After one too many close calls using an axe to split kindling, I decided to try and make something a little safer. If you're wondering about that Chopper1 axe head I used for this build, here's a link to their website (I'm not affiliated with them in any way shape or form): chopper1axe.com/
Here's an amazon affiliate link to the Krylon paint I used: amzn.to/2Byd4oW I wasn't compensated to use this paint or make the video by Amazon or Krylon, but if you do end up buying something off Amazon through my link my channel will get a small commission from amazon - no extra cost to you the buyer. You can probably get the paint cheaper locally, but at least you can look at it on Amazon easily through the link above. I've been using it for a few years now on bare metal projects that I really don't want to go through the hassle of doing primer and then paint. It's worked really well for those kinds of projects where I just want to get bare metal covered so it doesn't rust. I still prep the metal and clean with acetone, but the paint has been good for me.

I definitely need to make this for my dad. His house is heated by woodstove, and it gets scary to almost lose a finger when making kindling. This tool will be very useful.

It's been a couple years now and this thing has just been great. I glued some rubber feet to it so I can use it right on the concrete in my shop and in just a couple of minutes I can make enough kindling to light fires in my shop woodstove for the whole month.

The splitter you showed at the beginning is the one I sent for but only afterwards did I look closer at the advert only to find it is an ORNAMENTAL Device only, it seems it is cast iron and not to be used for actually splitting anything. Never mind , I will construct one for myself and use a piece of good quality steel for the blade that will keep its edge.

I just took an axe and put it in a drill press vise blade up and set it on a round. No welding equipment needed. Axe and vise can still be used for other things.

Loved watching this. But since I don't have any of the power tools, welder or sandblaster you have, I bought my Kindling Cracker from Northern Tools on sale for $59.00. But thanks for the video. Going to watch some of your other videos now.

Nice, love the 💡 although, when we buy say 1 cord of wood, you think building a bigger one would take the original size of a half log or quarter log about 12 to 16 inches long work.And an idea added maybe have welded ear on it to bolt it down for stability..love this, great video well explained, tx for sharing 😀

We burn wood for supplemental heat most of the winter. It only takes a few sticks of kindling to get each fire started so we've only had to use the kindling splitter about once a year to make a pile of kindling that will get us through the winter. We have a 37 ton hydraulic log splitter to take care of the big rounds. I actually put some rubber pads on the bottom of the kindling splitter to keep it from walking around. I like your idea of welding a tab to it to bolt it down, but portability has proven to be a pretty nice features. We just throw it in the back of the trailer when we go camping. I'm not sure it would work in a scaled up size as a hand tool. The larger wood pieces would need an equally larger amount of force from the hammer end to get them to split. This seems to work really well on pieces that are too small to stand up on their own after you split the log with an axe. That's kind of the rule of thumb with this thing; I'll split a log until I have pieces that are too small to stand on their own and then I'll have the kids make those pieces into kindling. We get a little assembly line going like that and we can make a lot of kindling in a short amount of time. If you want to make enormous amounts of kindling there are hydraulic splitters that have multiple blades that can turn a round into multiple pieces, not just split it in half. That might be the way to go for making huge quantities of kindling. But like I said before, we can make a season's worth of kindling in about an hour with three of us doing a little assembly line.

Ah, I see your use for it now, portability. For me, it would work at the same spot always. I like the idea of 2x blades..tx for the insightful info.take care 😀

Extremely nice. Make the next one a little taller your hand is way too close to the blade.
@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 4 жыл бұрын
I wondered/worried about that when I built it, but after using it for a year, what we've found is that your hand never even gets close. When the hammer hits the wood, it drives it down and past your hand. You would have to hold the wood tight enough to carry your hand down with the wood to the blade, and that would take a LOT of grip strength when you're hitting the wood with a small sledge (body in motion, body at rest...etc.) Beyond that, the upper frame keeps the hand from going down. I was more worried about whacking my wrist on the frame, but I've never once hit my wrist or hand on the frame hard enough for me to take notice. The design really turned out to work quite well. My kids use it as a team with one holding the wood and the other using the tiny sledge. They've split a TON of kindling in the last year and not one mishap. It looks dangerous AF, but in practice it's been just about perfect... I was originally going to make a top plate with a hole just big enough for certain size pieces to be lowered in or even supported, but after using it for this long, I've found there's just no need.

Looks good but, dude, there's nothing cheap or free about this. Metal is expensive. So is all the specialized equipment you used to build it. And not everybody happens to have an old ax head laying around. And then there's the hours to do it. If it works for you, great. But for most people, it's more practical to just get one at the store. I got one at Canadian Tire the other day. Mounted it. Works great.
