DIY your own cheap and easy reversible window covers for your car camper or van.
In this video I give you the step by step instructions I used to make my car camping window covers. These are very easy to make and take a minimal amount of time and tools. If you do it right, they will block all light coming out of your windows for a more stealthy car camping experience. Great for #vanlife and #carlife !
👉Products I used in this video-
Velcro strips - amzn.to/3QTI3SA
Reflectix Roll - amzn.to/3R4QY3E
Elmers Spray Adhesive - amzn.to/39Wyq4K
Black foam board- available at most dollar, craft and office supply stores
👉Chapters - to help you jump to where you want to watch.
0:00 - How they work
1:19 - Stuff you'll need to make these window covers.
2:13 - How to make your window patterns.
5:21 - Starting to make the window covers.

LITTLE CABIN IN THE YUKON
When I'm not traveling in an RV or at home working on an RV, I'm usually at our remote, off grid log cabin in the Yukon. My husband and I have had this cabin for over 20 years and love it. If you'd like a look into that part of my life, I have a channel showing how we live there, lots of beautiful scenery and wildlife. So much of what I learned living off grid at the cabin has come in handy living in an off grid RV! The link is here-

Equipment I use to create my videos-
Sony ZV-1 - amzn.to/398APIZ
Canon HF R800 - amzn.to/3IkvSsJ
Extra batteries and charger for Canon HF R800 - amzn.to/3rqtFFm
Rode Wireless Go Microphone - amzn.to/3FMpd8W

Hey I have the 07 version of that same white car - love it and have already had a few adventures. I made the foam board window shades - just brilliant, thank u! I didnt put on the tab handle - I just crank down the window and pop them out from the outside. And didnt do the reflectix since when I camp in hot weather I like to drape my entire car with Aluminet shade cloth 90% which keeps car amazingly cool even in blazing sun. The netting hanging over open windows kinda serves as insect deterrent too, although in areas with heavy skeeters Im sure some would get in. I think I will add reflectix layers to the window shades though for cool weather camping (having it face inward) plus have a reflectix layer under my mattress to keep the chill from seeping in from below - happy sleeping and safe travels everyone!
@HoneyandMe
@HoneyandMe 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! I love your idea using the shade cloth! I'm going to have to look into that. I've just completed a 3 week road trip in my car camper and some nights up here in northern BC were pretty chilly. But, I realized I was staying quite comfortable in the car at night with just 1 light comforter. I think it was the window covers. I put them up every night, reflectix side facing in, and slept cozily all night. Take care and happy camping!

Great video! I think the only thing I might try differently is just covering the black side with black duct tape instead of bothering with the black foam board or black fabric. I’m definitely going to make some of these for my Jeep!
@HoneyandMe
@HoneyandMe 2 ай бұрын
Hi Kelly! The black duct tape would work too. The difference would be that duct tape is shinier. I’ve noticed in other car/van campers that you can easily see the duct tape reflecting the light even through tinted windows, which does take away a lot of the stealthiness if you are trying to overnight someplace where you want to be inconspicuous. The foam board is non-reflective and just looks black through tinted or untinted windows. One thing I hadn’t taken into consideration when I used the foam board was it’s insulating qualities. Between the foam board and the reflectix my car stayed cooler in the sun and warmer at night! Bonus!! Anywho… just wanted to make you aware of the difference between the duct tape and foam board! Hope your covers work out great and you have many happy adventures in your jeep!

