I've ALWAYS wanted my own Daft Punk helmet. I have an army of 3d printers, and it was time I got experience finishing a print. So, I printed, sanded, primed, and painted THIS COOL DAFT PUNK HELMET! Next up, adding electronics from Adafruit!
Here is the Adafruit tutorial, which also has the 3d model for the helmet:

Hey Joel, small tip, if you want your top coat of paint to be a metallic, especially chrome, then the basecoat underneath should be a glossy black and it causes the chrome top paint to pop a little more. Don't ask me why it works, but it just works. Punish Props Academy taught me that.
@3DPrintingNerd
@3DPrintingNerd 5 жыл бұрын
That's a great tip and I'll remember that for the future!
@RoseIllo
@RoseIllo 5 жыл бұрын
The reason why this works is due to how metallic vs non-metallic reflections work. Non-metallic reflections have a color underneath, with a colorless reflection on top that varies by angle. Metallic on the other hand, doesn't have a base color. It's only reflection. So to mimic that, you need the base color to be black, so the metallic paint is giving the reflection, and there's no other color mixing in.

For PLA, I use automotive glazing putty (Nitro-Stan, Bondo, store brand). I squeeze out a dab, then thin it with acetone until it's milk like. I then brush it on in the gaps. It dries quickly, and I do multiple layers until there's some excess, then sand until smooth.

Awesome video! I'm looking forward to this journey. I mean, in doing print finishing, it will be more challenging, but they'll look so much more professional. It will also improve your skills so they get done now quickly, and the prints will definitely be more durable. In short, they'll be: Harder. Better. Faster. Stronger. So keep doin' it right. I'm glad that you're going to bring these Around the World with you. Everyone who sees these will Get Lucky. I know I'd like to meet you Face to Face One More Time. Okay, I'm done now. 😁😁

A couple of product suggestions for the future: Instead of the Bondo spot filler I recommend Elmers Probond filler. You can use it indoors, it sands easier, and you can water it down and coat the whole piece which can take the place of the XTC3D which I think is most usefull to get up to B quality without all the other filling, sanding, priming, and painting but if you are going to put in the work for A quality I don’t think it’s a great choice. For chrome spray paint, I recommend Duplicolor Perfect Match Universal Chrome. IMO there is nothing better in a can, so if you want better chrome you need to go to a paint gun after that. Finally for a sealer I often use different gloss versions of spray sealer to get the effect I want but sometimes I use NuFinish which isn’t really a wax at all but acts like a wax. It does have some warnings about using it on plastic but I have never had any issue with it.

I'm about to do a putty "battle royale", and I'll need to add that Probond to the list of stuff to try.

No matter how good or poor one is at spray painting. You can fix any issues with a wet sand up to 2000g. Depending on how much of an oopsy you made and need to fix but you 'should' always wet sand with 2000g between color and clear as it will get rid of any and all imperfections. While filler primer is cool and all. It's actually for filling micro scratches and pin holes. Not what the 3d community uses it for so while it works. Resin will always be better. It adds that rigidity that your first model didn't have. Allows for easy sanding and the use of power tools which makes sanding even better. I would recommend an oscillating sander/multi tool vice a palm sander or orbital sander. Mostly for the variable speed and for the fact that it has a nice point and can get into much more complicated spaces.

Nice! I'm totally going to design and print something like this now... Maybe a cross of Daft Punk, Star Wars, Steampunk, and whatever the heck Adafruit Neopixels qualify as... I'll make a video and tutorial when I do, however it turns out. But seriously though, nice helmet and video. I'm really going to have to try this XTC3D resin now, because dang that finish looks good. #highfive for that!

another tip for a high gloss finish... had a friend back in Michigan who was a GM engineer who had a 1950-something corvette like in the Beach Boys song. He would show it off at car shows. He (and other people there with their own cool cars) would polish their cars with a polish called "Liquid Glass." They would apply up to 30 coats! THAT is a lot of work! But I gotta say: the shine on his car was amazing! NOTE: even With all these coats, he didn't want anybody touching the finish of his car leaving any oils from their finger!

Finally a finished model, turned out great, one thing I found out about XTC on my mask, it's best not to use it on models with small details, it tends to fill in the deep areas and it's too thick in my opinion. Tried thinning it with acetone but it was still too thick, best to just prime with filler, sand wet and dry and maybe use some spot putty.

I'm finally ready for primer, and I just finished printing a second helmet before I even finished the first! Joel - if you want to get a super-shiny chrome-like finish, you should wash those both with dish soap to remove the carnauba wax, then wetsand the silver surfaces working from like a 200 down to a 1000 grit wetsand paper, *then* use an automotive grade gloss clearcoat for 3-ish coats, then allow it a day or two to cure, after which wet sand from 500 to 2000 grit untill it is an even hazy finish and finally polish it using automotive cutting polishes, starting with a medium cut and then a light cut.
@3DPrintingNerd
@3DPrintingNerd 5 жыл бұрын
That doesn't sound time consuming at all :)
@overkillisunderrated5027
@overkillisunderrated5027 5 жыл бұрын
it sounds that way when typed out, yes... but it is a lot of do a thing for 20-30 minutes then let it dry / cure, etc... come back in a few hours and do the next thing, etc. Painting something with a high gloss finish will always follow the same basic process whether it is a shiny helmet, a car's body panel, motorcycle parts, etc.

Honestly.. Don't waste your time with Chrome DIY paint. Once you put your fingers on it the helmet is ruined. I sent my Guy Man helmet to Don at Coat of Chrome and he did an awesome job chroming it. And it has clear coat on it.

@DaniAurora23 5 жыл бұрын
How much did coat of chrome quote you on the helmet? I have wanted to make a helmet for a while but I haven't found a way to get that chrome finish at home. edit: Also, what kind of finishing work did you do before sending it in for the coating?
@joeb4847
@joeb4847 5 жыл бұрын
Daniel Jansen I Believe it was 325.00 for the chrome. But he primes it and does all the sanding work on it then he chromes it. I did some light sanding.. Nothing major. Maybe if there are some little holes in the cast you can fill those with bondo and sand it smooth. This part is very important.. If you are going to chrome the helmet DO NOT put any rattle can paint on the helmet.. Actually stay away from anything in a rattle can - paint or primer. If you want to prime the helmet before you get it chromed it has to be a 2K type automotive primer. If you put rattle can paint/primer on the helmet it will bubble up and damage the chrome from underneath. So stay FAR away from that stuff. If you want to go with just a silver color paint then you can put whatever you want on em. If you want to see how my helmets turned out you can check out my instagram @ Mykel Waters. I have photos up there all along the process of starting the helmets to finish.. Leds and all.. if you want LEDs check out Alex Plus leds. He sells kits specifically for Daft Punk helmets.. His stuff is top notch.
