If you're anything like me you've got boxes and bins of odds and ends from other projects that you've kept for a rainy day. Well, in this video I finally put some of those parts to good use and build myself a rocking skeleton animatronic Halloween prop!

I have to say, the bungee cord with ball end is exactly what these skeletons need for making the shoulder/arm movements more flexible and "lifelike". The whole video tutorial is great, but that was a real DIY gem! Maybe a tutorial on how to make these pose n stays more pose-able? Thank you for sharing your talents with us!

Thank you, it's good to see a build that doesn't involve laser cut or 3-d printed parts, just stuff that's laying around or is easily available.

Beautiful. I’m hoping the “something more” is a little bit of head movement. Perhaps weight it so the head stays in a constant plane as the torso sways side to side?

Great video ! Loved the "Dramatic Recreation" with your wife, lol ! 😆 Looking forward to see what is next ! I am so glad you posted this as I am a beginner & made a super simple skeleton in a black "box" last year. Would love to animate the top half, and you've given me time to get it done by October, lol ! 😆

Great video Derek. This is exactly the kind of prop stuff I want to learn (automation, electronics….the things that give life to a prop). I was just at the Disneyland haunted mansion last week….and I was wondering many of these mechanics at that moment And I love the B roll storyboarding. Very funny and entertaining

Awesome! My Halloween switch snapped on this week (and none too soon, only three months of build time left!). I watched this while carving a stencil for gobos for my haunt lights, and sketching a design for a cemetery gate for the driveway. Excited to see the conclusion, I have some props from last year that I’d love to animate!

Life fuel! This has been a tough year so far, and one way I am staying reasonably sane is to keep my eye on my Happy Time... Spooky Season! I often don't copy your designs directly (though sometimes I do.... looking at you, rocking tombstone!). But The techniques are fantastic, and I often use them to augment my own projects. Big fun! First of all, let me say that I think as a builder and as a Halloween designer--I think you are awesome and I love how you think. Your videos are great and greatly appreciated. While every project that we endeavor, as builders, is going to be unique to the materials we use and the design decisions that we make, you do a very good job of showing how you got from A to Z. One thing about this project that I had to learn the hard way and if you mentioned it in the video I missed it and that is the adjustment of the position between the center rod and the motor's mechanism is a make-or-break distance. The first few times I tried to run my motor it was getting jammed up and would not move. It would lock-up and I would have to take it apart to adjust the distance of the hinge placement. Ultimately I figured it out through trial and error. I think you may have gone through something similar that you mentioned in trying to get a precise length of the mechanism arms. While I do think you mech arm lengths are very good for the range of motion that your prop has (which is ideal), the one thing that caused me the most pain was this spacing of the hinge to the motor and the height of the connection to the mech arms. I tried to look at your video a number of times to see if I could see where your placements were located and that did give me a starting place. So, please understand that this is not a critic, but a request in your future videos for more 360 video views of the final prop or even stages of the prop. That helps other builders see what you have done as we adapt our version of the prop. Thanks again for your great videos!! tT

This looks great. But I wouldnt know how to power the controller. I saw you listed the part in the desciption. But do you have a video on how to wire this up?
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps Жыл бұрын
It varies from motor to motor, which is why I didn’t include it. Most motors will let you know which wires are positive/negative/ground and the speed controller has markings so indicate which goes where.

What do you do to waterproof a lot of your controllers/outdoor wiring? I typically use reindeer motors due to the simplicity of waterproof by nature and all of my indoor props use wiper motors and relays, but all of the terminals are exposed. Do you put your controllers and power source/connections in a box?

I try to hide them inside of props, but I also have the benefit of being in a location that don't get much rain.

Can you help me to understand how you did it with the motor. I cant buy from monsterguts because i live in the wrong country. But if i buy a wiper motor from a old car or just a brand new one. How can i know which ampere on the speed controler i should use and what dc adapter i should buy to get the right one so i dont break the wiper motor. Or is it just buy what ever you want and everything will work just fine? Thanks
@VanOaksProps
@VanOaksProps Жыл бұрын
The wiper motors should say what their power requirements are when you purchase them, so that will help to determine what kind of power supply is needed to power it. As for the speed controller, it's the same. You need to know how much voltage you're controlling and then purchase a controller designed to handle that voltage. Hopefully that makes sense.
