I would have countersunk the metal handle and used countersunk screws !

3:37 use longer screws that go into the sub floor that way you ain’t lift the laminate floor that’s only held by glue

Food for thought, you might want a looser fit. Wood swells dramatically with enough moisture, heat, or freezing and thawing. I would suggest a looser fit and rub wax all over areas that rub together when you lift the hatch.

And I would break the joints and everything and do it very cleverly so the grain looks like it flows all the way through

Great video! Was the hatch part of the job as easy as it looked? I’ll be laying flooring in my closet and it has a hatch just like yours. Hoping it’s not as hard as I think it will be

Since these floors are floating, shouldn't there be something to account for movement? Or are you glueing the floor down around the opening as well? Thanks

Hired a flooring contractor. Asked them to do this. They show up with no materials to make it. End up doing it myself. Thanks for the detailed video.

Great video, But I have the same thing in my place, giving me access to the crawlspace where I have the jet pump, bladder piping etc. I recently had all the filters run up to the main floor for easier access since sometimes they are a bit of a issue to break the seals. My Question is why not install a hinge? I have found popping the hatch in and out a leaving it lay on the floor or wall has left dings and marks every where. Thanks

What is the risk of the outside plank coming loose, since it has little tongue/groove on one side? Do we need to glue that?

That was my question. Do you glue down the pieces of laminate surrounding the trap door as well?

What if you need to install an underlayment between the plywood and the laminate floor? Would you just glue the underlayment to the plywood and then the laminate floor to the underlayment?

This is an interesting Question... thinking the same myself also...ty

I would use plywood or other material of the same thickness as underlay just in the area of hatch to make it the same level.

It looks like an decent job for sure Gentlemen.. I am not carpenter as per say..... but if a/any person does take time to post a utube video and a person Takes time to watch any persons posted UTube video and is serious enough to ask a question about a hatchwork/ how to do things/suggestions or modifications or whatever ....shouldn't these Questions, Negative or Positive, be answered by person or company that has it posted ?? Just asking... as i see this away to often of unanswered question by viewers .... ty

Shouldn’t you countersink the square part of the handle?

Did you consider putting on lifts since as we get older who wants to keep lifting the hatch that way? We have one that is so heavy two people have to lift it. Horrible design in our house.

Oof this is pretty bad, and better ways to do this. Like use am overlap for the wooden floor so there is more consealment ofnthe hatch. The steal real part in the middle...you have the tools to sink it even with wood altough I woundn't just use a lose board over it that can be removed. Also some hinges so you don't take tje whole thing out of it. Killing your back someday or damaging your floor putting it back. Besides all this, well done.

You lost me at the hatch handle All you need is a simple hole like an eighth of an inch wide with a coat hanger slightly bent or opening this hatch and it will be well-headed and you can keep a tiny plug in it if you're worried about ants coming through it or whatever
