This is a good idea adding ventilation. Maybe caulk the inside of the hole so it doesn’t get wet and possibly moldy inside.

I love these ideas that people like me (a power-tool weenie) can do. I have chickens and we converted a lawn tractor shed. We insulated the walls because we get such cold winters (-30) here in the mountains.

Can you show how you did that. I’m not understanding. Those wasps get everywhere. Sometimes I can barely go do my lawn they’re everywhere as well as in their run but I managed to get that nest down. I just don’t get how wire around the shed will prevent them from getting inside they fit thru everything.

I put a screen to cover 3/4 way but also it’s a problem for me to enter daily to get the eggs I have to move the run back so I can get inside. Any ideas appreciated.

We ended up doing something similar! We went with a quarter inch wire mesh and drilled them onto the wall and held them there with a screw and washer, it works great! How does the tape hold up? That stuff is pretty strong if you get the surface clean before hand!

I have the same thing but it is fully insulated. I’m not sure how or why I would add ventilation.. maybe an air filter. On my shed, there is a layer of foam underneath foil bubble wrap insulation. They do not eat the foil but if they see any styrofoam, they will go for it. They will also tear up cardboard so don’t use that to cover the foam. I also have a small temperature controlled heater mounted inside, which keeps them above 60. Most of my chickens are from Indonesia, which average temp is 70f. Raising chickens is a learning process but most people take a lazy, careless approach.

I’m not sure how bad it gets there, but here we hover close to 0 degrees Fahrenheit and get some pretty heavy winds coming off the Rocky Mountains. With that weather our birds have done great! When I first got chickens we used to use a heat lamp.. and then realized it was a safety hazard and chickens can actually handle REALLY cold weather pretty well!

Here is the link to the 3” hole saw amzn.to/3C66sPD Here is a link to a saws all that is what I would use to cut a window into a shed amzn.to/3poyRZy As for the insulation… that would probably make it too hot in the summer. Chickens do MUCH better in cold than in the heat. If I were you I would definitely build it to be cool in the summer rather than warm in the winter. I hope that helps 😂. In the winter it’s easy to add a deep mulch layer and things like that to keep it warm, but there isn’t a whole lot you can do besides ventilation to make it cool in the summer. Good luck on your build!

I hate it when people say chickens can handle pretty cold temperatures. They are jungle foul not winter foul. Key word jungle environment. Even though people force them to handle it they have no choice they don't like it at all when it's really cold. This is why there combs get damaged in the cold. I see a lot of chicken videos with comb damage to their chickens from winters. People don't care enough to prevent this damage. They just say, OH the chickens can handle it. Such wrong thinking.
