Adding glycerin will keep your mix wetter on the ink pad and give you longer open time on cardstock. (This ingredient is why inkpads aren't air tight but also don't dry out under normal conditions.) It may also prevent the ink colors from completely separating on the watercolor paper.

While this may be true, glycerin prevents the water from reacting with the ink properly (for distress purposes). Shame really. 🤔

@@_MyInkieFingers 🤔 the only other possibility I can think of is some diluted propylene glycol... but adding a drop of water to the inkpad is an easier solution.

What’s the difference between spray stains and spray oxides? Can you make spray stains?

A wee suggestion for a substitute for ball bearing that won't rust. Use a glass bead, it'll have a bit of weight to be able to shake up inky mixtures but shouldn't affect the mix

I’m not sure if anyone has recommended this yet since it’s older video but I was actually going to suggest marbles. Glass marbles…you can get a bag from the Dollar (.25) Tree 😆 I actually bought a bag to use them in spray bottles… I’m going to be DIY’ING my own shimmer sprays with Mica Podwer Eyeshadow (also from the DT. But yea glass beads would probably work as well 😊

Getting some great tips and ideas. By the way if you use distilled water or boil and cool your water it kills any bacterial. You can then use for your brush cleaner and when making your mixes. Also with your mini ink pad Tim has said even they can't perfect the formula in a mini pad.

Stainless steel ball-bearings can be found in multiple sizes at your local hardware store. I buy them for nail polish, etc.

Very interesting experiment. I don't have any Stampin' Up colours but this would be a good way of making my own supply of DO sprays to co-ordinate with my existing DIs and DOs. I have 2 of the TH palettes - one has alcohol inks in it, reactivated by alcohol of course, and you can then paint with it rather than the usual daubing technique with alcohol inks. The other one is for my Perfect Pearls. I put a small amount of the powder in each depression and carefully add drops of water and mix them. They will set hard and you can use them like regular watercolour pans. It's a great way of adding a bit of co-ordinating shimmerin a very controlled way. I made my own labels for both palettes with my desktop publisher and printed them on acetate.

Have you considered adding a little glycerin to the mixture you use to make the ink pads? Glycerine is used to condition dry ink pads and because it’s sticky, it’s also used to help different compounds (like dye, water, and gouache) stay mixed; it may help. Thank you for sharing!

Yes I have. But glycerine prevents one from being able to distress the ink. Like with water splattering. It just doesn't react as well 🤔😥

ranger makes a "distress refresher" spray. you could try that to remoisten your ink pads

I tried that yesterday. But I already had used glycerin on the pad (which failed) It seemed to work but I had to start from scratch with a new pad to let dry out. I'll test it when it's dry. Fingers crossed! 😉❤️

Very interesting. . You've managed to make little pads when Tim Holtz said they would NEVER come out with the minis on the Oxides. . Probably because they can't keep them from drying out quickly and they would get nothing but complaints. . LOVE your videos!

If you have a store near you that sells the ingredients for cosmetics, soaps, creams, bath teas, nail polish, etc., which need stuff like the oils, waxes, pigments and other bases and containers for the cosmetics…they will carry the steel balls that you need. If they have the bits to make nail polish (base, pigment, bottles…they will have the metal balls). In BC Canada on the border of Surrey and Langley we have a company called Voyager soap and candle. They might be able to do mail order to some areas.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I also make my own sprays, and I have found that I have to use something to help stir the sediment that accumulates at the bottom of the bottles. Stainless steel balls/bearings can be pricey. I have found that the hematite beads in the jewelry section of Hobby Lobby work great. I buy various sizes when they are 50% off so I always have some on hand.

Instead of water you might want to try glycerin. Especially when dealing with the ink pad. Do a mixture of water and glycerin to keep it wetter longer. Although I'm not sure about the water reactivity once the glycerin is in there but you never know.

I've tried it and unfortunately itbwasnt a success. The water doesn't react as well as you suspected. Problem is, this is not what in an actual oxide pad so I can't really expect the same results. I was however hoping it would behave similar. One cam hope right? 😂😁❤️

It hadn't occurred to me to make my own oxides, but being an SU Demo (Australia) I like the idea of having oxides in SU colours. You really are brilliant you know?!

