If you get hot plastic on you, rub your fingers together right away. It balls up the plastic, and keeps all the heat from burning that one spot... same with hot glue.

Works great! About a month ago I made one of these and stuck it in my container pond. For 3 weeks nothing happened. The K1 media trapped air bubbles and just floated at the top of the bottle. I'd shake it every now and then to release the trapped air only for the media to trap more air and float unmoving. About a week ago I noticed some of the media at the bottom of the pile becoming fluidized. Hope sparked. This morning I woke to find all of the media tumbling just like it is supposed to! So easy to make! Really excited for more nitrifying bacteria to develop! Thanks Cory!

@MakoyUnggoy
@MakoyUnggoy Жыл бұрын
@@raisinggoldfishonabudget7058 The commercial breeders use this method but the fluidized containers wouldn't be the same as this home made bottle option. If you used this in your own pond then a simple sponge in the bottom would cover the holes and prevent unwated eggs/fry hopefully finding their way inside!

I found that squeezing the bottle a few times once it's underwater and running will help push out any air bubbles trapped in the media and help the k1 begin tumbling faster.

This is so cool! I am so new to the hobby that I have to research this type of filter / uses and pros and cons compared with sponge filter plus airstone or HOB, but I nerd out on DIY and love to learn new things. Hey Cory I love the video as usual man! I use DIY K1 media fluidized filters in some of my tanks as well, and I find making the hole that you insert your airline into smaller than the rest and wedging the tubing through that hole with no air stone allows the media to fluidize better initially.
@AquariumCoop
@AquariumCoop 8 жыл бұрын
+SevernRunAquatics I should have mentioned that. I find the never clogs don't restrict flow so I get the full flow out of them but you're correct that a larger bubble may help get things started moving more.

Cool follow up to the new filter you are offering for sale! If you use this or the professional one in a sump what will this provide that the sump is not already doing? I am thinking of making a smaller version of what you made for your big tank at your house. Filter pads then under gravel filters with bio media on top. The a heater and then the pump back to the tank.

Great vid. I may try to replace some of my sponge filters with these. Really don't like the maintenance required on sponge filters. What kind of magnet is that attached to the water bottle & where is it sold? It occurs to me that if it's strong enough you could attach the filter to the side of the aquarium to leave the bottom clear.

Hey, Im currently planning on making my current aqurium "filter themed" in the sence that, just like a showcase, it will have various filtration and I was wondering if there is a problem with having loads of filtrartion. Is there really to much of a good thing?
@MrDanAng1
@MrDanAng1 5 жыл бұрын
Squidgy animation The only problem it might cause is high flow in the tank, which is a problem for some fishes. If you select fishes from high flow environments, you can circumvent that problem. Otherwise, filtration beyond a certain point is just expensive and/or redundant, it's not dangerous or detrimental for the inhabitants of the tank.

Bio filters will only grow to the extent they are "fed" by waste products. He could drop that filter in a tank of distilled water with no fish or animals in it and it would look the same a year from now.

Would this work in a half liter bottle? I'm running on an Eheim starterkit spongefilter now, and I dont like it - It creates too much flow. But I'm thinking to build one of these and put them on a timer so during the day it will be just bubbles and eventually filter and night it is silent - while also running the spongefilter untill the new one is well-cycled. Its a planted 54L tank with shrimp, snails and guppys (because of you 😍).

The heavier media will not tumble as it's supposed to when bacteria has attached itself to it, the media will all end up staying near the bottom of the bottle as opposed to fully circluating, that's why the k1 is used, because of it's neautral boyancy

Corey, I see a sponge filter in that tank that has no air flow to it. When you run these K1 filters are they the only filtration on a tank or do you use them in combination with a sponge (or other) filter? If the aesthetics are a concern, do you ever think of maybe trying to hide the bottle in something like a black acrylic tube thats full of holes? Or do you think a combination of this and a quasi HMF filter might work? Maybe hide this bottle behind a corner filter of poret foam?
@AquariumCoop
@AquariumCoop 8 жыл бұрын
+Rich's Fishes Well in this video, some of the sponges are intake sponges that were just dropped into the tanks to help seed them faster as I dropped 300 cichlids in each of those tanks. As for hiding it, sure you could dress these up quite a bit, or put them in sumps. But for my fish room I don't bother. I think the simplicity of them and their cheap cost is the lure. By the time you buy acrylic and make something, perhaps there was a better mouse trap to build anyways.

Hi Joel, there are 3 types of filtration, biological, chemical and mechanical. This filter is biological only. There is always some debate on chemical (carbon.......) and mechanical to take the particles out of the water. I use foam filters for the mechanical and biological, but this filter looks like a great idea.
