We’re getting lots of inspiration and help from all of you doing this collaboration; since we are planning to build our own home this year. I absolutely adore the shelves on the side of your Microwave. It is those details that make your kitchen look more vintage and it’s extremely functional. 🩷

Great advice. Love your approach and style too. Subbed. Love your inspo pics!! And what's so crazy is your inspo pic does have a hood in it Haha but your kitchen turned out gorgeous and when and if you decide to update it I'm sure I'll enjoy that too

Your kitchen is beautiful, Sarah. Its seems very warm and inviting. I know how you feel about a few things you would change. I am in the midst creating a Pinterest board to update our kitchen. I am inspired by your advice and caution. I am considering an epoxy counter top treatment too. It will take a warm granite countertop (a little like yours) to a carrara style. So nervous to attempt this...would love to see you do it first! lol.

We had a kitchen remodel a couple of years ago after living in the house for nearly 30 years. And you're right about your dream kitchen changing. I thought I wanted all the big Tuscan French provincial thingy, but what I really wanted was something simple and organized and clean. I think we achieved it because I went with more of a transitional / Farmhouse look. I love my kitchen but there are some things that I wish I had done differently. And you're right about the tile. I went back and forth about backsplash and I think I just thought about it way too much where a simple white subway tile would have sufficed, I have something sort of creamy crackly, not really what I wanted. However, I am very very grateful to have a new kitchen. My husband and I worked on it together. He installed it for me and it's just a nice addition to our home. Now on to the rest of the house! I think I have remodeling fatigue. After I made all those decisions, I was exhausted. 🤪🤪🤪 Thanks for all the wonderful videos.

LOL... Oh Sarah...I love your honesty and insight! I am living in my MOTHER’S DREAM Kitchen. I have been back in my family home for almost 17 years. SLOWLY...slowly renovating the kitchen that my Dad built when I was 15 years old...I’m turning 64 soon! So I had to laughed when your 5th regret was the countertops! Mine is “orange “ and the tile around the built in wall oven and cooktop is ............OLIVE! LOL!!! Yes it is totally the 70’s ....LOL!!! Paint color for the walls and what to do with the cabinets and countertops have been making me crazy! If only the countertops were coming up or the tiles cracking....but NO... my Dad was a professional contractor...BUILT TO LAST.... EVEN THROUGH MY LIFETIME! LOL... Love and miss my parents deeply... but I want my dream kitchen! Wonderful....wonderful tips and great to see your kitchen...first time for me I think!

Jayne Brown I live in the house I grew up in, too, and after 14 years here we are finally updating the kitchen. I debated keeping the bookshelves that my grandfather built there, and finally decided to, but the rest is going to be very different. The yellow Formica countertops are gone! The cabinet fronts will be gone in a month. The format is the same, and this won’t be my dream kitchen, but it will finally leave 1965. Best wishes in your renovation!

Maybe to embrace the unique, one of a kind kitchen that you have? If the design was cohesive, it will be better than changing one thing at a time? Laziness can be your best friend! :)

Elena Vassilevsky Well I have only changed 3 things....pulled the old carpet up and put hardwood floors down that match the rest of the house. My Dad installed white oak flooring either before I was born or shortly after and I am 64. Then we had to replace a 10 foot long window and a 5 foot window because the glass was actually falling down due to its weight. Which led us to taking a 24 ft long wall out and replace it from water damage due to the windows. And of course appliance. The refrigerator actually caught fire ( the ice maker ) .... the wall oven could no longer be fixed,,,,the parts were no longer made and my cook top only had one burner that worked. So I think laziness is where I am at.... or lack of funds because of such a LARGE kitchen and the cost of items that after 50 years just simply could not be repaired. 👍 Sometimes it is NOT so much the want of some thing.... it is out of necessity that it be repaired or replaced so your home isn’t falling in around you.

