't get into my coop because it's two feet off the ground and 1/2 inch hardware cloth all around the coop and run.

Thanks, my coop and run are pretty mouse and rat proof so they don't get in there.
