I built a custom camera rig for my DSLM using various parts on Amazon for just $200.

This DIY rig costs just $200 and fixes the main problems I find with many DLSR/DSLM style cameras. My custom rig turns any DSLR / DSLM camera into a proper video production tool. It has a top handle, works with all sorts of cameras even the BMPCC plus its on a low budget for all videography needs
Main parts of my custom rig:
Viltrox DSLR / DSLM Camera Cage for Sony A7sII / a6300 / a6500, Panasonic GH4 etc. $55
amzn.to/2ynJUXv
Handle Grip $16
amzn.to/2xkWfNp
Saramonic SmartRig+ Audio Mixer $100
amzn.to/2jJkqR2
Mount Plate for Sony NP-F Battery $18
amzn.to/2hhBSYq
Dummy Battery for Sony Cameras $14
amzn.to/2xlGHsX
or
Dummy Battery for Panasonic Cameras $12
amzn.to/2xfYL5Y
Total = $201
Extra's that I attach to my rig:
Atomos Ninja Inferno
Amazon amzn.to/2xPRnkX
B&H bhpho.to/2yoA0EM
Azden SGM-250CX Pro Compact Cine Mic
Amazon amzn.to/2xlDBVC
B&H bhpho.to/2wwcys0
Portable LED Light
amzn.to/2jJxZjd
Shoulder Pad
Amazon amzn.to/2xlwlcA
B&H bhpho.to/2yp3PoH
15mm Rods
Amazon amzn.to/2ypCF1l
B&H bhpho.to/2wvIzR3
Lanparte Magic Arm and Monitor Quick Release
** Currently Out of Stock **
Main problem with using these small cameras is that there is no way to attach any accessories like microphones, lights, monitor etc. So I fix that problem first by putting a cage around my camera with various attachments. The next problem is the bad battery life that many of these cameras have. I attach a battery plate that accepts bigger and cheaper Sony NP-F style battery and then connect that to a dummy battery which I put inside my camera.
Another problem is the lack of professional audio connections which is easily fixed with the Saramonic SmartRig+. This audio mixer allows me to connect two phantom powered pro XLR microphones or two 3.5mm mics. It also allows me to monitor the audio with headphones and easily adjust the audio levels with physical knobs. This setup will work great for many different cameras such as Sony A7sII / a6300 / a6500, Panasonic GH4 and other similar cameras in size and function.

guys i wanna get a camera for music videos... i was thinking of going for the a6500 or the gh5; but i'm actually confused cause they both seem great. so please i need opinions on which i should buy and why?..thanks

@@somebody2781 GH5 better image quality options (if u plan do high color post), GH5 weakness: Autofocus. SONY A6500: excellent autofocus, great size for gimbal, cheaper, great cheap lenses (sigma 16mm 1.4 - sigma 30 mm 1.4) CONS: need external monitor, short battery life (external monitor can solve this (Fellworld AM5)), overheat (u can avoid this with external battery mount-solved with monitor and big and cheap sony batteries). SHORT ANSWER: GH5 for controlled studio situations with excellent image quality and cinematic style, A6500 nice quality - run and gun cheaper rig for cinematic style. REMEMBER body camera is only 50% quality, u really need GOOD lenses for high quality and cinematic shots, peace!

Great video! I love this stuff! I'm building similar set-ups for my Sony A6500 and it's fun to see what other filmmakers are doing as well so we're all progressing and creating together. I'll be doing a video on my rig some day soon! Keep it up, Tom!

I really respect Tom's work and videos for us newer newbs. Unfortunately, the low lighting and dark background in this video obscure most of the rig's features and details. Yes, I can follow directions but I'm a visual guy and being able to see the rig would have been much more valuable.

Wow Tom you make such amazing videos! Can you do one where you talk about when to use different kinds of stabilization? I am going to be filming a travel documentary for a group I work for, and I am not sure how I should be stabilizing. It would be great to have a video comparing advantages and disadvantages of handheld, shoulder, gimbal, and tripod stabilization.

