It's a great little trick for novice DIYers who may not have the supplies or tools to use the more traditional method. Even as a seasoned DIYer, it has its place!

As long as the cracks aren't getting worse and they're not much more than hairline, you should be fine with just some spackle and sanding. If they're wider than hairline, you'll really need to tape and mud otherwise the cracks will just end up opening again. I plan to do a video on taping and mudding but I don't have one yet. You can find plenty of tutorials on KZfaq, though.
