This is so helpful. I'm planning to cut up an old memory foam crib mattress and use it for a dog bed.

Be very careful - I've seen some memory foam mattresses covered with a fiberglass cover that would be disastrously itchy if cut.

Im in the process of sewing a cat bed and im also inserting a piece of reflective picknick blanket to reflect their body heat. Obviously im not putting a cat bed on the floor (cats really dislike ground level), its just a bit of extra comfort for them. But in case of the dog bed, the stuffing alone might not be enough to shield them from the cold floor.

Would you use quilting cotton for a bed that’s only used lightly. My dog has a bed in our living room but we use it for a “place” and she loves to be on it, but only if she’s snacking on a treat. Other than that she doesn’t use it.

Personally I wouldn't, but you know your dog and your tolerance for wear and tear.

Does anyone know how I’d be able to add sides to this so it’d be kind of like a box? I also would like to know how to get the sides to stay up.

This tutorial shows how to make it a box. You need something under the fabric to support the sides standing up. In this case the foam supports the sides.

@@Mellysews maybe I should rephrase. I want to sew something like a pen. I guess I meant a hollow box without a top. I don’t know how to explain. I want to sew something with a foam base so it’s somewhat sturdy and soft and with walls about 6 inches high so I can place my guinea pigs in it. I’m not sure if this is making any sense but I have been trying to figure out how to do this for a while now whenever I have some free time. I’m pretty much a beginner at sewing but there are so many things I am trying to figure out how to sew as I haven’t found any tutorials on what I am looking for and this is one of those things I can see in my head but can’t figure out how to make a reality. I’d honestly appreciate any help on how to do this or any recommendations on resources to look at to try and figure out how to sew these types of things.
