How to make a DIY Lightweight Foldable Sketch Board for Plein Air Painting, Nature Journaling, & Urban Sketching. See my previous videos for more Plein Air Painting Tips.
This sketch board is made from a 9x12 piece of foam backing board for mounting picture mats.
Clear packing tape to make your board waterproof.
Score it down the center and press tape into the crease.
Hold board open with clips on the crease.

Here is a link to the foam core boards that I use to make my sketch boards. But you can use any size or brand of foam core boards with the similar results. Foam presentation boards will also work if you cut them to the size you need.

I’ve used this idea for a while. I used plastic corrugated sign board. A modification to your design is to cut a 1” wide gap at the bottom middle about 3” up. This allows you to put the spine of the sketchbook with the outer front and back of the sketchbook behind the board and the pages of the sketchbook to be on the top of the board. That way the sketchbook helps hold the board. Clamps on the sketchbook help hola it all together. The rest is just as you show it ( paints and water cups).

Just made mine from old foam board found in back of closet, fits perfectly in my Kanken backpack. Am heading out to the beach to test-sketch momentarily ;) I really appreciate your breaking it down into simple steps. Thx so much and hope things are great in your world.

I did something similar only I used magnets since my mini palette is a metal tin. I can fit my whole kit in my purse. Thanks for sharing yours.

I love your all of your videos! Have you tried cutting out a notch on either side of the fold, to use like a Stablo easel? You could also cut out a place to insert a collapsible cup.

I love this and the other ideas you play with for your kits thank you for sharing. I've been planning to make a leather bag for my kit. Right now I use the Maxpedition Fatty Pouch. Love your accent too by the way. No disrespect intended.

Thank you so much for your lovely comments! I have a few other bags for different occasions. One is a small shoulder bag that can be used fanny pack as well. I like having my arms free when I'm walking in the woods. I'm from Kentucky, but I live across the line in Virginia now.

@@kimberlyhyltonart Good stuff all over the place. As a leather worker I have a desire to make something but I am also a structural designer who makes things out of corrugated on CAD. Your inventions are inspiring me to look that way too. I’ll look you up if I come up with something with fun folds and panels for the to go times.

I forget the proper name for it, but the material I use is plastic made like cardboard; it can be purchased in hardware stores, but is also used for temporary signs, so can be had for free.

💥 SMART GIRL‼️ The board would be a bit more stable/secure, if you used the opposite side… (use the back of it as the front, with the scored/cut side up.) Turn the board upside down. - It’s just the dynamics of it. ▫️ But Dang! That’s brilliant‼️

Hi Sandra! Thank you! Yes this little water pot clips onto a thin board. I got this one from Jerry's Artarama, but they sell them on Amazon or just about any art store. This is a great idea. Have you used it much, and have you found many cons with it. I would really like to start painting Plein Air, and this looks easy to make and not a large investment.

Thank you! I use this set up all the time! Sometimes I change bags, sketchbooks and paint palettes according to where I am going and how light I want to travel. The sketch board is fantastic and I almost always use it when I am painting indoor or outside. I actually made multiple sizes to fix various sketchbooks or papers. I have some that fold that are mostly used for outdoor sketching. I also have some that are just the flat board wrapped in packing tape that I use to tape down my watercolor paper. I haven't found any cons with these boards, they are sturdy, cheap, lightweight, and easy to make. You can attach a small palette with magnets or velcro. Clips are also useful for attaching things. You should give it a try, it makes outdoor painting a lot easier. I have other videos with other sketch board ideas if you are interested.

Did you score the fold before or after the board was covered with tape?

Yes, I’m this case I had already taped the board before I scored it. But, it will work either way.

@amooseish Yes, I think a Guitar pick works great for scraping! I discovered this tip myself. I think that it is smoother than a plastic card and is more gentle on your paper. 🙂

What do you do with the white crayon?

I sometimes use the white crayon to act as a resist on watercolor paintings. If you put it on before you paint you can save white areas for highlights

What is size of sketch board. Is it approximately 10x12?

Hi Bonnie! 'm sorry that I forgot to mention the size of the sketch board. It is a 9x12 foam board (The kind that is a backboard to a picture mat). So when you score the board it will fold into a 6x9 board. I wrap clear shipping tape over it to make it waterproof. Use clips over the crease on both sides to support it when you want to have it opened to the full 9x12 size. I hope this helps. If you have any others questions I will be happy to help!

@@kimberlyhyltonart Thanks. Great idea for smaller sketch board and I like that it’s foldable. I’ll have to check to see what sizes it comes in. I’m wondering. Maybe it comes 9x12. Michael’s or Hobby Lobby maybe.

@@bonnieshapiro3511 thank you so much! I field tested sketch board the last I got to go outdoor painting. It worked out great! I was actually able to get my husband to help me film a little. I believe that I ordered the pack of the foam boards from Blick, if my memory is correct. I intended to use them to support my watercolors when I put them in a clear art bag to sell. But I discovered that they make great sketch boards by covering them with packing tape! I like to have them in different sizes to fit different size papers. If you have trouble finding the 9x12 you could always cut a bigger one to size with a box cutter and a ruler. Good luck and let me know if you try out!
