I have been rear ended to many times and my hitch saved my trucks body. I’ll just keep my hitch on

i just leave my hitches in the receiver with a lock. adds a level of protection against drivers on there phones anyhow.

Very nice to have everything you need to fabricate something like that. I just leave my hitch on for those that can't stay off there phones

I just leave it on the truck... saves my truck from airhead people parking

Cool idea. Even though its hidden, I'd suggest a way of locking it you know... because of people, plus that might also keep it from flying out or rattling when on a real bumpy road or trail. I like leaving my hitch on only to help knock out the radiators of tailgaters.

A couple of after thoughts, you could store the hitch pin and it's locking pin inside the draw bar, used a small can of spray on bed liner paint to match the bed, and added a fence slide bolt and lock to secure it from theft. Great project, gets an A+ in my book.👍

I dig it it’s really cool. I carry 3 all the time, they roll around on the floor of the cab. This gave me the idea to do something similar. I’ve a flat bed so I’m going to do the same with the 2” tubing but drill the 5/8 hole an slide it in then use a locking hitch pin to keep it secure from wandering hands while out and about. I’ll let you know how it turns out. Great idea!

I love that you created this, trucks should have that option, I use a B&W hitch and the ball mounts in reverse when not in use, but I'd rather have it inside when not in use.

I like the holster, I use to leave mine in all the time on my last truck but needed to use a different size and the hitch was rusted in from the rain/snow/salt and dirt here....

Good idea for those type hitches. I have a equalizer type and just leave it in the receiver. Figured if rear ended it's just that much more between them and me.

You should invest in a jaw horse as another shop tool. They come in very handy. Nice job on the hitch holder. Very ingenious.

My truck is a 1985 Square Body Suburban. as rare as these trucks are becoming, i keep my hitch installed at all times. i have a large RV style hitch even though i dont pull an RV. the size of the hitch protects my truck from being damaged as easily in rear end collisions. ive never hit anyone, but ive been rear ended 4 times so far... so nice idea, but i like my hitch where it is.

I’m another person who just leaves mine installed in the receiver. Was waiting to turn left into a driveway and a person not paying attention slammed into me with their sedan. Their car busted the grill and blew the radiator and my poor hitch only got silver paint on it lol. Ever since then my truck ALWAYS has the hitch installed into the receiver

My dad’s had one for years. He made it himself when I was a kid.

It's a good idea and well executed. I wouldn't do it though. I use those tie down points often. And it wouldn't fit my equalizer hitch.

Pin the hitch to the bracket and use the hitch ball for a tie down point.

I welded mine under the receiver end with no hitch it looks like 2 receivers its welded further in under out of the way I use the hole and pin. It's easy access and right there out of the way lol

I use the same style Hitch, but maybe another inch or so of drop. My ball is on the other side that you have yours mounted. I always keep the Hitch mounted to the truck so it sticks up high. It makes a great Shin Buster. till you learn it`s there...LOL As others have said, let the guy in back kiss your Hitch. I have a 2 5/16 ball on mine for my 22ft car trailer, and pulled with my 86 F-250 6.9 Diesel. Always fun to watch the guy behind me launch it when the light turn green, then sudden nose dive, as Iam shifting through the gears. Drill out the hole in the Hitch Pin, and use a Master lock so the Hitch doesn`t get stolen. Been on the truck for the past 10.5 years, and all kinds of crap thrown at it during the winters. Always works, throw some kroil in it from time to time. I agree if you like it mounted in the bed, make a way to securely lock it in place so some one doesn`t lift it on you. Something to think about when you park to get a bite to eat...etc... Some one can pull your Hitch Pin, when you drive off the Trailer can pull the Hitch out of the reciever. Always check things before driving off. Another good reason to drill and use a Master pad Lock. Be Safe.

cool idea. sorry if someone said this already i didnt read all of the comments. you could use a little foam tape on the bottom to keep noise down from the metal on metal vibration. also if to put the cotter pin in the lock pin you could use the metal ring you welded as a tie down point. also i would look into a way to lock the hitch to the bed so its not stolen.

Ive got two trailers and both have storage boxes on the front that holds a battery, straps, etc.... I just toss the hitch in as each trailer uses a different drop. If I’m towing something else, I just grab it and leave it in until I’m done.

Should've used a couple of spacers so you didn't have to cut the extra metal off the top of the hitch.

That holder is a Great idea, why not put the hitch cotter pin through the hitch pin to keep it from bouncing out of the holder, just a thought.

Good idea but I would weld one end of a chain on its side facing the front of the truck between the tops of the pipes. Then run the chain up and around the hitch back down to the welded end you could install a lock to keep the hitch from walking off!