💟Lovely Kitchen💟 A very warm & inviting space. Excellent points... 1) Most of us have to live a long time w/counters & tile. 💖 a more durable sub for Carrara Marble too. (Could live w/o a back splash bcos 💖small open shelves under upper cabinets that hold petite items like pretty cream pitchers, sugar bowls, tea pots, hooks w/tea cups, small tea tins, etc.) ◇Pattern & color is for curtains, linens, throw pillows that you can swap out.◇ 2) Your color mix looks fab, but I prefer a "classic crisp" over "creamy" white. 3) 💖 a vintage wood range hood painted to match cabinetry w/a corbels & a ledge for decorative plates or art. Much better to tuck microwave on a pantry shelf or in an island. 4) 💞Custom Pieces💞 like a wall mounted steel pot rack; a wood rack for dinner plates that matches cabinetry; wall mounted metal bottle drying rack for mugs; plate racks for display of serving platters & plates, a built-in bench seat w/cookbooks underneath; a bit of natural pine in room in a table or hutch; cubbies for hoard of small kitchen appliances. These are elements I would wish to incorporate in a kitchen. 40s Farmhouse Americana meets English Estate vibe. 🍽

Watching u and your friends. In the middle of kit reno. I do get the backspash when I bought my countertop they showed that to me but the reason I did'nt take it is because I wanted to be able to change it as time goes by. Afterall it is easier to upgrade Backsplash . So I'm glad I held off .I would've cried about that demo on the hutch.😔😔

My 2 cents.. I think the countertops would look better with a different color on your lower cabinets....Painting cabinets is super easy. Leave them on the hinges. Get chalk paint. And topcoat with general finishes flat.... I make my own chalk paint 3 tablespoons of calcium carbonate to one cup of paint. I mix it up in a thrift store blender. That combined with the general finishes flat, Everything just wipes right off my cabinets. Get an artist brush to paint around hinges if needed. Also I use dish sponges that you get from dollar tree they’re six in a pack. Just wipe on the chalk paint with the sponge, no brush lines.

I really enjoyed visiting with you and you sharing your regrets. I've been subbed to Lisa since she only had a few subs. I'm brutally honest. I'm a single older mother with a 17 year old. I just put in my granite counter tops this past January. I have the same trim you do my choice. My guy is a friend and he is the owner of a company here in Oregon where I live. They do flooring, cabinets, and counter tops. I had saved for Cesar stone, he told me not as good as granite, then his partner suggested the tile backing going up as you mentioned which I could do myself , and I had already decided on what you have. My friend ( the owner) told me it's up to me. So I went with how you have it and I LOVE IT!!!!! It looks stunning. I waited 18 years for those counter tops. I've had his company do my floors, my carpets, and now my counters. He told me how I already bought the granite why waste it. He also said I have so much space I can do that anytime. He knows I'm a single mom and is brilliant with his business. meI still have a pretty big piece in my garage. He said if I wanted they can cut the piece I have to what ever I want lazy Susan's for my dinning room table, windowsills. Don't know what I will do but, your kitchen looks great and I agree with you on changing your paint color. Thank you for sharing darling. I'm in nursing so off to work, stay safe and healthy! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Love the cream cabinets and the current counter top surfaces. They're a little different from the greys/whites and blacks out there and its awesome! Agree with backsplash- I went without for 15 years and wish I'd have installed it sooner. Agree with a bit of under counter lighting too. BTW, I love the light over your sink!!

There was a glitch from an older video that we accidentally marked as "made for children", and so even though the setting is now fixed, some people still can't click the bell depending on when they subscribed! You did a great job with your kitchen. We have granite counter tops in ours and they have that "backsplash" thing and I hate it. We bought the house with it almost two years ago. It eats up counter space! So when we redo our kitchen down the road that will go & we will do a tile backsplash. It'll be so much better!

building a new house, and I had to specify that wanted the 4" granite backsplash not a full tile backsplash bc love that look! not a fan of most backsplash tiles, hate the grout lines and would rather more pattern in the granite-love the swirls and movement-so tile competes with that IMO. love that wall color shows and just use a satin finish that is easily cleaned. funny how we all have different things that we love or hate about kitchens especially. Watching all of you, my favorite you tubers talk on this! Thanks!

I totally understand what you are saying. I purchased my home 13 years ago and I wish I would have chosen more neutral colors. I have painted my cabinets but stuck with dark granite. You can definitely add backsplash above that smaller granite piece. We had to have the same thing installed with our granite countertops because our old walls were not "square". But we also have tile on the wall up to the cabinets. I do think that changing your wall color would be helpful though.

