One of my favourite Christmas decorations is the cinnamon pine coones you can buy in shops. They smell heavenly! Your pomander is soo pretty . Laura Ingalls Wilder mentioned in one of her books how a friend of the family gave her mother a pomander for Christmas and how it was stuck all over with cloves, would last for months and fill the room with a wonderful scent. She wrote how pleased her mother was with such a gift and how she placed it on the mantle of the fireplace .

I have the Williamsburg book, Kandye. I found it at a garage sale for a buck. I just love it. When I lived in VA, I used to visit Williamsburg with friends to photograh the wreathes. Right now is a great time to visit. Lots of fun events. And the decor is awesome! The shops and restaurants make wreathes that reflect what they sell or are known for. November is a good time to go, too, as there are places set up that sells items you can use in your wreathes, especially mini pineapples. My hubby and I visited last year. I think the COVID years hurt things a bit as the wreathes were not as decorated as they had been when I lived in VA between 2005-2011. Also, I learned from a few of the licals that the downplaying of our early American history in recent years has hurt the tourism that is relied upon by the historical district. So, I highly recommend people to visit. Its a wonderful place to see at any time of year & the rebuilds were done using original house plans, so its very close to how it looked originally. Anyway, thanks for sharing this craft. God bless! Sue 😊❤

You're welcome! Unfortunately part of the tourism decrease has come from the 1619 project. Every tour you take in CW is about slavery and how horrible white people were and are. It's so sad. They don't tell you about the homeowners anymore, just their slaves. The slave story should be told for sure, but it shouldn't be the overwhelming focus. Things need to come back into balance.

I love these and make them pretty much every year. I often wondered how available citrus fruits were back in those days. It seems they would have been a rarity to places in the north. I love the way pomanders smell at Christmastime. What a lovely smell. 💕

I remember when doing that as a kid, back then I didn’t have the awl and got lots of blisters from inserting each and everyone of them. It was worth it. I put a small wooden stick into it and a pink ribbon. It last very long, more then a year if not more.

My girls and I spent a evening making the orange pomanders during the Christmas holidays. They really enjoyed themselves. I had a bulk sized bag of cloves that was twenty years old😳they were still good! Back in the 80’s I was a young housewife with very limited funds. I made most of my Christmas decorations with dried orange slices , apples, gingerbread men. Made everything smell so good.

I love the crafts you do. I made the wreath, it turned out OK ish. With the oranges I would try using essential oil of cloves and put a few drops on. It makes it smell great. I love the tool you use. I'm going to get one of those for December. Rather then trying to use a skinny crochet hook. Cheer from the pacific northwest. Canada side.

Absolutely! There is an old Christmas special you can watch on KZfaq. It's from the 1970's and it's the Perry Como Christmas Special from Colonial Williamsburg. John Wayne is in it and it is well worth watching because they go all over the town and end the show in the church.

I was in the SCA. It is a medieval Restoration group. As a party game we would clove lemons and oranges, we gave them to someone. If they took the clove out with their teeth they would give you a kiss in the lips, if they took it out with their fingers they would give you a kiss on the hand