Awesome video! A few questions: 1. How would you mount it if you needed a follow-focus system on the rails? 2. Would I need that external battery system if I am using the Sony A7III which will have much better battery life? 3. Which shoulder pad did you use? The link you provided seems to be for a less-expensive option. Once again, thanks so much for the great tutorial!

The position of your monitor is good where you can look directly at it. Some videos show the monitor vertically above the camera which is hard to look at an angle while you are filming?

Thanks, Tom, another really useful video for me as a beginner. I learnt a lot. I have a Sony NEX-VG20EH and a Sony NEX-7 and I was bracing myself for buying a completely new camera, but now I am thinking about giving my NEX-7 prolonged life instead, and rather be buying some props to it - a cage, a good microphone, a monitor/recorder (maybe), a shoulder rest, some external light, that Saramonic thing you demonstrated. So Tom, my main man, I have three questions for you: 1. Can I enter the future with the NEX-7 or do I need to upgrade to a more modern camera house such as Sony A6500? 2. I've heard of Gimballs and other steady cam concepts. How does the rig in this video compare to such? 3. If I am only going to create content for Internet, do I really need cameras with 4K capacity?
@AtticusKiser
@AtticusKiser 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom! I just want to make sure I get this straight.. when the audio out cable from the Saramonic audio mixer is plugged into the mic jack on the a6500, the audio is baked into the footage and recorded onto the camera's SD, right? And since there isn't a headphone jack on the a6500, you can listen to the audio using a headphone jack on the mixer itself, and monitor the levels visually with levels seen on the a6500?

At about 10:40 I do not understand why you say plug in the dc cable to the dummy battery. Do you mean plug into the power port of the camera? The dummy battery can be fully drained and the camera can still be powered by the external battery? I assume so since that is your setup.

Hey Thomas, have you ever used a wireless HDMI system to record to the Atoms? I can't seem to find anything online about that. I'm assuming the signal wouldn't be good enough for something like that but I could be wrong. I'd like to give it a try for some gimbal work.
@TomAntos

braden bickle the Cinegears wireless system i reviewed actually would be great for that since it's losses and uncompressed so you can still record the same quality as if you had the Atomos connected directly

I noticed that you have onyly one rail coming forward for a handle and that does not allow for a shade system that might include grads, filters etc. any more thoughts on that. It seems two handles coming forward would allow for more steady control. What about the the shade box setup, any recommendations?
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 5 жыл бұрын
I have two rails but don't always use both specially when I don't need a mattebox or filter or two handles. But if you need that then you can put the second rail in there.

For someone doing aa DYI You should have better lighting on your presentation and a less distractive environment in the background. You need to do a SLOW rotating pan around the set-up because it's really not clearly visible. In short, your advice should be as descriptive as what you are showing. I suggest writing a short script before you make your KZfaq and view it before you post it. Then you'll be seen as more professional instead of just "excited" about your new rig,

Why not just shoot on FS5 or FS7? I dont understand why your building up this camera. I shoot A6500 and the reason I like it is because it is small and compact. Its like your trying to turn a skateboard into a lifted monster truck. Many people also edit on laptops and complain that they do not have enough ports or ram or storage or small screen. Just use a desktop and keep the laptop as a travel set up. This camera is the same thing. I could build it up with many gadgets to make it function like a proper ENG CAM but why not just rent one? This is not the right tool for the job.
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 6 жыл бұрын
If you can afford the FS5 or 7 then yes they're amazing cameras. Unfortunately not everyone can afford those cameras so they want something cheap and small like the a6500 and then when they need to make it more usable for pro work they want to build it up into a more of a cinema camera setup.
@ScottStevenson
@ScottStevenson 6 жыл бұрын
I see where your coming from, I recently bought A cage and top handle for the A6500 to make it more suitable for some paid gigs I was taking that could not afford FS5.