Good idea But a suggestion would be to space it off the rear so you could not have to cut the top off. An put another square on bottom so you could put the tie down Mount back on just incase it was needed.

One possible upgrade. A u-bolt that locks it in place. The up tailgate locks it all in place. When the tailgate is down the u-bolt can toolessly slide out. This could only work if you're in the habit of locking your tailgate.

Great job and idea, would be nice to make it were you can put a lock on it. In Arizona that hitch would be gone in about a week.

Thats good, make it sasier for some thief to steal your hitch assembly. Should have a locking mechanism of some kind

I have a 93 F150 and I put my trailer hitch in backwards until I need to use it and I pulled the pin turn it back around where it sticks out to connect to trailer

Nice package! I would consider adding some sort of latch/lock to keep the hitch secure from greedy pinkie fingers and from being ejected in a crash impact. That puppy has a lot of mass which can do some serious damage if it comes free and gets ejected. You might be surprised at the energy transfer involved in a crash.

I like to keep my hitch on so that if someone runs into the back of me, it it's the hitch not my bumper. Has saved a repair or two here and there.

you "metal pieces" are Square tubing & round tubing. nice video. Ya should've put some spacers behind that holder to bring it out away from the mounting holes. That way ya wouldnt have to use your hand grinder & cutoff wheel to cut off the top section of the hitch like ya did. Take care

Years ago my boss Ralph was giving/selling some old car parts to his friend Frank who had a Jeep pick up, and had left the ball mount in the receiver. At some point Ralph walked into the hitch, uttered a few choice words, and told Frank what he should do with his hitch. Frank just laughed at him. Ten minutes later Frank was not laughing when he walked into the hitch himself. My own negative experience with someone leaving the mount in the receiver was merely annoying, not painful. My neighbor had parked his SUV on the street in front of my van. When he started up, it rolled backwards, and the ball mount left a nice little dent in my front bumper. I’m not sure if he was just a jerk or if he didn’t realize he had hit my van but he never apologized for it. It really did not affect the value of the van. It was a work van and wound up at the junkyard after 18 years of use.

No reason to lose the tie down or modify the hitch. Simply stack another piece of the plate on the back of the tubing to create clearance.

I leave mine in too with regular pin not locked never had anyone mess with it but my dad has to remove his. His garage is just short enough that truck fits but hitch sticks out where garage door will come down on it. Just sharing another legit reason to remove the hitch.

Great idea, out of sight out of mind. You can't steal what you can't see is my motto. I know people will say, " buy a locking pin". Thieves have already found ways to defeat them since they are cheaply made, don't waste the money!

Wow im so lucky. My trk came with a hitch holder. Its called the reciever. Lol. Its extra protection for if get rear ended. Of coarse i keep my hitch at the ready. That cant work for me as my main hitch is a pintle for big trl

I thought the point of the cross brace was to keep the hitch from making contact on the bed floor but it looks like the sharp end is making contact with the bed. Great idea though.

I usually leave mine under my rear seat in my Silverado. Out of sight, out of mind. Btw, I had mine on my truck and an early 2000’s Camaro rear ended me. The hitch went into the grille. The joke was, I went fishing and hooked a bass. Those Camaro front ends looks like a big mouth bass. LOL

Cool idea. Question though, doesn't the end of the hitch still poke into the bed? it looks like the angle gusset you put on the bottom doesn't stop in like you mentioned you were adding it to do? Maybe it does and just can't tell from the camera angle?

Actually called a ball mount. The hitch is the part connected to the frame and has the receiver.

If it hasn't been stated.. why not incorporate the hitch pin into the securing into place. Especially if you have a keyed hitch pin, this way it deters theft.

Modify the hitch pocket to zip over the hitch while it’s in the holder so people can’t see it.

Does your hitch sit in truck Ed. It has an angle to it and it misses your bottom plate

Should of lined it up so the pin could go in it while it’s in the holder. Cause it could wobble around and possibly even bounce out.

I’d be worried about someone needing that hitch more then me and just stealing it from the inside of the bed if the hitch can’t be locked up. But it looks like you have a bed cover so you’ll probably be ok as long as it’s down.

ok idea but it needs a way to secure the hitch so it doesn't shrapnel in an accident and to stop someone from walking off with in the Wal-Mart parking lot, or even using in to break into your truck.

Whatever happened to a piece of bailing wire to tie it to the lower tie down loop? Let us see, #1 need lots of steel, #2 need electric 4" grinder to cut plate, #3 needed mig welder, #4 need electric drill and bits, #5 need tap and die set, #6 need at least 2 screws or bolts, #7 needed special paint to keep from rusting.....lol. bailing wire method,,,need roll of bailing wire, #2 need a wire cutter....done.