@@Kammitoes I know right? It kinda sucks. I'm going to try to add the glycerin in other ways rather than direct. I did try mixing it in before putting it on the pad, but I'm still not happy with the results. The water droplets/splatter also doesn't have such an intense effect with the glycerin in the mixture... My motors are still running though! haha

Just be careful they don't rust. Perhaps try in a small amount first. Also, just so you know, if they do rust, the rust stains the inside of your spritzer. 😉

New to all these DYIs and loving them. I'm a bit lost and wondering if this recipe/technique only works with the water based re-inkers which then creates the oxide effect? Would it work with actual oxide re-inkers? I need a weekend with no distractions to watch all your videos! There's so much to learn!

If you had actual oxide reinkers you would negate the need to make DIY Oxide Spray 🤣💗💗 (But you could pour the reinker in a spray bottle 😉)

I played with white gouache, reinker, water, and a spray bottle. I will be ordering mini misters, and a bigger tube of white gouache. Its an awesome spray!

@@_MyInkieFingers I can't help but wonder about metallic gouache. I am imagining using blue reinkers and silver gouache. Nope nope nope, not falling down that rabbit hole yet. I have oodles of scraps that I want to use up or toss by the end of the year. I have had some of these for at least 5 years.

@@jesseb5112 lol you're too cute. You can always add some perfect pearls to any of the mixtures. Then u get the shimmer and it's much cheaper then the metallic watercolors. Or better yet, after you spray your piece, then hit with the shimmer spray afterwards too! As that will help mix and blend the DIY Oxide too 😉❤️

I worked in wholesale packaging, it's not called a chamber it's called a dip tube, they come in different lengths. Misters are fine spraying sprayers. The 24/10 sprayers can be bought in bulk from a place called WSP, wholesale supplies plus. The stickers are called loose leaf reinforcement tabs. I was a purchasing agent for an art/office supply store and ran the art department (fine art only no scrapbooking supplies). Hth

I agree. Gouache is made from acrylic & watercolor paint, but it's a very precise process to make it gouache. I didn't even want to try to figure out the process. Gouache is easy and can be used for so many other things. (including my splatters) 😉😎❤️

@@_MyInkieFingers only acrylic gouache has polymer (acrylic) in it. Watercolor gouache is made with the same binders as watercolor but it has larger pigment particles packed tightly together so light can not get through. Did you use gouache or acryl gouache? I wonder if it matters for your formula? I also thought the suggestion to add glycerin was smart. Your formula is a great idea! I loved your video, but I don't have any of the ingredients (except water😏) Sad day for me.

Glycerine doesn't play well with the water resist. The water spots end up looking like warts! 🤣🤣

If you had pre-sprayed your water color sheets w water or used a paint brush to moisten the paper thoroughly the swatches wouldn’t separate.

The problem with glycerine is water doesn't react the same way when you try to splatter the blended ink on the paper. It wouldn't leave water spots so I wasn't very happy with the result. 😢

Have you ever found a supply of stainless steel balls that fit these tubes and work/don't rust? Just bought through your link the gouache paint. I am going to try it out and hopefully save a bundle making the rest of the oxide sprays I need ( I have all the re inkers). Thanks.

This is cool! I think I will start with some fall colors! What about that refreshing spray that you have ? I have a feeling that the refreshing spray has glycerin in it, so I plan on DIYing my own. It might be a good ingredient to add to help with blending the concoction as well to keep it moist, oxides do not dry fast....NO emojis since I"m on my desk top :-( Thank you for these great tips and party!!!!

I'll try it. But I try to stay away from glycerine as it won't allow the blend to be as smooth nor does it react with water nicely. The water spots end up looking like warts! 🤣🤣🤣

Mix it with heat protectant spray. Shake before you spray it. Mine settles too. That's natural 😉❤️

Interesting that your mini cubes dried up quickly. I remember Tim Holtz saying Oxides would never be released in the mini cube because the ink doesn't work in that size. Maybe they dried out too quick?

I don't think that's the case. Primarily because these are not actually true oxide inks. I think I need something to keep it moist. I'm trying a few things to see what I can come up with 😉❤️ fingers X'ed

You should add some glysterin to the water you add & it shouldn’t evaporate so quickly. At least from my understanding of things. Loving these diy recipes 👍🏼😁⭐️

Good idea, but the only problem is glycerine prevents it from reacting nicely when splattering with water for the water drops look. I'm trying distress refresher... Oh how I wish I was a true chemist and could decipher what's ACTUALLY in all these products! Haha 🤣🤣