I have a Pontiac vibe (so a Toyota Matrix) I found your video for help with figuring out a sleeping method. But your video on how to make the window coverings is so detailed. I didn't think about using both black foam board and black duct tape. What thickness is the foam board? It looks like a trip to JoAnn or Micheals is in order.
@HoneyandMe
@HoneyandMe 13 күн бұрын
Vibes are great too…I had a 2009 and only sold it when my son in law begged to buy it😁 I’m so glad you found me! The foam board is about 1/4 inch thick, and I’m pretty sure it’s a standard thickness. I got mine at a dollar store. I have to say how well the covers work! I’ve made sets for the Matrix and my Rav4. Traveling last fall I found the covers really helped to keep the warmth in the car overnight and I didn’t need to use my 12-volt blanket at all! Good luck with creating your covers and have fun car camping!👍
@DanielWoike
@DanielWoike 13 күн бұрын
@@HoneyandMe thank you for the response. Yeah, I love my Pontiac Vibe. I got about 170,000 miles over the 10 years of ownership on it and I hope to hit 300,000. I went to Micheal's today and I found the foam board. I got the 20x30 and the 24x36 ones. I measured the front windows and it seems like they are 31 inches across at the longest point, so I don't know if the 30" ones will work. Also your video, helped me decide that I didn't want to make a window cover for the rear window and just get one of the covers made by Heat shield. They have covers for every window, but at $50 for the three sets I would need, the cost was a bit much.
@HoneyandMe
@HoneyandMe 12 күн бұрын
@DanielWoike What year is your Vibe? I have yet to make a cover for the front windows. I usually just use the folding windshield covers you can buy. I figure if I’m being stealthy, there are so many people who put them up in their cars to keep heat out that it wouldn’t stand out. I did make them for the side windows though so it appears to just be a dark tint. Let me know how your front one goes! Good idea on ordering the back window cover. It is the hardest one to make with all the weird bumps. My Matrix has a separate opening window in back, which is great for camping, but makes even more stuff to cut around. The Rav4’s was much easier to make. Good luck with your covers! Lmk how it goes!-Sue👍😁

@DanielWoike Lol! I guess we’ll never know how difficult making one for the windshield is😆This summer my goal is to figure out a good curtain for privacy between the back and front of the car. I made one that worked pretty good last summer, but I think I can do better. Hoping to do a video later on. Let me know if you think the money spent is worth it for your back window though. I’m curious!😁

Wow, that works great! Thanks for the tips! What did you put in to keep the light out of the front windows and windsh? Same thing?

Hi! Thanks for watching😁In the front windshield I use one of the store bought windshield sun reflectors. I got mine at a 2nd hand store that is for a Kia. It is bigger than my windshield so covers it completely with excess on each side. Then, so far, I’ve been using 2 of the kind that fold up into a small circle. Hard to explain them. They have wire around the edges and pop open on their own. They cover the driver’s and passenger’s windows in the front seat. They are black on one side, which works with staying stealthy. I plan to make the same covers for the side windows in the front when I get a chance as the ones in the back work so well. Until then, these pop out ones work is I place the right and use clips to keep them in place. Take care!❤️

@@HoneyandMe awesome! Thanks for the quick reply! I will be making some of these for my Florida trip next month. I sleep at rest stops on the way, but hate the bright street lights, so this will solve that problem! I got over 300,000 miles on my matrix, and it still runs like new!

Hi I love your videos and am currently staying in my car now. Not by choice but here I am. Anyway lol I have tried this method and found alot of the heat makes the duct tape hot and smell and also didn't feel safe using the spray adhesve because of chemiicals as well. Is there a safer method to these. Thanks so much in advance, Donna

Hi Donna! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Regardless of why you are staying in your car, you seem to have a good attitude. Good on you! Making the best and being thankful goes a long way in finding joy. Now, as to the 'smell' issue! I'm wondering if it could be the duct tape brand. Mine have never emitted an odour in the heat, so am at a loss as to why yours would. As to using a different method to glue to 2 sides together, you could use a glue gun. Or any glue that you felt okay about. Just give it the time to dry and cure. If you are still hesitant to use a glue, you could try just putting the 2 pieces in the windows, one on top of the other, and just use the friction and pressure of the window frames to hold them in. It would be more fiddly, and the pieces may not last as long without the duct tape to protect the edges, but it could work if you wanted to avoid the use of glue and duct tape. I found in colder weather, these window covers, with the shiny side facing in, kept my car much warmer at night, and in the daytime with the shiny side facing out to reflect the sun, kept the car way cooler on hot days. It's the 2 layers that work together to insulate the windows better. But you could also just use one layer at a time. It really depends on what you are comfortable with. I hope this has been helpful and given you some ideas of how to make it work for you. I'd love to hear what you end up with and how it works for you. Stay in touch! All the best-Sue

I bought some foam board thinking I’d use that instead of the reflectix but turns out it has bad smell. I left it out to vent but 3 days later it still smells 😢 Do all of them do that or I got a bad one?
@HoneyandMe

That’s weird! Mine didn’t smell at all. Does it smell all around? Or is it from the foam between the papers? If it’s the foam, maybe sealing the edges with the tape will trap it? That is very strange, but I’m assuming there are different producers of the same kind of stuff. Sorry I can’t be more help, and I hope you can figure out a solution. Best of luck👍-Sue

It would be being plastic, but I am finding the foam board has held up extremely well. Thanks for your input👍
