I wanted to do this to my living room last year but when I looked on KZfaq the only ppl showing how to lay over carpet were using wood planking underneath. I wasn’t trying to spend that kind of money. I found you a couple weeks ago and your idea of using construction paper was genius!!!! My living room looks absolutely AMAZING!! I wish I could upload pics on here lol.

@@snn2913 so far none! It looks exactly the same as when I put it down. Just make sure you push them really close together when laying them down. You should hear them almost snapping together. If not they will shift a bit because it’s just very sticky glue that is connecting them.

I was thinking this exact thing... huge pieces of plywood on top of my carpet doesn't sound fun to deal with... I did think of like... moving blankets or carpet matting etc but that was the best I could come up with, and obviously they're not 'hard' or smooth... this is freaking genius and now i have a great idea in using some old laminate i managed to score for free :D

Can’t imagine this lasts long. I’d imagine it’s going to flex when you step on it and eventually lead to cracks/breaks. As much as I’d like to do this in my apartment(because I hate the carpet in here). I’d imagine I’d only be happy with doing this up until the inevitable cracking/breaking of the new floor

I've had mixed results. I used cheap peel and stick vinyl from Walmart in one room and higher quality from Home Depot in the other. The home depot has cracked from foot traffic, the Walmart tolerates furniture being moved on it and has no cracks. The technique works, but thinner more flexible tile seems to be the best.

I've been thinking about getting that plastic mat stuff for office chairs that has the sharp teeth on the underside, then poster board then the wood vinyl stuff to avoid the carpet plush push down whenever you walk on it....gonna be expensive tho but I still wanna try it.

Perfect & geniuse. I need to renovate my apartment old carpet , coming from the walls. Leasing manager claims it's new, he must ment in the past tense as when it was put in that apartment years ago. I'm going to try the poster board with the tiles from Wish. Wish seems to have a nice asortment of light adhesive floor tiles that will brighten up my room. I put the privacy film on kitchen window and inspection came and thought I replaced the windows and was amazed. 😄😁

You are genius. I was just sitting here trying to figure out how to cover my carpet in my rental since my landlord is taking a while to replace it. And you came up with an amazing idea and way of doing so. I have a one year old who plays on the floor a lot and drops food and spills as well. And this would make it so easy to clean up and remove when I decide to move out. I'm heading over to Amazon and Lowe's and checking prices on the flooring and poster boards. Thank you for this great way to transition my home.

ONE ADDED TIP - Thank you very much for posting the helpful video! Just one tip to add - STAGGER THE PLANKS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. Rather than laying the planks in a straight "square" or "rectangle", with all the planks ending in a straight line OR using the SAME random pattern throughout the installation (giving the final result a "stair step" or "H" pattern), randomize the layout (stagger the plank) as much as you can (unless you want a repeated pattern, of course). Staggering the planks will do three things: -- #1) Give the final structure of the installation more strength; #2) Give the final result a professional look; #3) Prevent the long straight-line seams that are formed in square or rectangle layouts from catching dirt over time, making them more noticeable. The labor itself won't be anymore difficult, it will just take a little more time in planning. There are many websites that give instructions on how to accomplish a totally randomized installation/layout. (Google "stagger vinyl plank flooring".)

I absolutely love your method! I am looking for a solution to cover up carpet in my apartment for easy clean up.. are there issues with liquids going in between the edges of the individual pieces? In cases where you'd need to mop, if spills happen, animal accidents, etc.
@IdaAlexis
@IdaAlexis 2 жыл бұрын
hey! thank you so much 🙏🏼💙 I vacuum & use swiffer to clean. the wet pads get the job done better than mop for this set up. I would be careful and avoid too much liquid

Do you think this would work with a carpet that is a little bit thicker? Like do you think it would squish and move around even with poster boards underneath
@IdaAlexis
@IdaAlexis 3 жыл бұрын
Hey love, I wouldn't recommend doing it on a thick carpet because it will most likely squish. I saw another video where they added a layer of wood and then put flooring over a thick carpet.

Hey! Thanks for watching 🙏🏼💙 The floor was pretty solid for mw bc it was a very low pile carpet. I would be careful with a higher pile carpet because it won't sit as flat. What area of your home is this for?

Does it feel like hardwood when your walking on it or does it feel like soft carpet under?
@stefanjefferson73
@stefanjefferson73 2 жыл бұрын
Do not do the project like this. Think about it. The poster board is very bendy and thin. Lay that on top of any carpet especially medium to high pile carpet. Will simply not support the weight of a person walking over it. This will create a lot of movement thick like memory foam your weight will sink into the carpet underneath. You need 5 - 10 mm thick hard plywood NOT poster board on top of the carpet.
@IdaAlexis
@IdaAlexis 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Overall its pretty solid, but not 100% like real hardwood. This is a quick & budget friendly solution for people renting or those who want to avoid installing real hardwood floors.

@@IdaAlexis please don't take offense you've done a nice presented video showing a budget friendly way. I'm simply answering the question asked. If they do like this they will be redoing it a couple of years later. The more it's walked on the more indentations will appear much like memory foam due to the underlay (poster board) not being firm or thick enough for body weight walking on it.

Oh, this is a good idea! I don't see this working as well for high pile carpets like how most rentals have them. But this is an excellent idea none the less. Might be seeing myself do this here soon, I'm going to look for a property with laminate. But some landlords do looooove their carpet. (As it screams, "Let me keep your whole ass $3000 deposit over a tiny stain")

I will say that it probably wont matter honestly. Because if you didnt have the planks, then whatever gets spilled would have just fully spilled onto the bare carpet lol.
