This girl reminds me of when I was 20 taking on simple projects and learning skills from library books. We didn't have the internet then. I'm 68 years old now and last year I tackled building a shed from scratch all by myself from leftover windows and building materials I gathered over the years when I used to do demolition work. Motto of the story: you never know what you can do till you start doing it. And "having to tear out or modify" is a great learning tool.

Sometimes doing it yourself costs more. If you consider how much she makes hourly over the time it took to do it, that alone may be more. Plus for many people you’d have to buy expensive power tools. And finally if you fuck it up and have to pay someone to do it,‘it’ll cost more for them to fix it. My dad works in contracting and often deals with it. The customer balks at the price then either hires a cheaper person or DIY. Then they call him back and his price goes up, if he’s even willing at all at that point, because it’s a lot more work to fix and undo the damage to now make it look like it should

@@NaraKwonPoD making your own clothes and buying good quality fabric will cost more than just buying it at hm because they are a major company who dont really pay their seamstresses at all etc. And you're more likely to mess it up. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Not the same as a closet obviously, but it relates (if you wanted one installed from some company for example) Also, how can just tearing all the DIY work out take so much effort? If the foundation is wonky youll just have to take it out and start over, no? Does your dad try to patch it up after the fact, hence the extra cost?

for everyone saying "i would pay the 5k" or "looks more expensive than the 5k" just remember that her building this herself is quite an accomplishment and is something she can be proud of every time she walks into her closet to pick an outfit. so what if it's just as expensive? she put in time and effort for something that she'll love and something she can be proud of. and it also gave her a learning experience for using new tools and building things, which will be very helpful in the future.

So much wrong here. It's more like knowledge learned, investment in tools that have more than one function, building character and work ethic, money saved on labor, and humbleness of a job well done cause you know you'll say " I did it myself, but I bet the pros could have done it better" knowing/hearing it looks amazing your first time doing it. As an avid DIYer I strongly recommend getting out there and doing it yourself. You'll appreciate it so much more at the end of the day. You’d actually be surprised how much cheaper it can be doing it yourself. When you go through other people or companies they don’t just charge you for materials but for the time they take to do it. My husband works on our house and most the materials he gets are free because he works for a construction company, he already has all the tools he needs and he gets our lights, and paints on sale and cheaper than full price. So it actually is a lot less than having other people do it. We do the same for our car parts, we get them brand new but cheaper than they would be going to a mechanic, and we switch them out and fix our own cars if we ever have anything that needs fixing.

I don’t think she was trying to say that it was not worth paying for. If anyone’s paying $5000 for a closet they deff don’t expect ikea furniture. @@syschinesubbie nowhere in this short is a budget even mentioned. You’re assumption that she DIYed based on budgetary reasons is just as sound as mine based on her thinking it was a gouge. I wasn’t criticizing her mistakes or even her choice to use IKEA cabinets for her closet. I’ve made far more mistakes than I care to count. I was simply pointing out that isn’t how we build custom walk in closets and why the $5200 is justified. Again, based on the assumption that she thought it was a gouge. I wish she mentioned cost of the project for transparency. Like yay new skills, but also the person that quoted her the original price already had the skills and was just quoting their price... exactly 😭 like… DIY is too generalized i think now… DIY is supposed to be like, entry level craft/carpentry stuff right? especially of you’re getting PAYED to do it for someone else. that kinda makes you a professional at that point.

Wtf does gender have to do with this?? "Just because you're a girl" makes no sense. At least learn to spell before making a backhanded nonsense comment. Yes, it is DIY - *Do It Yourself*

Probably not too far off from 5.2 k? If I'm honestly guessing Edit: Eh actually maybe more like 3 k but it does depend on how many people would have been making the closet because there is the material cost plus the cost of the labor and skills

Wonderful work! This project started out being about cost-savings but ended up providing you with: 1) a beautiful space 2) appreciation for the hard work & skill of custom builds 3) news skills and belief in yourself that you can tackle and achieve anything if you don't give up; 4) knowing you may have spent more in time, materials, and overall costs, but embracing that Nothing beats the Value of being Proud of Yourself for the determination that resulted in accomplishment. KUDOS & WELL DONE!!!!

Time will come no matter what…two months, three months, A YEAR..why not have something done at the end of that time. Someone told me that a long time ago when I felt overwhelmed about how long something would take. Even if it’s babysteps and in parts (think school, getting a degree, doing a diy) That closet looks professionally made🥰! Congratulations on this amazing achievement 🙌🏽

It is videos such as this that inspire thousands of women to try their hand at a DIY project. Congrats on a beautiful walk-in closet!! I love the idea of taping out everything you want to be part of the storage layout. I will do the same for my closet too. Thanks!! Could you share or give us an estimate of how much the materials cost you and how much you saved compared to the Professional Companies quote?
