I love the trail and error of this video! It shows what to expect in real world conditions and it actually gave me ideas on how to modify the design based on how you measured everything. Great video!

I have seen about four other of the garden tower videos today and yours is the first one that I viewed that is using something round to make the holes. Great idea.. Thanks

if you water the holes down when the bottle is in it hardens much faster
@aftech72683 жыл бұрын
Use a 6 inch slit and space it 4 inches on between slits so it is symmetrical . use a more tapered bottle for ease of flexing use a heat gun so you don’t t burn the plastic. I like your idea of the post I’ll put caster wheels on mine

I just made one this morning. If you have an angle grinder with a cut wheel, it's really fast making the first cut. I didn't have a roofing torch, so unfortunately it took me a minute each cut just to make it soft enough using a butane torch.

Put PVC pipe in the middle with holes for vermicompost tube
@anesthesiadreamin2 жыл бұрын
I did that! And it works amazingly so! We dumped a carton of adult fishing worms (all big) into the planter, and a few months later had baby worms in the barrel. Also the compost coming out of the tube is sooo rich. Works really well 👍

Would it be better to drill guide holes at the end of your lines and use a jigsaw?
@anesthesiadreamin3 жыл бұрын
😁😁😁 smart idea! A jigsaw would be safer for sure. you would have to start a hole with something else for the jigsaw blade to fit in to get started, or jam the jigsaw blade forcefully inside. Or are you envisioning drilling a big enough hole on each end of the line that the jigsaw blade would fit in? that might be worth trying, because then the bottle might slip in easier 👍
@ellenchancey7703 жыл бұрын
@@anesthesiadreamin Yes, a hole at the end of each line for the jigsaw. Start the holes with a standard drill bit.

Hi. very nice idea. I will try it. what is the purpose of the white pipe in the middle plz?
@anesthesiadreamin2 жыл бұрын
It has holes drilled up and down it, and then you drop kitchen scraps in it, and as that breaks down into compost, the worms come in and out of the white tube and feed on that, and then the compost leeches out of the white tube through the holes into the surrounding soil as you water it. So it self-composts 👍
@anesthesiadreamin2 жыл бұрын
Then after two or three months, you open the hole in the bottom of the white tube, and get the compost out, and then bring it back to the top of the dirt barrel and put it in the top of the dirt. Of the dirt. Now that compost will leach down through the soil to the bottom of the barrel

Have a question... do you see that you might have to change the soil every couple years? I see that you only have this for about five months so I might be asking a little bit too soon but what is your suggestion?
@anesthesiadreamin3 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew the answer to that, I would just be guessing, but I think if you have worms constantly breaking apart the soil, making worm castings, and you recycling the nutrients dripping from the bottom and pouring back on top, I think the soil should last at least a year or two. But again that's a guess. Nature doesn't "change the soil" per se, but maybe analyzing the soil with the soil test kit might be something to keep on top of every few months, just to make sure the pH, phosphorus, etc don't get far out of whack. Maybe ask this same question to one of the KZfaq video posters that's had their barrel video out for longer, or someone that has done a bunch of barrels. Sorry I'm not more help, but thanks for watching, and for your question 👍

Also, check out Tim Burrows on youtube, he has made a bunch of barrels, and he might be able to answer your question better.

Probably, have not tried it, could make it more brittle, but it might work just fine, IDK for sure. Try it out, and let us know!

About 3 months after making the barrel, the weight of the soil is starting to bend my openings closed again. I think for my next barrel, I'll simply drill large holes as openings.
