Building a DIY cover for the Coleman Camp Oven using Nomex/Kevlar thread and a welders blanket. The cover helps to regulate the heat better and is more efficient using gas. Below are the links to the products used in this project. We saw this originally used by Carey on Vagabond: • Lake Mead Rec Area Cam...
But they didn't show how to actually make this cover - So here's our attempt. Turned out really great!

Welders Blanket:

I use a 10" square cast iron griddle plate instead of a pizza stone, holds and distributes heat well. I can use the griddle plate for other cooking too. Welders blanket project next, thanks for the video !

@@overlandeffex While in the heated oven, probably bacon while a breakfast casserole is cooking, would need to put it on the griddle based on time & temp. Also, I can remove the griddle from the oven and put in right on a burner to cook smash burgers or pancakes, stir fry. Now I can carry less cast iron cookware. Felt welders blanket just arrived, as my sewing skills are nil, not sure I will own up to the sewing job...lol.

Dave, I like that idea. I have the 11" rectangle toaster oven baking stone in my Coleman, which works well. However, when I have to replace it, I will get the cast iron griddle plate. Cost is currently just about the same - $24.95 for the 11" toaster oven baking stone; $27.95 for a 10.6" cast iron griddle plate. The one thing I wish I could get is a 2nd rack for my Coleman Oven.

Fantastic! Love the modifications you've made and it's still packable. I had been strongly considering the camp chef oven and stove combo as we have a more "permanent" camp site but I found I just didn't want to buy another appliance. Plus I just broke my propane distribution system and have to try and fix that. *grumbles* Something you might want to consider is either a pair of pliers to open the door or a pair of welding gloves. I've been useing welding gloves for a while now on the campsite to handle hot grills or my cast iron pan. They offer a little more dexterity and can be relatively inexpensive. Plus they don't melt like oven mitts. I bought my pair on sale at Princess Auto for 10$ CAD. Happy Camping!

Yeah every time we use the camp oven we use this blanket. It just seems to make the temperature more stable and it uses a little less gas. Thanks for the tip on the gloves. Our red knob still is staying pretty cool when we open the door. I'm sure as it gets older and the plastic starts to break down we'll be using the glove method. Have a great one!

i've been using a coleman oven for over 25 years and never had any burning or heat regulation problems, but i always use my oven on the right side burner of my coleman white gas stove which blocks a lot of the wind due to it's design. some of my friends have done the heat blanket modification but it seems to make the oven sheetmetal warp and bend a lot, to the point where the tabs on the top and bottom won't stay in their slots anymore.

Hi there & thanks for the video. Had just watched the video that you spoke of & was about to send a question on the cover & saw yours. Great job. Did you have to buy a special needle to hand on the welding fabric & what was it? Did you turn the cover inside out to hide the stitching or not?

Hi! Thanks for watching. No I didn't use any special needle for hand sewing. However the fabric was too thick and did break the needle in my sewing machine. As long and the eye of the needle was big enough for the thread it pushed through without any issues by hand sewing. I did not flip the cover inside out because I didn't mind seeing the stitching.

Goodmorning, splendid video about the construction of the insulation blanket for the Coleman. I’m curious how the felt (medium duty) blanket is holding up so far. The other makers of the blanket used the heavy duty version of the Tillman welding blanked and I was wondering what would be better to use for the insulation blanket. I had the idea that, with the felt version of the blanket small particles could come off (while the blanket has all loose fibre ends because of the felt) and that with the heavy duty version this would be less likely as it is more build from long fibers and so more resembles a fabric sheet of material. I’m just very interested in your experience. Thanks in advance for your reply, Jeroen

Yeah insulation is really the only efficient way to cook using the oven. We wanted to sew it so it was more secure in the wind as we camp sometimes in windy locations. We didn't want to use fiberglass as I was worried about the shedding of fiber. The blanket seems less likely to shed.

@@marvstokes8885 I haven't tested ours yet, but if you watch the Carey On Vagabond in the link above they do. No issues. I'll probably try it this week with some muffins.

@@overlandeffex I have seen theirs, works good. I think he used JB weld and you used some kind of kevlar thread. Where did you get the thread and needle? I am going to make one.

Well, you made the layout a lot more complicated than it had to be and made the cuts inefficiently. Working from the edge instead of cutting it in the middle would have left you a piece that would have made another cover with only 2 edges to sew.

The holes in the oven are there for a purpose an oven must breathe Or will contaminate the food allow your food to breathe in the oven your home oven has vents this oven is very efficient I've used it for years learn how to use it do not cover the holes

The cover does't seal the holes. It still allows the oven to breathe. It just helps insulate the oven better and I have found that I use way less gas when cooking.
