For those who do prongs, I think you will simply get this by watching it. For those who are new to prongs and/or wire wrap and need/want/enjoy my voice instruction... give me a couple of days. I'm going to do more of these for us, I had some difficulty with my mic on this one, so I covered up with soft music. Tools and Materials are in the first 10 seconds of the video.
NOTE:
So... I got these new fancy digital and heavy calipers... I didn't read the owner's manual and just 'used' them for this piece... I didn't use them correctly either! A lovely viewer pointed that out and so I do the same here... don't use your digital calipers the way I did. Read your manual first! hahahahaha!! Have fun, we all learn somewhere.
I am using a round, faceted glass gemstone, about 7.5mm round and about 3.5mm deep.
I am using 22 inches of 22 gauge, round, soft copper wires for this size 6 ring.
If you want to just practice the prong capture and not go all the way with the ring yet, use 12 inches of 22g round copper wire to just practice making the prongs at the middle and doing a partial set on the stone.
I still want to share so much of this mid-wire prong setting with you! Just like all my other Midway Station wraps, you can do 1001 things when you set your tiny stone in the middle of the wire first.
Please subscribe to my channel and activate the Bell to be notified when I post new wire-wrapping tutorials. I'll give us a talkie tutorial tomorrow on this gorgeous prong ring setting!
Ideas...
birthstone rings!
promise rings!
I hope you enjoy the peaceful video... I left it in real time for you.
Many thanks!

You make it look easy, but I can tell there's a lot of finessing and fine tuning. I'm going to give it a try, but I'm not sure I've got that kind of patience. Definitely a Stunner!!! Thank you for sharing with us!!!

A beautiful design and excellent tutorial. I must however, point out that you are using the wrong part of your calipers to measure your gemstone. That recess is to make sure the calipers close all the way if you get dirt or build up on the sliding components. The correct part is the longer flats from the middle to the end. I know this as I have a metalworking trade. Keep up the good work, love your stuff.

Thanks Pia! I just got these and they are so much more fancy than I'm used to. I've had the manual little Gold calipers forever... I guess I should read the owners manual on this thing! 😄🤣🙃 thanks for pointing it out, I kinda figured I wasn't doing it right as gemstones didn't measure up. 🤣🤣🤣 I appreciate your comment, we all learn somewhere.

Beautiful design, I'm just wondering if you are using the copper as a "teaching wire", a sample design. I am concerned that copper wire will not be strong enough to maintain tension on a stone for if one of those prongs were to snag on clothing .......
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry Жыл бұрын
Copper can be used for practice but the metal makes a gorgeous ring as well as other jewelry. The hardness of the wire has to do with it's tensile strength and not necessarily it's type. Also, when you start with soft metal (like this copper is Dead Soft Copper, rather than Half Hard or Hard Copper).... and you work it into tight turns and pinches like prongs, the metal 'work hardens'... so while they can snag and can pull out of form, they might not, depending on how you work them and the wire. This is a simple ring with no curls, so you could also start with Half Hard or Hard wire if you have it or feel more comfortable with that... same would be true if working Sterling... start with a harder wire, but it will work the hands a bit more for sure. These would not be the setting or the wire I'd use to set a very fine gemstone, no... I would do the setting in a more secure or harder wire if the gemstone were very valuable. It's a great question you asked! Thanks again, Carla!

You need a bend for the girdle of the stone it would make it so much more secure
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for that input! This ring design is a very simple and basic prong design, not intended for high value stones, but I do like your idea for a bend! Thanks again.

Also half hard wire make such a difference when securing stones with dead soft if you bump the ring or the stone it will come loose and fall out
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry 4 ай бұрын
Half hard works too, but I've never had a stone fall out of my prongs. When the soft wire is compressed, it work hardens, in addition, if you burnish the prongs, they harden further. Starting with half hard might be faster for a simple prong ring without curls. Thanks for your comment!

thankyou for sharing. but can i ask you, what if i dont have flat head pliers? is there any tips to replace it?
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry 10 ай бұрын
You can use Round Nose pliers too, but honestly, it will be harder for you. You can use the Round Nose to make the valley between the prongs but then you still have to use something like a Chain Nose plier to flatten them. I hope that helps! You can find flat pliers at the hobby stores probably and also online Marketplaces. Thanks for watching!

Is there a formula for the number of prongs to make for gemstone size? For instance, you made 6 prongs for an 8mm stone. Would you use 4 prongs for a 6 mm stone?
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry
@PerfectlyTwistedJewelry Жыл бұрын
There is not really a formula that I know of it's more Due to the size of the plier or my stone. 4 prongs on 6mm works great.
@buzzgreen20

so I am still trying to figure out the golden ratio of stone length and width and height as to too how far to space the prongs and what relationship they should represent as to overall dimensions as a general rule, I've not seen anyone accurately describe it, can you?

... Hi Bill... while I think I give a pretty good way to measure for prongs in the first part of Oly!... there is no formula that I know of. Thanks and best of luck, Hope this helps. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/isiemppoy8jSnGQ.htmlsi=kSevunQD-hI6y29q

The video shows someone measuring the stone with calipers but they did not use the proper surfaces on the calipers so the stone measured smaller than it actually is in size.
