Bought this last year and pulled 40 bags of dead grass out, which was a lot. This year our lawn looks 180 degrees different. It's full, no weeds, and looks amazing. Highly recommend this tool.

I love when homeowners take pride in their homes and lawns. I have to pay for someone else to take care of my lawn now due to a stroke. I love teaching the young kids in my neiborhood how to care for their lawn. A few of them ask if they can borrow lawn tools so they can make their lawns look as good as mine. One young man wanted to do it as a gift to his hard working mother. God bless kids like this one and his mother. She taght him well. Thanks for taking the time to show people how to care for a lawn and the product you use.

Helpful hint: when using electrical lawn tools, always start from the house where the plug is so that you are always walking away from it. That eliminates most of the cord shifting.

Important tip: if you have sprinklers, don't use the heavier attachment (scarifier). The thinner ones are spring loaded to avoid anything that isn't grass. The scarifier will destroy the tops of sprinklers. If you know exactly where they are or mark them then you'd be fine.

I use my clippings in the vegetable garden. I spread them out about 4" thick then rototill them deep into the soil. They break down quickly in the soil. Pretty sandy soil in my neighborhood but not where I've had my garden. I move the location every so many years and the grass grows so much nicer where I've had the garden in the past. It holds the moisture better after I've built it up. The grass clippings from cutting the lawn get spread out in the garden to keep weeds from growing throughout the season.

I just bought one of the Sun Joe products and the owners manual did not have a whole lot of what I needed to do to use this product for best results. I appreciate your video and mostly followed what you did on my lawn with great results. In 1 month I am able to see new growth filling in bare spots as well as having a lawn that is very comfortable and soft when walking on it bare footed. Thank you so much for the video and how much this helped me.

Great video! I have the Greenworks dethatcher and used it on a small area of my lawn last year. Put new seed down and fresh bagged dirt with a manure mixture and my lawn looked really good after a 12-20 day period. Also watered the lawn after applying the dirt and seed every day for 5-10 minutes. Plan to do my whole lawn this spring. Thanks for posting.

Pro tip from someone who almost exclusively uses corded machines: Throw the extension cord over your shoulder when operating the machine. That helps keep it out of the way.

Thanks for the video. I got one last year and love it and showed this to my dad so he could see how much it pulls out. I learned three tricks to share with everyone. 1) propping the back chute/panel open just a bit helps to let the machine clear the debris out better. 2) Always work away from your power and it's easier to avoid the cord. 3) You need more overlap on this than a lawn mower. I found 4-5 inches was good.

Great video and well presented. I have a greenworks dethatcher that i bought 4 years ago. Its amazing what one good day of using it has done for my yard. I do mine twice a year and have had zero issues but a beautiful yard to show off.

I bought the same dethatcher last year and it worked great so far in my lawn. I had a lot of Poa Annua last year and it helped remove most of that while dethatching the lawn. I got several wheelbarrows full of thatch last year and was amazed at how easy it worked. I've already used it twice this year, and my lawn is starting to look great. Prior to last year, I had never done anything like this, and had no idea how it helps your lawn. I'm going to use your idea of going in different directions as I only went in ONE. Also, I have not used the scarifier, so I plan to borrow your idea on that too. Your videos are tons better than mine, so good job with that. Thanks.

I have the same machine and LOVE it! I only dethatch, not scarify, but it quickly paid for itself. It’s extremely satisfying to have so much material come out, and even better a couple of weeks later when your lawn starts recovering. My neighbors still had yellow dormant lawns, while mine was looking green and lush. Four wild rabbits even hopped over from several houses away to check it out! 😂