Usually the granite "short splash" can be removed without too much problem. I also had an area with a gap between counter and wall but I found a subway tile that is thicker than most subway tile - it was a good 1/4 inch thick and covered most of the gap just fine - a little area has some extra caulk, but it looks fine. I did change out to a wood hood. I bought an unfinished wood hood and stained it to match my wood cabinets. It is a very simple one - they can get pricy, but the simple hood (came with a liner), vent insert and handyman install was $1000 - a few years ago. Those side shelves would be pretty with vintage platters:) Your granite is pretty - it is not trendy which is good - todays trendy is tomorrows dated. It is a timeless granite:) I love the glass front cabinets and you do have a good layout.

We put in quartz counter tops just over nine years ago. I would say they are similar in pattern to your granite. I chose it with the fact that I knew I likely wouldn't always stay with black appliances. Sure enough, our refrigerator gave out last year and I now have a stainless steel one. If white ever comes back in, I could totally even go with white appliances. My cupboards are mapel (because I did NOT want white with seven children), but I can see that eventually, I would like to go white or some other light/neutral colour. I think your kitchen is beautiful! I cannot imagine that it is ten years old already. It has a very timeless feel to it.

I've had different kitchens in different countries in different styles and age. My favorite was the hundreds of years old one my dining table fitted in (it's huge) and I could walk around with no problem. There was a sink in an old anitque table of stone, an antique cupboard and an old chimney for an old aga stove to put under, a closet with marble top to cut on with a plate and cups rack above all in walnut. All chairs were different and the floor was old wooden boards. just plain old white tiles with little cracks in it. A cellar with different cold area's to keep food safe. Perhaps a modern contracter would've had an heart attack when seeing it but it was cosy, practical and warm. Everybody always came to the kitchen, the kids made their homework and friends dropped by and sat there talking while I cooked. All the modern kitchens I had couldn't messure itself with that kitchen. My latest house has an open kitchen. It was there when I moved in. A huge stove and oven. Practical and modern and I so don't like it. Strange is it that you make mistakes in a kitchen design based on others and fashion eh.

I have cream color cabinets too, and tiled countertops. I have a muted green/blue countertop. I did this 20 years ago, in my tiny vintage kitchen, and I have to say, I actually still like the combination. I didn’t want the walls a stark white, or even to be a noticeable difference, so I actually painted the walls in a close color to the cabinets. Called clay. I used semi gloss on the trim. So my While kitchen looks like an aged color. Lol I also have a microwave above the stove, and barely use it. I have an old chandelier that has 3 arms, and came with the little shades. I don’t use the shades, just bare bulbs. I think it gives it an old look. And the fixture itself is that bronzed color. Also my faucet. And my knobs. I was thinking of refreshing my look. But I have always been rebellious lol and don’t like to follow trends. So I do have a ceiling fan in kitchen which, prob wouldn’t be considered vintage. And also my black stainless stove and fridge. But my things we’re not custom. If I made changes, I might want to paint the cabinets, and make them this clay color that’s on the walls. And maybe add a hood. But money has us spending elsewhere! Thank you for showing the things you’d change. I’m sure most people would make changes too to their kitchens!!

This is why I never follow trends (or at least I try my hardest not to) because they are what they are, right? I agree with the microwave above the stove, we have it and I hate it! We are a way off from our remodel but I do think I will be finding a new location for our microwave. I do like your kitchen though, it is very pretty. I am getting ready to Reno my kitchen. Do you think white cabinets are a trend? Would you do white or wood?
@BelindaTN
@BelindaTN 4 жыл бұрын
What would your true back splash look like if you could change that? I love creams and whites together. I think the key is to use the right shade of white that will blend with the creams. My favorite color pallet is many shades of whites, with none of them being a bright stark white. I have cream antique glaze kind of cabinets. Though the walls are a brown color, all the trim is white. It is how the house was painted when we moved in. Similar to the tuscan look. Though I would not have chosen it, I do like it. Except the granite counter tops. And I don't care for the under the counter mounted sink either. Can't figure out the best way for the dish washing liquid to set near it. In the past, i had a drop in style sink with a place for soap, dish washing liquid and anything else wet, that I needed to set there. The water would just drain back in the sink. Now anything wet just sets in water until I pick up the items and dry everything off. Several times a day. Also can't figure out how to clean the water spots from the faucet. Granite etches with chemicals that clean the water deposits off. So there is no way to clean water deposits off the granite, except to scrape it carefully with a razor blade. But I cant use that on the faucet or I will scratch that. Put a cleaner specifically to clean the water depostis from the faucet, and it gets on the granite counter top and etches that. I find it frustrating as all get out. High maintenance anything, completely blows the dream all over the place, for me. lol

What’s your opinion on wood countertops? I see them a lot in model pictures. Also if you want a white that doesn’t read blue/gray or yellow I went with SW Highly reflective white on trim....don’t think I would put it on walls though. I love the contrast with my cream walls.

