For a general DC motor you are actually increasing the power going through it by the square of the voltage, so multiplying the voltage by four, means 16 times the power (doesn't necesarily translate to 16x the speed though :P). Beyond that, I'm going to be a massive safety nanny: PLEASE for the love of everything cover up that ring on your finger when fiddling around with lithium ion cells (or any current capable source). Electrothermal ring burns are a thing and usually end up with an amputated finger.

When modifying an Electric Vehicle for more performance. Overvolting the original motors, is easy. What's a concern, is if the motors are overheating from the higher voltage. So to prevent the motors from overheating, which can melt/burn winding insulation, and demagnetize magnets it may use. You will need to limit the current, with something like a Cycle Analyst, or a programmable motor controller. And if you're using brushed motors, instead of Brushless, then you also need to worry about arcing. With electric motors. Higher voltage means higher top-speed and rate of acceleration. Setting higher current limits, means more torque, but you will drain the batteries quicker, and you will be more likely to damage the motor & battery from overheating. If using a bushed motor, you're limited by the voltage you can use, because arcing will become more of an issue. If using or switching to a Brushless motor & controller. Then not only can you use it in rain (with electrical connections sealed and packed with Dielectric Grease, so they too can handle moisture), but if you also control temperature with current limits, and maybe making a great cooling system. Then the only limitation to voltage, is the motor spinning so fast, that it starts damaging itself, from centrifugal forces, and the bearings may have issues too. But if you set your voltage or top-speed limit before that point, then you should be ok. And personally, I recommend making an Ultra-Capacitor pack, to wire in parallel with the batteries, to make things easier on the batteries. Like Brake-Regeneration, and the spike in load, when accelerating hard from a dead stop, especially when going uphill.

My dad did this to our trike in the late 80's (different batteries mind). Motors lasted surprisingly well as long as you stopped for a bit when they got too hot. He then replaced them with something better too at which point it wouldn't even move as the plastic wheels just slipped and spun on the spot. So he rubberised the wheels. Then it went so fast mum had to step in and have him dial it back before he could think of any way to make it even more dangerous for an 8 year old :)

We did this to my now 8yr old nephew's plastic riding jeep a few years back. We had to make a few other modifications to handle the new found torque. The plastic gears were not up to the task and had to be rebuilt, and the plastic drive wheels had zero traction on grass/dirt so we glued a wide accessory belt to the wheels, notched side out, as add on tires. The gears have been stripped out again and will need repairing, but my nephew still loves driving it even though he has had it for a few years now. God knows how much longer it will last as its really taken a beating.

You could have at least also spent like $2 on a set of XT60 connectors, surely? Or maybe its bigger XT90 brother. Your soldering technique was mostly fine, though. I wouldn't have soldered the terminals while those modular bits were connected to the batteries in case the heat from the soldering iron went through to the cells and damaged them, and you probably could have used a high-mass soldering iron, but the "Heat up the wire, then add solder to the wire" method is how you're actually supposed to solder stuff.

Just remember to find a specialized transformer/adapter when you have time after the project, so you can free up your variac for other future projects.

I first thought Linus is about to build his own lithium primary cells out of chemicals. XD

I built a 6 wheel drive powerwheels car using bits from 3 separate cars. Had to make a plywood chassis and set the body on top. Used a 12V battery and just 2 DPDT switches one for each side for control. Car was awesome and would spin like a skid steer with one one set of wheels going forward and one in reverse.

This confirms Linus is a cool dad.

What could go wrong? Well with Linus it's more like what will go right.
