DIY Fly Line Loop

We bought the Rio (www.rioproducts.com) Mainstream Saltwater fly line for our new Piscifun (www.piscifun.com) Sword fly reel; and made our own fly line loop. Yes, you can use an albright knot or blood knot if you are in a pinch, but if you have the tools and time then why not go all out. Check it out!

I used this method....though I only had some lighter thread....but I did use the cement which I'm glad I did as it made it a better connection. I then managed to go out and catch my biggest brown trout ever....monster....and this loop held up perfectly! Thanks Fly Fish TX!!!

This is by far the best way to put a loop in your fly line. You could also just whip one with 10 or 12lb mono, but this is cleaner looking. I have done it with mono doing a 10 turn snell knot, those loops are still on there after a couple years of heavy use and have not broken. And they cast just fine. Nothing wrong with nail knotting your leader on, but I kinda chuckle when I think about the cult following for some of the popular youtube instructors that are telling people to cut their loops off. I'll reinforce the loop with a snell knot before I go cutting it off, that's crazy talk lol

Cool tip! I had always used heat shrink tubing. (Works pretty good for small fish like bluegill and crappie) liked and subscribed

Thank you Oliver! Since we had two Piscifun Sword spools, once for Knuckles who is left handed and one for me which I am right handed; we got smart and actually added an extra couple of wraps of bright red thread to Knuckles' spool, so we could easily identify who's is who's. The spools are wrapped in different directions for a left retrieve vs. right retrieve.

I use a heat gun and weld my loops , just melt the fly line together and roll it on a table with your fingers ....sorta like rolling dough . then you don't have to use thread or the glue . but your way works good as well and I have done it both ways . good video on this method .

Always done my whining a lot shorter and used red nail polish to coat it. Never have had a problem with the loop coming undone.

I cut a tiny bit of fly line at the end. My old leader was in a tight knot and i couldnt get it off so i snip it right at the knot take a bit of fly line. Did i make a mistake? Im new to fly fishing.

Does the glue not make the tip sink? Could I just use Sally's Tough as Nails? That is what I have for fly tying

We haven't noticed that it causes the tip to sink all that much, then again, most flies we have been throwing sink so it really hasn't been an issue for the fishing we have been doing. You could certainly experiment with other glue or epoxy and see what works best for you. Note, you don't need to use a lot of it either! :) Tight lines.

I’ve used the Hell out Sally’s on about everything manageable on Flyfishing and Tenkara tackle ! Super glue works wonders like you couldn’t imagine! I’m sure you’ve probably experimented I use a lot of things that don’t cater to mainstream commercialism

Even if sink you can add non sink liquid or non sink powder for flies. But if you have sink line that doesn't matter.

Instead of using a whip finishing tool, try using a wire loop needle. Just lay the thread over the needle and pull the tag end through it.

Or just learn to use your fingers to do a whip finish. It took be ten minutes to learn about 35 years ago!

I've got some guerilla glue epoxy would that work for this or does it have to be fly tieing epoxy

I just use regular super glue but the uv glue is important to keep it smooth so it clears your guides especially if it's on the backing end

I was actually thought to use gsp for rot issues on standard thread. Either way when I apply AquaSeal after it doesn’t matter really anyways.

Yes sir. It's regular fly tying thread; I don't recall the thickness but it's pretty thick.

I have found the use of super glue turns the pink thread white when it gets wet and is not as effective as one might think as a indicator on a freshwater line. I see you use yours for salt water fly fishing and can see where the extra strength in super glue would be useful just my thoughts.....Great vid though and is very useful particularly for a learner

Check out what Flip Pallot says about how fly line loops are bad for your casting. He cuts off every loop and snells a heavy mono butt section to the end of the line. It makes a smaller connection and transfers the casting energy more smoothly. And you dont have to do this ^^^^^

Great Video but i do not recommend this for delicate presentation of flies (dry flies) or species of fish that are Easily spooked ie trout in clear water conditions. There is now WAY to much weight at the tip of your fly line (designed to be in the belly of your line not the tip) and it will produce too much of a splash/ disturbance when this lands in the water. For salt water or salmon on large rivers this would not be a problem.

Hi David! I agree with you 100%. This line was specifically for saltwater fishing, striped bass and LMB. You can throw a log chain at most stuff that this line is used for, LOL! Appreciate your comment. FishyB

Too much trouble until you're fighting a 40 pound striper that pops that nail knot and you watch your fly line disappear into the ocean. If you're fishing for trout sure you're fine
