I'm an interior designer, love you new home, so charming❣ Your beams will oxidize again after sanding & turn orange again, just the nature of pine to age & turn orange. - so in order to get a pale wood look you need to have your beams pickled, it is a type of transparent stain that has a white or cream base, it will keep your beams pale & you will still see the lovely wood grain & knots.

Hi Maddy, long-time follower here. I just wanted to comment on your "not having a break on the weekend". You say in the video that you should not vlog on the weekends because weekends are for a break, but then, just after, you mention that you are going to paint on the weekend. As much as I get the feeling of having projects done, painting on the weekend specially if you are going to vlog it is also work. Take time for yourself. As someone that is doing two studies at the same time I really understood the importance of having at least a complete day off (and I try to have two when I feel I can). Mental and physical health are a priority. Good luck with the renovations, lovely video like always!

Don't worry about leaving the beds empty!!! It's better empty beds than with dying plants because it's too much too handle! At least they look better empty than with the weeds
@JosiahDavidCarroll

Yes though I would say that planting a filler plant, like wild flowers or a grass or something actually is beneficial against erosion and occupies the soil so that weed seeds don't land in there and take over. Otherwise consider putting a tarpaulin over the beds to prevent weeds from growing.

If leaving beds empty a good idea is to sew seeds for what is called 'green manure' which is a plant that covers bare ground when not used e.g. field beans. Message me if you need any info xx

I think even if that hot tap stays a bit brighter in color, the sink is a lovely focal place and definitely not an unnatural place in a kitchen to have something stand out a smidge. Love those knobs!

I think the tap will dull down if it is solid brass.... if it's painted a brass color it probably won't develop a patina. It is lovely though!

I believe the metal won’t change color that much, especially compared to your lights - i think it won’t change and match in the end, lights are quite cool toned and faucet very warm gold... I’d say you need to make a decision as if it will never change the color at all, because it will be a disappointment for you to wait to become rustic and then it never will. Especially when kitchen metals usually are made to last, they shouldn’t change color in use, otherwise it’s considered faulty. If you don’t like the color - it’s probably better to find another alternative or maybe color it somehow. Although it’s beautiful faucet!

Unfortunately, I don’t think anything will lighten the wood other than bleaching them. As for your tap, it doesn’t look like it is the type of fixture that will patina (looks color treated). If the color really bugs you, you might want to keep searching for an antique tap.

You can age brass a number of ways- using wine or vinegar or commercial aging solutions. It needs to be real brass and you need to remove the clear coat first, but in several hours you could have the look you want. There are instructional videos on youtube. It is easy.

I am amazed by all the work you do! I remember many years back that Martha Stewart would soak her brass door knobs in paint stripper to remove the clear lacquer, then they would develop an antique patina. Just a suggestion.

Hi Madeline I love your beautiful blogs. Plant some wildflower seeds and cosmos in your beds that will bring in beneficial insects and bees that will be great pollinators for you garden. Love the beams but I do think overtime they will get dark again so consider coating with something that will keep them the color you like or even a light wash over them would give you that cottage feel. I have used a white ash wood stain to cancel out the orange hue on pine furniture before, not sure if it’d work with the beams but thought I’d chime in amongst the suggestions! Ps, I also have escape artist dogs, life is definitely less stressful now we have a secure fence. I think the dogs are more relaxed too now they know there’s no way out!

those "steel things" on the ceiling look like they could be drywall that were added to house the downlights. they could easily be taken off if thats sth you would think about. this way the beams would reach the outer walls which would help to calm the room tectonically speaking.

Definitely recommend getting the pipes boxed in, it will instantly tidy up the look. Ask your carpenter to keep it as small as possible and trim the shelves to sit in front so that it is more easily hidden. You will definitely need to treat the beams or they will just turn orange again over time. Your kitchen is coming on beautifully.

As a New Yorker who’s lived in apartments with weird pipes jutting out in places 😂 I can tell you that they make fastener plates that go around a pipe and covers the hole in the wall. So you don’t have to “patch” it or box it in if you can’t. It’s a really easy solution and not only does it make it look nicer it also keeps bugs 🪳 out!

I really like that lighter wood colour too, so would look into lightening as well. But I wouldn't paint that narrow bit on the last beam, and wouldn't paint the door either. I would sand the door and try to lighten it as well. And put little linen curtains on them. I imagine the curtains every single time you've showed that door lol.

You have probably all ready sorted this, but if the brass has been lacquered it will stay bright brass. Unlacquered brass will age darker, likely darker than your lights. I think mixing metal colors will be fine. You sink is a focal point in front of the window.

My husband and I have renovated and restored 2 homes. One was a Cap Code style home and the other was a Mid century modern brick ranch. We learned that spending money on the infrastructure is the most important investment. It’s not glamorous that you have to re wire, re plumb, replace HVAC, replace windows and doors but those are the most important issues. The aesthetics come over time. Give yourself some Grace and patience.

I sanded my old steps down to bare wood and they seemed very orange, not beautiful at all. I took white chalk paint and watered it down to a very thin consistency. Brushed it on the wood and then very quickly wiped it off. It turned out so beautiful. It looked as if I had bleached them. You remind me so much of myself. I totally “sweat “ all the details!!! They are so important because we know exactly what we want the end result to be. Love watching your channel. Good luck with the beams.

If you don't fill all of your beds this year please don't feel guilty (I have the same thing with the allotment I got this year - it's massive and I can't sort it out all in one summer!) - just lay cardboard and leaves over the tops of the ones you're not using. That way you'll keep weed seeds off the soil and help the soil structure and fertility for next year. Plus, there are some things you can plant much later in the year for overwintering (see Jess at Plot 37's videos for what to sow). Some time as 'fallow' beds is good for them, especially in organic gardening!

Madeleine! The tap may well have a type of “varnish” on it that they applied so it maintains that particular colour. It really is gorgeous the way it is. As for the beams, you shouldn’t worry about them being a consistent colour as they SHOULD look old with a natural patina and not something that came out of a box. The wood is natural and will age the way it individually wants to. Don’t worry about being “matchy-matchy”. It looks cottagey and wonderful. Although I agree with other commentators that you ought to put something on them so they maintain this look. They will reverent to piney orange if left alone. I am so envious! You have so much energy and drive. You have inspired me. Thank you for these vlogs! (I am in love with .Roxie despite the fact that I am a cat person. Her wee face at the fence. Bless.

When I go on this walk near mum’s, we’ve been monitoring the growing of some gunnera as they went from these tiny little things to humongous hints taking over the place. Magic! I wonder if they particularly love our Cornish climate. I have the opposite problem with clothes being such a shortie, crop length usually sit just on the ankle which looks ridiculous! The tap is great. It's like jewelry for the kitchen. If it's brass and the metal hasn't been treated with a clear finish, it will patina over time. Even though the kitchen beams are not as light as the others, sanding them has removed the blotchiness. Much better. (Eeeks! Using the pottery wheel with your engagement ring on).

You can use an a/b bleach on the wood that lightens the color. It's a mix of sodium hydroxide (lye) and hydrogen peroxide. It works really well, and quickly, but you'll have to be really careful using it as it's extremely caustic. Do a test patch because it can really profoundly lift the color of the wood to almost white.

you can lighten the wood beams with lime wax to keep if from yellowing.. usually not vegan as most wax is not, but some furniture wax is actually vegan.. :) Ive seen posts about DYI lime wax with (non-vegan) wax and paint, because lime wax is expensive and hard to find some places.. so maybe its possible to make with vegan wax and paint too :)
