Before you start cutting your fabric, understand that his tutorial makes a narrow brim, which doesn't make a standard bucket hat, but does make a lovely feminine hat base that you can put ribbons and flowers on, pin up one side, etc Vintage hat appreciaters will love it. This is a great tutorial on measuring and the concept of slashing and moving the bottom squares to make extended curves. And it's also a wonderful math tutorial that I needed to brush up on. To make a wider brim, fold the paper 3 times, instead of 2. The 5/8" measurement between each square will still work, in between the squares. And yes the beautiful dish towel is handwoven.

There is a more simple way to calculate the radius for us people who got lost there. Take the circumference of 22 inches divide it by 3.14 which gives the answer 7.00 diameter (and a few more characters which we can ignore) then divide it by two to get the radius.

Pye what pie i hope its apple. Wow very different project. May look at doing it for the summer months here. Must get my EPP quilt finished first. It’s the 108x108 inch quilt. Need to get it finished by 2nd March when I have both hands sorted for carpel tunnel. You will be in my thoughts. Hehe. I have a tendon in one hand to be removed as well. So hope mine doesn’t take as long as yours to heal.

I'm looking forward to the next instalment, Christine, as I have some groovy, cotton duck scraps that would look great as bucket hats. One question, is there supposed to be an inch difference between the circumference of the crown and the length of the band?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Жыл бұрын
Did you measure with or without seam allowance Jirup?
@jirup
@jirup Жыл бұрын
I haven't measured anything yet. I meant the difference in your measurements. There seems to be an inch difference (crown 22" circumference and band 11.5" folded). Is this just a rounding error and the crown circumference is actually 23", or does the band need to be eased into the smaller circumference of the crown?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Жыл бұрын
@Jirup, I've had a look at the video, and it could be that I have rounded the curved measurment up. Possibly even the positioning of my tape measure was out. Because of the curve, everything did still fit well together, but to be sure, measure each pattern piece against its neighbour before cutting the fabric.😀

Hi Christine. I am catching up on some of your older videos and came across this bucket hat drafting. I have made many hats this way, reversible... and drafting much the way you have. My constant issue is getting the fit right. My hats always end up a bit tight. What sort of ease do you add to your head measurement?
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs 5 ай бұрын
Jennifer, I didn't add any ease to the measurement, but did add allow for a looser fit when measuring😀
@gloryunderfoot700
@gloryunderfoot700 Жыл бұрын
I have a question about the math: when you measured the quarter of the circle to get the measurement for the side of the hat, you measured 5.75, but if you take your original head circumference measurement of 22 and divide by 4, the measurement is then 5.5. Does that quarter inch difference give you wriggle room, or does it not matter? I’m a novice sewist, so I apologize of the question is silly.
@ChristinesHomeAffairs
@ChristinesHomeAffairs Жыл бұрын
You may have misheard Glory. Take this formula. 22" ÷ (2 × 3.14) = 3.5" Alternatively you can do 22" ÷ 6.28 = 3.5" 😀
@gloryunderfoot700
@gloryunderfoot700 Жыл бұрын
@@ChristinesHomeAffairs, I get how you found the radius, I’m asking about when you measured at 9:04. Thank you
@ChristinesHomeAffairs

Glory, that quarter inch would end up being half inch when you consider the whole hat. 😀
