It doesn't actually hurt that much, especially with the ice cold water right next to it. If you're like me and have done wax candles enough then you just get used to it and it doesn't hurt anymore.

i've done this before at a wax museum. it's not that hot and doesn't hurt when you put your hands in, but 2 layers is definitely not enough. and DO NOT put it anywhere near light. it melted in just a few days in my room because of the sun.
