This gentleman took the time & trouble to make a video to show you how he did a project. Have the detractors shared their experience? I doubt it. Please don't be rude to those who go to trouble to be helpful. And maybe he lives in a cold place and has a heater inside for winter, in which case, the foil faces inside. Maybe you, commenter, live in Florida. This is an excellent, helpful video, clever and to the point!

MelloCello thank you, I do live in the north and do have a heater in the garage. Also the gap was corrected with the new cement pad. Nothing has broken since adding the weight. You Rock!!!

@@JamesKoorey ; Great video. I agree with MelloCello about the detractors. Just to shed some light on why the detractors are all freaking out (seemingly about the same thing) is there are a lot of other videos on YT explaining how they insulate garage doors and your method is a departure from the vast majority of the existing methodologies that seem to be very similar. But that is good thing, IMO. Why do we all want more of the same thing? You obviously took a lot of time and forethought if you were outside getting "B Roll" on the garage dents so you could edit the content in later. That alone puts you in the top 1% of content creators out there. Thanks again for the great video and your time and energy. I very much enjoyed it and found it beneficial in my project to do the same. Looks really clean too. Wouldn't have known it was DIY at all. Just remember James, if you had really failed at this, then this entire comment section would be empty. Dogs don't bark at parked cars. You must be doing something right.

Just a suggestion. I believe cutting the slots in the foam to help install it reduces your R-value. Though not significantly I believe it reduces it more than the method I used. I cut my panels in half using a razor knife and then put the bottom half in and put the top half in pulling the bottom panel out slightly to create a v in the two panels and then pushed the two panels in together and taped them with special tape that is made for these panels. I don't believe the spray-on foam is any advantage at all because of the differing expansion rates of the materials. The properly sized panels with those lips at the top of the bottom and properly taped should hold them in place. It did in my case.

Nice work, last week I insulated my garage with typical (pink) r13 fiberglass insulation rolls, my garage was just studs and siding, I'll be putting up walls soon but I was gonna do what you did to the door first to try and keep as much of the elements out so thanks for your method
@tedg37214 жыл бұрын
put some aluminum tape to seal in each panel on the edge of the insulation boards where they meet the frames of each door panel. this will seal it even better. but good job with the spray foam atleast to glue on those boards.

Here at Hunter Door service in southern New Jersey The difference in price of a hollow garage door and a Styrofoam back garage door is between $60 and $80. The benefit is it comes with the correct springs so the door is perfectly balanced and won’t wear the soft plastic gear inside your garage door opener. If you take on this DIY project be sure to put a bathroom scale under your garage door and make sure your door doesn’t have more than 8 pounds of deadweight. If it does then referred to other garage door KZfaq videos on how to balance your specific spring system to accommodate the additional weight of the materials you used in this DIY project.

I'm watching this video MUUUUCH later since it was first posted, but have already watched it multiple times over the last few months - and this one is simple, and has been the driving force to convince me to NOT go with the kits and opt for this DIY. THANK YOU! I actually missed the little detail of relief cuts completely so thanks for mentioning it as I've seen many (too many) other videos where they don't do that and the foam pops and breaks. I'm super nervous about my measurements given I'm always just a tad off but seeing this, I will deff "encourage" my husband to help me with them as he always manages to avoid assisting my home improvement projects and woodworking then critiques my off angles and sizes. Hope to have as much success as you did, thank you!

Agreed. I think most people just skip the instructions on the back and spray it as they would 99% of all other trigger-style spray cans. I'll admit I didn't know until we used so much of it that we bought one of those Great Stuff pro dispensing guns that holds the can in that upside-down position. We had much better results after flipping the can, even without the dispensing gun.

As per your request, yes I like your vid; and it gave me some good ideas and a starting point. I have to control the climit in my garage this summer as I have several mining rigs which heated my entire 1st floor by just using the HVAC fan to circulate the heat all through the winter, and not only did it offset the normal billing average from last year, but I saved on or about $65.00 per month. My rigs are whisper quiet so they severed a dual purpose. I have one garage door and a window I need to insulate, and the A\C unit will also go in that window. I wired a 12X30 detached garage with 120v & 240v, and was going to set that building up to build a mining farm; however it has a fiberglass roll type front door and figured it would be easier to insulate the traditional style garage door. I will use the 12x30 as a workshop, as dust and heat are the primary reasons electronics fail. Thank you for sharing brah, I wondered how the relief cuts many only minimally affect efficiency? However if you use the expanding foam in the relief Cuts before you do the flex insertion possibly that would just mitigate it completely? Very Respectfully, WX2
