If your mercedes s class is stuck in park, it's probably a broken plastic piece in the shift box used as a safety to lock the car in park. When it snaps, you can't shift out of park at all. Here's a quick two minute video of how to remove the piece. The work was actually done on a 2002 S430 (W220)

To give you the full details of my ordeal surrounding my car being stuck in park would take up more space than I am allowed. It was quite a frustrating experience. Thanks to your knowledge and willingness to share I was able to make my own repairs. I had no money for a tow truck or a mechanic of any kind. All I had was your video, a few tools and faith. Thank you sir a 1000 times.

Thanks so much. This video was is the only video online that really shows how to remove the pin/clip on a 2004 or later Mercedes s-class. Excellent instructions.

I have a 2003 S430 and had the same problem with my gear shift locking up. I followed the instructions on this video and was able to get my car out of park. Thank you so much. You just save me $1200.

This was a life saver! I used your video, an Ipad, and fixed the problem. My s430 was a yr 2000 model, and the shift box was made such that you can take that broken piece out. I had to drill the broken plastic piece and take it out in pieces. But it still fixed it. I'm just posting this for some folks who might have an earlier model like me. Again, thank you for this great video!

this was fantastic. I just finished. I'm a not an expert....so it was a bit of a challenge. it took me about 4 hours to do . thank you for this video. I used it on my tablet. There's no way I could have done this without KZfaq!

Great DIY, thanks for your time and effort putting it online. It took me only 3 hours to repair the gear selector, and yes the plastic part came out exactly as the one shown.in 2 pieces. I called the Merce"des service and got an estimate of +1.000 USD for the repair with the car imobilsed for atleast 3 to 5 days. As an independant taxidriver I need the car all the time ready to go. Thanks again !!!

Loved the video, saved me tons! For all who have this issue, I just fixed mine today and this video was a life saver! Took the piece out completely, no new part put in. Shifts anytime now... But at least I can put it into drive! If you have any questions I might be able to help!

Thank you so much for this video. It definitely made the process doable for a modestly skilled home mechanic. Interestingly, my black plastic piece was fine in 2003 S430, but I disassembled the shift lock instead of trying to troubleshoot what was wrong. I'm guessing either solenoid or something before the solenoid was bad.

I was having the same issue with my shifter. I noticed it was becoming harder to get out of park. so I ordered the part. Before the part arrived it got stuck in park. So I took everything apart, removed the broken lever and epoxyed it once it dryed I reinstalled it. It worked great. It shifted very smoothly. Drives like new. It's a temporary fix until the part comes in. The epoxy is very strong so it should last a while.

This was amazing. I had to call the AA out in the UK as I have been banging the shifter to get out of Park, while I pondered on the £420 + VAT cost of a new part and 2 hours labour costs...! I have an S320 CDI Anyway, the AA man used this video and together we stripped down the car and found the offending broken plastic piece. Can you buy this plastic piece alone? Anyway, I have a Key Less go model ... it works OK now but the shifter will now come out of Park without the brake.

This plastic part is a major defect on these vehicles as it clearly is not designed to last more than ten years and completely disables the car when it breaks. This is my contribution to help alleviate the unwarranted high cost of Mercedes ownership. ;^)

my 03 is only sticking when it is very cold outside, like -20 C and below, when car is in garage - no problems, when car is parked outside - cant shift. when hit the knob down it sifts. Weird did not do it a single time from May till last week. Guessing im going to be doing this job today

E class w210 has an over-ride hole (just use a pencil near the bottom of D selector and stated in the manual. :)

I forgot to remove the key from the ignition before disassembling it all. What do I do now? The key is stuck in the ignition.

How did you remove the lower storage tray?? It’s obvious that the mechanics didn’t remove it. Most of the connector weren’t reconnected and it appears they broke at least four wires. So I would like to know how to remove the lower tray without using a hammer.

Sorry, I'm not sure I know which storage tray you're talking about. If you're referencing the one in the console that is closest to the front of the vehicle (forward the shifter), I did not have to remove that one to gain access to the shifter. However, as noted in the video, it could have been removed by a torx wrench from underneath once the console was loose.

THE PLATIC RETRACTABLE PEICE FELL INTO MY SHIFTR FROM GETTING WORN OUT. NOW THRE IS A GAP AND I CAN SEE INSIDE TH SHIFTER. hOW DO I GET THIS RETRRACTABLE PLATIC THAT FOLLOWS TH SHIFTER COVERING THE GAP OUT?

Rolandesq it is possible to remove the shifter lever then i will re install the shifter back to my transmision. Can i drive my car in normal?

I did not replace the part and returned the shifter back into place without it. The lever is a safety feature to prevent the shifter from accidentally being knocked into drive. I never had a problem with driving normally after this repair.

my car was working properly until I began this task. I got to step 4 and every time I put the key in the ignition it would flash several quick flashes on my dash and headlights and then flash REMOVE KEY NOW. I lost all power including function of remote. I put everything back together, no luck... I assure you I did everything exact with the assistance of my I pad... I have looked in my manual and cant find a reason and called dealership but they wont give me free advice.

How do you force the lock pin out ?

There should be a small amount of play in the shifter even when in the locked position. What I did was to keep moving the shifter until the lock pin moved just enough to enable the allen wrench to fit into the bolt for removal. I don't think you will be able to force the lock pin fully out without seriously damaging something else in the process.

Yes, it is part of the safety design to keep the shifter from accidentally being knocked into drive. When the plastic piece inside breaks (ie, the part that the video ultimately shows replacement) it prevents the locking pin from being released, leaving the car stuck in park.

I suppose it depends on how you define safe. Removing the plastic part without replacing it with a new one, or an upgraded aluminum one like in the link I provided in the description, will not affect the driveability of the vehicle. It will operate as it always has. However, if you have a tendency to leave children or pets in the vehicle while it is in park with the engine on, then omitting the part is probably not a good idea, as the shifter can easily be knocked into drive accidentally. I drove the car for years without the part (I finally got rid of the car when the airmatic suspension died and the car literally dropped to the ground.)

I was able to get to the part without taking the shifter out and taking it apart but I decided not to replace the plastic lock piece mine now freely goes into gear without engaging the break. Btw mine happened after I went to the dealership to get warranty work done and think they were Pissed everything was covered like 8 grand worth of work..I think they broke the piece on purpose by trying to put in gear roughly without pressing the break. .

I had this problem. I followed these instructions. It took me 3 hours. I removed that stupid black broken part with some needle nose pliers. I put it all back together. Result...I saved $1,300.

Unfortunately I'm not a mercedes mechanic - just a DIY-er with some decent skills. I don't know what may have caused your issue unless you missed the part about the key removal. In that case, if you tampered with the ignition while doing the repair I had read somewhere that it will affect the computer and then the car has to be taken to the shop. Might want to check the wires as well. When I removed the panels the wire sheathing got caught and stripped a little.

I did leave key in and got that message. Crap...the key wouldn't come out at first until I got everything put back right. So do i have to take it to the Mercedes Benz dealer or can anyone reset it? Thanks for your advice btw

John Merkel Usually only the dealer has the machine to reset things. The only time I have ever taken mine in was when my ignition itself went bad. I researched for days and even though I found a place to buy the parts there was no way to reset without the special machine that the dealer has. And of course purchasing the machine is way too costly. Sometimes when I'm working on things I'll get a shitload of codes. You might want to try disconnecting the battery, waiting a few minutes and then reconnecting. Oftentimes this works for me to clear any errors, but not always.
