DIY Cleaning the MAF Sensor - Toyota Fortuner
In this video I'll demonstrate how to clean MAF Sensor of the car, its a very important and delicate sensor in our vehicle.
The Mass Air Flor (MAF) is a critical component of automobile engine to calculate the air mass / air density going in the engine, and ECU takes various of these values to perform combustion and other activities. Just like a dirty air filter could lead to poor performance, a dirty MAF could also lead to wrong values send to ECU resulting in low performance of vehicle. Once in a while you could clean the MAF. In this video I demonstrate DIY method of cleaning the MAF - using IsoPropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol). Buy this from local chemist shop, its quite cheap. (I got this 400ml bottle for INR 200). You may also use specialty MAF Cleaner Sprays (generally costly), or even try Electrical Contact Cleaner Spray cans (cheaper, made with IsoPropyl Alcohol itself).
Carefully disconnect the wiring and remove MAF sensor, gently clean the terminals (very delicately) and allow it dry. don't use any force or pressure, don't touch those terminals (tentacles).
In this video I have shown MAF Sensor cleaning for Toyota Fortuner, however the basic principle is same for other vehicles too.

You may have to clean MAF sensor if mice enter the air filter box and eat away the filter element 😂. It happened with me. Was expecting engine damage due to torn filter, but nothing happened.

Hahhaa, that would be so weird. My airbox is intact. Once in 2-3 years (say 40-50K KM), give a very gentle clean to MAF sensor. I clean the air filter with pressurized air every month, and also blow air on radiator & condenser coils. Keep vehicle running good. 👍✨

Yes most advisable. Lemme repeat - ensure MAF is total dry (dry for few hours if in doubt) before plugging back. Later join battery and go for a spin to observe n calibrate. Hope all good. 👍

@@PranavBhayani actually i tried this for my MAF sensor for Mitsubishi Outlander....It stopped working...:(..it costed me 10k for a new one...But i do njoyed your video..keep it up

Oh really, very sorry to hear that. This process has to be done very gently, and many have been doing it worldwide. Infact the special can spray had much higher force. Once the cleaning is done, sensor needs to be fully dried and then install

@@PranavBhayani i poured isopropyl alcohol in a tea glass and put sensor in it and shook it ....i dried it under hair drier for 5 min and installed it...May be i was bit hasty and fast in drying it...DRYING properly might be my mistake

Would hydrogen peroxide work!? , ain't got no isopropyl alchohol, maybe some 40 percent alchohol mixture (whiskey), but no isopropyl, anything else that could possibly be used, emphasize on possibly, I'm out of options here. Ty for vid

Sorry, Hydrogen Peroxide won't work in this case. MAF sensor is very delicate, and the inside filament (a resistance wire) is super delicate, which can easily get damaged. Isopropyl Alcohol is just the "rubbing alcohol" we can get from pharmacy store, do recheck pls. Also whiskey kinda alcohol also won't work here. Even Acetone (/ nail polish remover liquid) is not suitable, because it can dissolve bit of plastic. We do not want any substance which can damage or leave any residue on the MAF filament, and hence IPA is most preferred, which even evaporates within sometime. Also, don't use any pressure air there. 😀👍

I think it will work. Just ensure that no pressure / force applied on internals of sensor. And surely allow to completely dry before refitting.

TB / Carb cleaner has some oily substance, and hence I would avoid it.

Yes can work. The main think to watchout - not put pressure on the sensor filament gauge, and allowing to complete dry before installation. Also not to use any harsh chemical for chemical. 👍

@@PranavBhayani Thank you!. I cleaned mine and worked well. Also cleaning the throttle body each time yo clean the sensor is key. When the batter fly valve gets clogged with carbon build. it does not open smoothly.

Nahi. No. I did this many times, all good. If you do it wrong way, or with wrong liquid then sensor can go bad. Take care.

Is electric contact cleaner spray also good tobe used as a cleaner onto mafs?

Mostly yes. Major of Elec Contact Cleaner sprays contains few Alkanes (eg Butane, Heptane, Propane etc) and Alcohol (eg, Isopropyl Alcohol) and/or some Refrigerant (eg Ethane). Just do a gentle spray on the sensor in disconnected & power-off state, no pressure, and ensure sensor is fully dried for few hours before installing. It should be fine. Btw, have a clean air filter solves majority of issue. 😊👍✨

Isopropyl Alcohol - you can easily get at any chemist (medical) store. Cost about INR 50-100 for a bottle of 100 ml

99% is better (means hardly any water content). Allow to fully dry critical object (sensor in this case) for few hours.

In my case can't observe any evident difference, maybe small change in number if test on a dyno. However a dirty MAF will surely decrease performance, especially noticed on high altitudes where air is thin. Not a bad idea to do a clean over few years; also check air filter condition. 👍

NO. for cleaning MAF sensor, do not use WD40, do not use Carburetor cleaner - those are oily in nature (leaves behind a coating!) and would negatively affect the delicate sensor. Either you a specially formulated MAF Cleaner (bit costly), or iso-propyl alcohol, but be very gentle in this activity. thanks for watching, you may explore my channel if any other video interests you. take care.

@@PranavBhayani thank you for suggesting me actually mere paas Tata Nano ha jisme kafi chije me khud karleta hu bcoze local mechanic ka kaam mujhe samjh nahi ata dusra kahe to Nano ke bare me sab zero ha ek kaam karvane jao 4 badha dete ha so mane obd scanner se check light scan ki code p0171 lean mixture search karme par pata chala ke most probably maf senser dirty hosakta ha so but it is very sensitive part so koi suitable cleanrer nahi mil raha but after watching your vedio I think this is right option thank you sir I hope in future bhi aap help karte rahna I have already subscribed your channel
