How to make a 20 Foot Pole Saw
I cannot stress this enough - do not try this at home
Why don’t they make longer pole saws? All they would need to add is more poles… After falling off a ladder, I am not eager to leave the ground, so to bring down some tall branches, my options are limited. I took a 8 foot pole saw and made it a 21 feet long. When adding my reach, I can get branches that are 25-28 feet high.
Please do not try this at home, I am the Level 1 Builder

I see lots of advice in the comments… and here’s some more. Firstly… WELL DONE! You didn’t back down. You went for it! Every tree is different… but sometimes… with some planning… you can use a lower limb as a support for that long… tall… lanky handle you added… and pivot off the lower limb while you go to work cutting on a higher limb(s). Nice work cowboy!!!

I will be trying this tomorrow. Square tubing and duct tape, stay out of the way, wife on porch running the switch, ok, plugging and unplugging. Glad someone else does sketchy stuff. I am not to worried. Just barely out of reach of my harbor freight pole saw by just a little. Kids, don't do this at home.

Adding a counter-weight to the base of the pole might make it easier to get the pole vertical and back down again gently. I tried this with a 21ft mast that was 21 lbs all-up weight and roping the base to a concrete block made it easy to raise and lower single-handed.

@@level1builder261 While musing a bit more on this problem I spied the engine hoist in the back of my garage. I had been contemplating making an "A" frame to hold the mast up but the engine hoist (which weighs about 170 lbs) will give me a really stable point about 7ft off the ground from which to suspend the mast. With the mast/cutter counterweighted with a concrete block at the base I should be able to aim the saw with almost no effort - always my ambition 8-)=

I was going to buy a bunch of extensions for a Ryobi electric pole saw but after this I am going to just do this. I have a. 35 to 40 foot palm tree and have to make a 35 foot saw for this thing. I am going to put a strap around the tree and make it go around the pole saw because I am going straight up and down pretty much and will just let gravity do the work and the blade will fall through the palm tree grinds or branches. I have to circle the palm tree and just walk it around the tree and go up and down so to speak. I think 30 feet will do it and I might even design a circular contraption to go around the palm tree in the middle that you can brace the ladder onto and move it as you go. It will take the bounce out of the ladder that is stretched out so far it is not as stiff and will hold onto the tree for support by way of ladder. I wish I could rent something safer and quicker or be told a way to do this better

Try to get a cord up in tree hjgher than your work and use to raise, support and lower polesaw , then your just directing blade towards the work like a crane with less stress on your body. Will probably save some zip ties as well. Lol

There are commercially made pole saws up to 40', a 35' saw is about $550; hand saws on the long pole are about $180. Pro's cut off some of the limb to reduce weight and impact with stuff below (like house or fence), then they cut the main limb that needs to come down.

i would not try this at home because i used Metallic Emt 10-ft Conduit but considered Galvanized Steel Structural Pipe with a counter weight... the internal pipe connectors did not cut it at all, so i had to salvage a external steel bracket which i modified.... if you try any of this, be aware.... you can have heavy steel pipe or chain saw fall on your head.... keep your head on and call and vendor... Do not try this at home

I did the same thing with the same type of electric pole saw and extension. First I threw a rope with a pulley on the end up at the very top of the tree and tied it off. A second rope from the ground through the pulley and tied to the end up by the saw. Helps you raise and lower the saw into position and won't let the saw just drop after cutting through the branch. Worked great, but like you say don't try this at home.

I actually did this too, yes it is dangerous and i don't recommend it, but I will say this if you do want to attempt it, my case was believe it or not, it was safer then in this video, because I had two other people with me to help lift the saw up around 35 ft high, and another person to unplug the unit just in case that part is vary important, I eventually did break the pole saw in the process, but it got many heavy branches down In the process for around $140, I weighed the risk of getting hurt cutting the branches down vs having a branch fall on me whenever, or perhaps someone I care about or not care about and then have to face a lawsuit lol, the factors here are, peace of mind, risky, costly, you can only pick two of the three. for example costly and peace of mind equals call a tree service to do it for you, peace of mind and risky means improvise something like in the video...risky costly well that just = being dumb with your money.
