I turned glass bottles into furniture legs and reinforced them with epoxy. This DIY bench or coffee table uses a large glass bottle as one of the legs. I coated the inside with Total Boat Table Top Epoxy to reinforce the glass. Structural glass is an interesting idea and epoxy reinforced glass bottles could be a good way to experiment with budget friendly DIY options

Hey, how about : to prevent your epoxy to gather at the bottom and have a more uniform finish around it : you use your wind power rock tumbler to turn the bottle as it dries ? :D

I like this idea! the tumblers I have are not long enough for these bottles. I think a high speed vertical spinner might be interesting to get to spin outward

Try rotating the bottle continuously whilst the epoxy cures to get an even layer/color on the inside using a grill rotisserie motor. They're cheap and easy to rig up to rotate the bottle. I use one to cure epoxy coatings on homemade fishing lures. It gets a nice even coat. Pretty cool concept with the bench!

4 glass legs would also be nice to give a bench seat or tabletop a floating appearance, you just need to drink more!

What about putting the bottle on the rock tumbler motor so it continuously rotates while curing. might give a thicker layer on the sides

Love the homemade safety glass concept! I wonder if you could use one of those rock tumblers you just set up to keep the bottle rolling while the epoxy is curing to get even distribution on the sides.

Great idea! If you let the bottles rotate on one of your rock tumblers, the resin will coat the bottle walls evenly as the resin starts to cure and get thicker until it gels and turns hard. 😊

Cool project, I like the look. What if you put some blue and brown beach glass in the bottle and added epoxy to that?

Love the stain and the creative idea. A suggestion: Maybe add clear sea glass to the bottle for effect? Using the bottle as a vase would muddy the water after a few days and then the bottle would need to be cleaned.

You'll need UV protection for the epoxy but you know that already. Interesting, I'd like to see the break test once you've applied coats of epoxy on the outside of the bottle. Also you can get the wooden plugs to just about disappear if you use a plug cutter to make the dowels/plugs and again you probably already know that. Thanks for the video.

Did you try a heat gun on the resin? That works to get the bubbles out. Lot cheaper than the vacuum setup, too.
@HomeMadeModern

great question! I did try it but it wasn't able to get the bubbles through the glass and it couldn't get low enough down the bottles mouth

Can you recycle the glass bottles if ever they break, if they have epoxy coating on them? I like reusing glass because of its reuse and recyclability , but if the epoxy means it’s no longer recyclable then it defeats the purpose imo

I like the Creativity - BUT - *This is a terrible idea.* There is a reason that they don't just coat Glass with epoxy and call it a day (real safety glass is designed to be under tension that so WHEN it breaks, it breaks into small shards and not long pieces that cause major damage). By the time that you add enough epoxy to the *OUTSIDE of the Bottle up through the neck of the bottle* so that it won't be a danger to some kid with metal football cleats swinging their legs under the bench then it won't be viable. Now if you used Concrete by itself or a Plastic bottle filled with Resin then that would be cool as I like the idea of incorporating a Vase into the Bench.
@HomeMadeModern
@HomeMadeModern 9 ай бұрын
there are multiple types of safety glass designed to meet different scenarios. I think the statement about it not being viable to coat the outside is incorrect do to the absolute nature of it

@@HomeMadeModern Of course it is *possible* to coat glass enough hold up the single side of a bench when over 1,000 lbs of shear force hits it (the weight + momentum of 2 large adults sitting on the bench) but where exactly is that point? There is a reason that commercial safety glass is required to meet certain standards and be registered. But I'm sure that using a random jar (how thick?) with a random amount of epoxy (are layers bonded correctly?) and that covers the entire bottle (including the curved neck section) *as a support item in a piece of furniture will be just fine.* Again, I think that the overall idea is creative if it was built as an Art piece that does not have to support multiple people OR using another material that is more predictable OR even better, *build it as a table instead of as a Bench.* But hey, that's what Lawyers and Homeowners insurance is for (to hold reckless people accountable if they build something using materials clearly not meant for such a use)

This is so incredibly pointless and uses so much more material than another piece of wood in place of the leg would have.
