I have an old Colt '57 in .243 Win. that my mom gave me. On the muzzle end, I can see some orange/red coloring inside of the barrel. How do you tell the difference between copper fouling and rust? I don't think it is rust because the rifle still shoots great, but running lots of Hoppe's 9 BR through it isn't giving me that nice green color.

The noise is the rod in the guide it looks like a Tipton carbon fiber rod. And it's a Tipton bore guide. I have the rod and guide both. They haven't ruined any of my rifle in ten years of use. I clean pretty much the same way he does. Most guys don't shoot or clean enough to worry about most of the complaints. And about leaving copper in the barrel. I can't do it. My rifle have to be cleaned after a day at the range.

Maybe some more experienced folks can help me with this. I always heard one way only with a patch on a jag (he violated that), and push the brush all the way out (he did that). So, what the best way to protect the muzzle and rifling? Only push the jag partially out? Unscrew and remove the jag completely? Or is there goodness in pulling the jag with patch back through (don't let it come all the way out)? I assume this all holds for handguns too. And for revolvers you use a muzzle protection device at all times?
@donshowdon1292
@donshowdon1292 6 жыл бұрын
Patch on the end of a jag is tough to pull back from crown to breech as the patch easily comes off the jag. I don't like running a dirty patch back through a barrel and simply let it drop off, or take it off. Harder materials will potentially damage the crown of the barrel, which can seriously affect accuracy and consistency. Most nylon bore brushes I have seen are not hard enough to damage the barrel or the crown, so I am less concerned about damaging the crown from the brush. Probably brass brushes are OK unless you are trying to remove copper (brass is a mixture of metals including copper). You will note he was using a coated barrel cleaning rod which protects the barrel from being damaged by the rod itself. I am less concerned about damaging the barrel or crown with soft materials, but some jags, hoops or rod ends may be hard enough to damage the crown. I use tools that I think will not damage the barrel. Bore snakes are very good as you do not have to pull them back through the barrel. No, I don't use a muzzle protection device on revolvers at all times, as I use softer cleaning tools, most commonly a bore snake unless I am dealing with a problem inside the barrel (such as spot rust). I would not leave cleaner on the weapon/barrel as it might affect the finish.

People always worry about the metal jags, Its like they forget bullets do far more damage. I would be more worried about leaving cleaner in the barrel or anywhere in the gun. Many cleaners can do lots of damage if left in the firearm
@Bent099

Your jag is made of brass. Your barrel I would hope is made of steel. Brass is softer. Your not going to hurt your barrel or the crown. That is pretty much the entire principle of your jag being brass.

A dirty barrel will deposited the metals, (copper ext.) On the patch Wich eventually can wear your crowns edge! I push my rod down, barely exposing the patch at the muzzle and grab the patch with my fingers before the jag even touches the crown and hold on to the patch and pull the rod back. I also wipe the rod clean after every stroke. Different Strokes for different folks I guess

I am not worried too much about the copper, the carbon is where the problems lie. Hard carbon is not touched by Kg1 in my rifle. 200 rounds of 284 Win with 180's will require good bronze bristle brushes and perhaps JB or Flitz Bore cleaner. Short stroking with Montana Extreme Plastic brushes using JB or Flitz bore cleaner will get a Lot of the hard carbon out. Soaking for 24 hrs with Free All Penetrating oil applied with a wool mop helps break up the carbon as Free All has a chemcial that will dissolve carbon, but hard cooked on carbon takes time. One thing for sure, the term, "clean bore" means different things to different people. Clean patches do not mean the bore is clean! A Teslong bore scope is around $100, then you can become your own expert on what is best for you. One thing you can take to the bank, leave that carbon in long enough, and it will get so super cooked, it will never come out without 600 or 800 grit, silicone carbide available from Brownell's.

Isn't running the brush back and forth like that bad for the gun? You're dragging the fowling back and forth aren't you?
@donshowdon1292
@donshowdon1292 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you would be dragging the fowling material back and forth. It will also be loose to come off the brush if it meets much resistance. If the only fowling would be carbon or copper, I would not be too concerned with a decently hard barrel. I don't think there is much benefit to back-and-forth unless there is a fowling spot on the barrel. If it persists, you may want to take that to a gunsmith for more detailed analysis.

@@hunterblankenship9346 how and what you use can destroy a barrels accuracy faster than years of shooting. There's a video on here that shows that. It's pretty interesting to watch. My 1k meter rifles I take good care of them especially when cleaning. My other systems I don't get that crazy with them but i still take precautions on how i clean them. The rod constantly drops on the bottom part of the crown so it wears it unevenly where the bullet exits the barrel. Those cleaning rods that you put together by pieces fuck your rifling up. After i saw the camera go down that barrel i grabbed one of my older rifles and saw exactly what he was talking about. I won't ever clean my rifles how i used to
