I combine my love of Doctor Who and the 1950s in the latest installment of So Sew Vintage! We're sewing a full circle skirt! Due to the vertical pattern and size constants of the fabric we'll be making a 4 panel skirt. This is a fun and easy sewing project and the results are fun and fabulous!

Whoa. I love your fabric. I first found your channel because of your hair tutorials but now I really want to learn how to sew so I can make my own vintage clothes. Vintage clothes can be really experience and I have a hard time finding larger sizes.

I just wanted to thank you for this video and your others. I haven't whipped out any of my sewing stuff since I was a kid with my mom, but this type of skirt is my absolute favorite so you have my wheels turning about trying this out. PLUS, you are so personable and funny and specific - I couldn't ask for more in a tutorial. Thank you!

Thank you! I have been googeling for full circle patterns but usually the aps does not work for "larger" waistsize.. I figured hey it will work if I divide and cut my circle skirt in 4 panels.. New to your chanel and now a subscriber! Yey 👏👏👏🤗

Ooohh, I don't know anything about sewing but my mom is starting to teach me (I'm a bit afraid of loud noises so it's taking me awhile to get used to the sewing machine). I looked at the fabric and oh my God I don't think I ever want to leave this site...all the fabric is sooo pretty! *3*

Just what I do...when dealing with a new pattern, I make it out if muslin (if I like it, I tye dye it) If I don't, oh well I'm out Pennies when compared to fancy fabric. BTW, this summer I am knitting a Dr. Who neverending scarf for my 14 yr. old son who is a fan. Can't wait to see this skirt, plan to make my July 3rd girlie girl a red, white and blue circle skirt for her birthday!

I am super tickled that you replied; it made my morning (it was chilly earlier here in Scotland, so I needed a smile!). It's going all right, but I must admit I obviously wasn't paying good attention with laying out my fabric. My four-panel skirt has two with the pattern upside down. Whoopsie. However, as the pattern isn't very regular, I've alternated them with right-side up pieces, and will gear the upside down pieces towards the sides of the skirt. I'm so excited as it's already very clearly a great twirly skirt. :)

Sadly, it looks like the fabric is no longer available and I've never seen it anywhere else. You can probably find something equally fabulous by search for tardis in the spoonflower website. There is one slightly similar called blue phone boxes and black swirls.

How would I break it down into 6 panels? I want to make a circle skirt with 6 different panels. Any help would be great! Thanks! Great video so far. (p.s. total whovian and i need 6 panels to make a TARDIS console skirt!)
@JenniferElise
@JenniferElise 10 жыл бұрын
That will be an amazing skirt! :D Honestly 6 is an odd(ish) panel number so there might be an easier way to do this but I would do it this way. I would create a pattern piece for a 2 panel skirt (basically this pattern piece doubled, so double the amount of tracing paper), then I would carefully fold the pattern piece into a third. Like I said...probably an easier way but this works as well too so you don't have to futz with the math too much. lol

I ended up making a pattern for half the circle and then folded in thirds. Hope it turns out as well as I hope! Thanks for responding :)

Ive run into a problem making this skirt. In part three before making the waistband you say we should try on the skirt before application of the waistband. Well I cant get the skirt over my hips at this point so my circle hole is too small for my hips. Ive followed your instructions closely but seemed to have missed the part of hip measurements? Should we not take into account the hip measurements? I made the skirt based on my waist measurements entirely. There is a significant differance between my waist and hip. Any help on this would be highly appreciated. :)
@JenniferElise
@JenniferElise 9 жыл бұрын
mocciable I would do one of two things. Open the waist radius so that it fits over your hips...if you do this make sure that while your waistband is sized to your waist you calculate the elastic based on your hips so that it'll slide over the hips. The other thing you could do is insert a zipper instead of the elastic waistband. I hope that helps. :D
@mocciable
@mocciable 9 жыл бұрын
A Vintage Vanity Thank you for your prompt reply. :) This was really helpful, I think I will go for the zipper solution (easiest?) But If I would like to make another skirt based on your pattern, what should I do to prevent this from happening again? Should I use my hip measurements instead of my waist ? I love your tutorial by the way and was really bummed out when I messed up. :) Im a total sewing newbie and this is my first attempt to make a circle skirt. I thought it would be easier to make an elastic waistband than to insert a zipper but maybe Im wrong? :) Either way I havent done elastic or zipper before so Ive got some work cut out for me. ;) Thanks again for taking your time to get back to me, I really appreciate it!
