In this video IggyFam Fishing shows you how to make a rain barrel from a recycled coffee barrel. Rain barrels not only save water but also reduce costs with irrigating our garden. It was very easy, affordable, and didn't take long to make.

You should have drilled the hole in the gutter pipe a few inches higher so it would flow in much better.

Nice video. what did you think of that diverter kit versus your DIY setup on your first rain barrel? Do you fin much shingle gravel or leaves make there way into the barrel when going through the downspout? Thanks

Hi Paul! I really like the diverter kit because everything came in one package and it worked perfectly for that location. The DIY setup was necessary because it was on our deck and the gutter did not have an extended downspout for the diverter. It's extremely satisfying watching the water falling into the barrel though 😀. As far as shingle gravel and leaves, I have leaf guards on my gutters so leaves don't end up in the barrel. Shingles do end up in the barrel but not enough where it obstructs water from coming out. Hope that helps!

Skip the spigot, 1 gal. a minute ( too slow) Use pvc 2 inch valve. Unless you are ok with watching a 5 gallon bucket take forever to fill.

What size drill bit did you use to make the hole for the garden hose?

Hi Wylie. The drill bit size for the garden hose/spigot is 1 1/4".

Hi there. Great video Could you pls further explain the holes around the top to prevent mosquito larvae ? I thought if you put holes then they can get in ??

I could be wrong but I think those holes are to prevent water build up on top of the rain barrel. I was wondering the same thing.

@hotdog748 is correct. It prevents water from building up on top. The water escapes down the sides of the barrel.

I noticed you son touched the hole as soon as he was done drilling. That's fine this time, but a great time to teach him, you normally DO NOT touch a hole you just drilled since it will be extremely hot. If it is wood or metal, you can get a blistering burn and even plastic too if it were thicker material and took longer to get through it. Just passing a tip. Great Job though, and very practical.