I used a very similar machine on my lawn against the advice of a "Lawn Care Guru" on KZfaq. My machine is an earlier version (2 yrs old) and did not come with a scarifying blade. Also, more importantly, I used my machine on "St Augustine" grass which grows via stallons and can become quite thick and spongy. With that in mind, I can not go at my lawn as hard or thorough as you're able to. I probably could go deeper/harder with a modified scarifying blade. 2 years ago my St. Augustine lawn was very thick with thatch and caused browning and disease areas. As I mentioned, I contacted a "professional" via his KZfaq channel asking if he has ever dethatched a St. Augustine lawn. His channel had a lot of St. Augustine care content so I figured he would know. His response to my question was, "Absolutely NOT ever" in a very condescending way. His opinion contradicted the Univerisity of Texas study and recommendations. This left me with a few choices; 1.) Leave the lawn alone. 2.) Hire a professional 3.) Have the lawn replaced 4.) Rent a machine and give it a try. Choice 1 was an option but it was driving me nuts because it looked bad. Choice 2 wasn't really a strong thought. I didn't know a good gardener experienced enough to trust and it would be more than I was willing to pay. Choice 3 was viable but expensive to rip out and replace a lawn. Choice 4 was my choice.....sort of. I was going to rent a machine but I discovered I couldn't adjust the blade width for St. Augustine lawns (the blades need to be set wider). As part of my lengthy searching, I found a machine similar to your machine. Slightly over $100, adjustable, and it would be mine. Also, in a worst-case scenario, it would only cost me a little over $100 to find out if it worked and how well. If it couldn't handle my lawn I could just return it or sell it to recover cash. So here's what happened. The machine arrived in a couple days. I removed every other rake-tine. This has to be done for St. Augustine as to not be too aggressive. I mowed my lawn as short as I could go without ruining the lawn. Then I ran the thatcher over it fairly slow and carefully. I was shocked at how much dead material came out. Like your lawn, bags, and bags. Afterward, I did another mow over it and used the leaf-blower to really get the dead material out. Lastly, the real magic happened when I fertilized with "Milorganite". I let the lawn rest 2 weeks with no mowing. It turned into a brand new lawn and was the best in the neighborhood by a wide margin. It stayed solid green for 2 years and very healthy. I just did the same process about a week ago. I already know the results will be awesome.

I brought the SunJoe last year and used it in the fall before overseeding and my lawn looks pretty good right now. Got some spots to do next fall. The lawn had never been aerated, so I too had a sh*t load of thatch come up. I'm glad I brought it.

I watched this video then purchased the unit from Home Depot. It did exactly what your video showed and it made a huge difference. I had to kill off the moss in the lawn first as always but this time I didn’t need to spend hours taking. The machine is worth every penny.

I love my sunjoe! Definitely helped transform my awful (previously a rental before we bought it) lawn.

I got to say, Sun Joe seems to make a decent product. I have one of their electric tillers. I've been impressed with its performance the last couple of years. Wet, dry, hard pack don't matter. Put in pavers for a patio area and used it to loosen the dirt, thigh thick roots everywhere buried deep, worked right through and just bounced off any roots it couldn't cut. Considering what my front lawn looks like, guess I know what my next Sun Joe toy is gonna be.

Just used my Sunjoe for the first time, I loved it. Pulled up so much and made raking it up so much easier. I couldn't believe how much it pulled up. I have owned one for 3 years ... and its one SWEET machine ! It does a much better job then the $50 dollar for 4 hour rentals and it quickly pays for its self ... no gas or tune ups needed ! I have loaned it out quite a few times and everyone LOVES it and comment how there lawn has never looked better !

The first time I used mine two years ago, it pulled out nine lawn bags of cruft from my 5,000 sq ft lawn. It does wonders for letting water and nutrients get down into the soil. It’s an excellent bang for the buck purchase. SunJoe just put out a new version that’s 15” wide for folks with larger yards. I’d be happier if Ryobi started selling their cordless version again here in the US.

First thing I did was look for a follow up vid, there was none so will have to subscribe... Really liked how you did this!

I have one for a few years and works great. With a permanent marker I made marks on the body of unit to better tell where the blade ends are positioned for more accurate positioning.The unit pulls itself along. Lawn can look kind of raw afterwords but after some seed and growth its well worth the temporary raw look. Another thing the scarifier does is it helps to break up hard uneven spots on lawn smoothing and flattening the lawn. I bought the Sun Joe because the motor, based on amperage, seemed more powerful (durable) than other units I compared it to. I wouldn't be to concerned about doing it again in the fall if the lawn looks thick n healthy and in the spring perhaps only dethatch,scarifiying is very aggressive and is more for rehabing and not maintaining.

I just got one today and I must say this thing is a beast of a toy looking machine. All I could say it does work. And works well!

As someone who’s yard still doesn’t look good no matter what I do I need this! This might be the game changer! I wanna see the updates on how his yard looks over the next few weeks!

When you scarify a second time you should go diagonal with your first direction, you'll overlap with the old lines less and essentially get more coverage with the grass. I worked at a golf course and a sports complex and when we do heavy dethatching we just use the scarifier over and over going in different directions at a time, the most we've ever done at once is 8 times, You can keep going and going over you look back and see that your grass is very thin and almost dirt and that's when it's time to stop.

Cool tool. I thatched my lawn in June with a rented machine and filled the back of my F150. Could not believe how much I got out. Look a ton better!