Hi Sarah! Thanks for the tips! My new kitchen is being installed this week! 🙌 however, the cabs are looking a bit yellow to me (my sneaking suspicion is coming true). Any idea what color you would paint your walls to negate the yellow-toned cabinets?? I'm thinking just a different paint color behind the cabs would offset the yellow in mine as well! Thanks so much! Greetings from Michigan :)

So I have the same countertop and I just finished painting my cupboards an off white to go with that busy countertop, now I’m trying to find a tile to go with the two. So many decisions. I have picked out a cream subway tile with irregular sides not sure what color of grout to choose, subtle or a darker grout to highlight the tile backsplash. Any suggestions would be helpful, plus I need to paint the kitchen and even that decision is very hard any thoughts on what color you will choose for your kitchen and if you have a sample board of your picks, that would help me with my remodel. Thank you.

I cannot believe two contractors told you how to do backsplash and one added little shelves!! The nerve of them. I agree about the microwave. I actually had my microwave on my counter. I removed it (home built in 1962) to give more room on counter. I will be like Lisa Bass and have no microwave. I do not believe they are safe. I like your idea of corian countertop to look like Carrara marble. I prefer to save money. My backsplash would be white subway tile. Kitchen cabinets white. I barely saw your refrigerator. Farmhouse sink maybe. I like your idea of a custom hood. I like some open shelving. I wish there was a fuller view of your kitchen. 🏡.

Pretty kitchen! I'm working on ours now. I would have liked white or cream cabinets but I live with my son & he wanted dark. So I painted the 1960s cabinets in SW foggy day...which is beautiful Using sleek brushed nickel pulls & chandelier & fan trim. The new gas range & new microwave will go in as soon as possible after quarantine! Then rebuild the pantry with new doors & paint the last small section of cabinets. New windows --- probably next year. There are things I'd do if this was a forever home but he may be transferred so doing what we can to upgrade while keeping the costs down.

@@rhiannancaraway Marble and butcher block is easily damaged too. I cant imagine wood as a counter top around the sink or a stove. Marble is beautiful, but stains easy and will etch very easy from acids in foods. Concrete will too. I messed up a concrete picnic table that we had once. Vinegar spilled and ran across the top, and I was not in a hurry to get it off. It etched into the concrete. I suppose some kind of sealer might prevent that. But I would not want to be worried about that all the time.

each house I've lived in I picked my kitchen colours and counters the way I wanted I never have had regrets the contractors and the manufacturing kitchen companies tried to talk me out of my choices for resale purposes. I aways said thanks but I'm living it in if they the new owners want to change anything to make it more neutral I said they can. I've always sold my houses within weeks or days of listing! I do admit I love change so I always pick in expensive counter tops they come in a over 50 plus colours when you do laminate ! They are easy maintenance some can be textured and most offer different edging choices. Your kitchen is beautiful and I totally love your taste, and I can see that you would like a change after 10 years. do what your heart wants if you can justify the cost! have fun and enjoy the home you have

I love your kitchen layout and agree with all of your suggestions to change but one thing that kept driving me crazy was the light isn’t center of your window? My builder did this to me in my dining room and every time I look at it I just want to cry 😭! I specifically as him to center where my table would go and not the center of the room since I opted to use my breakfasts for my dinging room and my formal for a office 🙁. Now I have no way to to fix it without messing the whole ceiling up, my hubby told the sheet rock guys to orange peel the walls and popcorn the ceiling 😭😭😭😭😭👎👎👎! I guess the best thing to do is map out your specific planes on exactly what you want plus do a walk through showing them? I don’t know but I have so many regrets also 😭😭😭! Excited to see how yours turn out 💗💗💗
