There are times that cast iron radiators need to be taken apart for repair, transportation or reduction in size. We will take a look at splitting the radiator apart after removing the threaded rod.

So glad I found your video! I didn't think it was possible to split my old radiators. Now we can move, sandblast, and paint them. Thanks very much for showing your technique.

Thank you. Great video. I am re modeling a room where I will be swapping out a short long radiator for a tall short one, and I may need to modify the length on a radiator I get off Craigslist or Facebook marketplace.

Thanks for the video! The last part was a bit too dark to see the alternator you were referring to. Maybe you can do a followup video with a flashlight? Lastly, how do you re-assemble them afterward?

I'm about to take on this task, so thank you so much for posting! Can you tell me where you bought those wedges, or what type of steel wedges they are?

Great video, thank you. What is the process for reassembling them? Any special sealants or methods to keep them from leaking? Thanks again.

I have taken apart my radiator to remove a section which froze and split the one section. The radiator sections came apart easily using the wedges as you suggested. However... the collars did not seperate the way I needed them to. I have to remove one of the collars. Do you have any suggestions on how to remove one of the ring collars without destroying it as I will need it to reassemble the radiator. Thanks for the great video.

I know this is 3yrs late but... Got mine apart today & it was fairly easy. I had to remove the individual fin, and hammer the collar out from the opposite side. I used 5in x 3/8 bolt & put the head against the lip of the collar striking the threaded end. Go around the collar tapping as you go to keep it even & from being misshaped & dented up. Some are stuck worse than others so be patient if it doesn't come right out after the first trip around

What about removing the Threaded Rod??? :O I'm working on the "bolts" at one end, but not sure if that's all I need to do.

Yes loosen the threaded rods remove and give it a try.

Does this work on my steam boiler?
@themrhelperguy7 жыл бұрын
the radiator depends on whether it has all thread or threaded connectors. Not if it's steam or not. many boiler radiators are steam or hydronic depending on the set up. if you are asking to take the boiler heat exchanger apart yes this will do it.

Hey Helper! You ever epoxy a leaker back together....and have it worked to go back to hearing... heat off in my new house for a couple of years and I have three leakers!!!!!!
@themrhelperguy7 жыл бұрын
I thought about doing it but what if it doesent hold 2 years from now. I would not trust it. Radiater expand and contract to much. I wanted to try and braze on but haven't yet.

yes there is a putty made for jobs like this you can buy it at lowes or home depot , its called JB Weld ive used it on my solid hot water cast iron radiator and so far about 6 years now !

please do another video that is clearer in video and voice hard to understand you , and how do you get the collars out without destroying them ? because the collars must be cleaned before reassembling the sections ! What tool do you use ?
@themrhelperguy4 жыл бұрын
When I get the chance I certainly will.

you do this to repair it? then put it back together?
@themrhelperguy9 жыл бұрын
+boguscharlie yes you can remove a split section that is leaking. It can be taken apart to transport. You can reduce the size of a radiator. I did a couple vids on putting rads bak together. This is how I get them apart after the bolted rod comes out
@georgejudd13052 жыл бұрын
Does each one come apart

Yes each section can be separated.

Two Problems with this video: The narrator either can't speak clearly or the audio is terrible. I would over dub the audio if it were mine . ALSO ... this shows how to take them apart but does not explain how to put them back together . That's a bit of a problem, no? 😳
