Today we bring in special guests (and amazing DPs) Daniel Routh and Joe Simon. Both Daniel and Simon have a massive amount of experience and talent - so we decided to challenge them to get some cinematic shots using only the lights they had in their house.

Really inspiring to see how professionals can light a scene using only what they have at home. I think if more people knew how much of a difference good lighting can make, they would focus less on constantly upgrading cameras.

Paint is also a great tool - go fullscreen and simply use a fill with the color you'd like to reflect. It works incredibly well, especially with laptops!

I randomly came to watch this vid and wow, I hadn't realized before how important the lighting is! And how it isn't that easy to achieve a good lighting. I have watched a couple "cinematography and lighting" videos, but I think this DIY way of showing it finally clicked it for me! Thanks!

@@BloodClanResurrection I don't think a phone alone would give you good visuals but I've shot some video using an iPhone XS Max, Beastgrip DOF Adapter MK2, Cinema Lens, Filmic app and the quality is pretty unbelievable. You would never think the footage came from a phone. But obviously you need to have the right lighting eq and know how to in order to get the best out of it.

What this does is show the techniques, which is something I'm really trying to get to grips with is lighting for a scene and lighting for character movement. So these rooms look great from the angle at which they are shot at but you couldn't film in there with characters moving around as you would see all the lighting equipment. This is something where the script is so important. Did start shooting a small film before the lockdown and it's on hold right now. Lighting is such an art. It's also trying to communicate that with the people I'm shooting with. All our first film. They said we should have this shot done in an hour... lol took me an hour to set up and get it right lol and I still want happy with it but turned out great.

OMG RYAN! Thank you so much for putting this video together and out there for us. First off, a great message with helping those in need. Second, I love that even though we are creators locked inside, there is always a way to still be creative with what we have. That brings me to my third thanks because I am a teacher at a media school and my next class is going into TV Commercials. Now, these students attend this school because it is hands-on right when you get in the door. Now that we are in this situation, they are attending classes via web meetings. This video gives me a lot of ideas and is a great resource for these aspiring media gurus. Thank you, thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you!

Amazeballs as usual. I actually have tested positive for COVID-19, but I'm one of the lucky ones that feel fine after only two days of symtems. However, as you can imagine, I'm less popular than Cosby at the moment due to my positive standing. So, being isolated at home alone has been a creatively crushing and less then inspirational. So now after watching this video, I have something to look forward to without having to leave the house. Sadly all my "video gear" was left at work. But now you've inspired me to use what I have at home. Thanks again. You guys always rock.

When we filmed our final project for university I was on lighting, the DOP insisted I used all the lights we had booked from the Uni, instead some scenes just need natural light and a single bounce, I found even creating limitations helps improve a look, too much gear can hurt

I was wondering how filmmakers simulate lightning reflecting onto the walls and furniture at night and was looking at ways how they do it in post, as it is obviously not always practical to wait for a real-life thunderstorm. Turns out that the flickering TV trick is MUCH easier to do this: hook that TV to a computer, and use a program to let it flash white on the whole screen like a lightning would do. Will have to try that!

Mind blowing video! Very creative, if you have the possibilities of accessing a complete set of professional lighting, doing these types of exercises are very important, they help us to think out of the box, and if you does not have access to profesional light´s is not an excuse, the important thing is knowing how to work with what you have. To control de light, to paint with light. Thank´s you, Daniel Routh and Joe Simon. I´ll see you in your nex video! cheer´s!
