DIY How to CHALK PAINT a fabric LAMP SHADE with a heads up for some shades!

Always loved this lamp and the shape of the shade just not its color. So here is what I did to change it.
Vacuum dusted the lamp shade before I started. Then watered down my chalk paint to 50/50 or 60 water/40 paint. Painted 2 coats with a light sand between, and that was it! Worth seeing what it does to the inner layer of this fabric lampshade before you attempt this on yours as there was a less than even bleed through. Lights out it look PERFECT! Lights on...it's a tad off but I still love it!

Thank you I found a few lamps I liked but not the shade and they can be a little pricey so now I know Im going topaint them but I'm going to paint the inside as well!!! So happy I found this and I liove the plants as well I am a avid plant person

Thank you for watching! And good luck with the lampshade paint-over. You might want to go to a thrift shop and pick up a lamp for five bucks, or just a shade, to do a practice run. As for the plants that is my husband‘s hobby, I get to just enjoy watching them grow;)

I painted the inside using 50 50 mix in a spray bottle then lightly brushed with a paint brush...

I had not considered chalk painting a fabric shade. I wonder if a highly concentrated dye might give the same effect and saturate the fabric evenly? The shades I want to redo are burlap over shade plastic. Repairing a tear in the shade first is my point of pain.

Technically, that sounds like it would work. But if in doubt perhaps your local thrift shop has a cheap similar lamp shade you could test it on first? The plastic part you mentioned doesn’t sound like it will take the dye but considering how blotchy my interior fabric turned out that might be a good thing! Good luck on the sewing, if it’s major and doesn’t respond well why not embrace it and sew with a bold contrasting color...or make it like a branch and sew little cherry blossom petals along it so it becomes intentional? Also, will the paint tolerate the heat of the light bulb well?

It should as you are essentially dying the fabric on the shade.

Can you use any brand of chalk paint?

Absolutely, it’s all about the minerals/chalk that is in the paint so they all should work. May need another coat but odds are it won’t. That is if you are going darker. Don’t really know if any can take the piece to a lighter color.

Can I use other kinds of paint? Is chalk paint the only kind to paint a fabric shade?

I haven’t tried any others so, I don’t know for certain. But the general idea is that when you have something like a chalk paint or mineral paint, it has the type of pigment that can stay or add enough color to the item.

The paint color is black indigo, it now comes in two sizes amzn.to/3le6HOv (8 0z) or the size I have amzn.to/3lh1C85 (32 oz) You really have to love blue for that size because this paint goes a long way!

Why didn't you pain the inside? that would have looked better, would it ruin it.?

My only concern was the reflective ability of the white fabric would have been lost. But you are right, it would not have ruined it at all.

@@AskingSpot Yes and I believe when you turn on the light you wouldn't have that terrible look. Why not do one with the paint done on both side and turn the light on

That would absolutely work. My hope was to keep the inside light to help with reflective light but as this is more of a decorative lamp, it could be painted inside as well.

I'm sorry, but the finished, painted lampshade looks horrible. The light it casts is uneven and cheap looking. What are you going to do on the inside?

Sorry you didn’t like it. I love blue so to me it’s a vast improvement. As for the inside, it is rarely seen so it doesn’t bother me and as this is a side table light so it isn’t on very often either. As for my recommendation for anyone else trying this: be aware of some lampshades having layered fabric. Thanks for the feed back!
