This video shows you how to make a membrane reed instrument that I call 'Foonki'. The video starts off with showing a range of simple membrane reed instruments and leads up to making an F major FOONKI, complete with all measurements as a screen shot at the conclusion.

This is positively the top best video I have watched in the whole history of youtube, by far. Instructive, detailed, dense, funny, lovely, inviting, no waste of time with boring presentations nor self proclaimed erudition. This guy is a pathway to internet's salvation. Thank you Lindsey Pollak for being here

Rarely is an instructional video engaging and actually dense with information for the entire play length. This is one of those videos.

I love the tonality from those T-junction instruments! It sounds positively medieval, although they're entirely made from modern materials. Great that you're sharing your hard-won knowledge born from creative ideas and years of trial and error 👍

The chosen scale and melody plays a big role on that too. But yes. Can definitrly be applied to some medieval times music.

Thank you so much! My little cousin wanted to make his own flute and we wanted to learn how to make a simple reed with some PVC and tape (we bought balloons once we saw the video). He is so happy now! You made at least one kid smile =)

Some notes for anybody who wants to make this instrument: 1) For long-playing it's better to use an adjustable steel clamp with a soft sealing to fix the membrane; 2) The tone is VERY sensitive to the distance from the end of the pipe to the membrane, so the pipe connection must be really tight, but with the possibility to move it precisely. bonus: me playing membrane bagpipe kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kMeAl8WIuqrSo58.html

@Classic Max "how the end of the inner pipe aligns with the end of the tee" - yes, exactly. I use only plastic bag pieces as membranes.

@Classic Max About pitch: when you make any whistle/embouchure hole instrument we have an air column as the main resonating element, so all other circumstances have little effect, and calculators like Flutomat work well. But when we have any moving element - reed or membrane, the situation becomes much more complex and we can't expect the same behavior on column length change, because the properties of the membrane or reed have a serious and non-linear effect on the resonant frequency of the system as a whole.

I just 3D printed it as a screw-on cap, so with a reasonably fine thread pitch you can make very precise adjustments. Just remember to teflon the daylights out of the thread so it doesn't leak.

Perfect ! I was working on this low tech solution, watching among other videos the" Fils de Flute" channel and some of yours carrot clarinett ! I really get trouble to find a good way to calculate the distance between holes according to diameter, length and thickness of the tubes. Do you have an advice or smthg that can help me Linsey ?

Thank you so much, very clear instructions but giving me a lot of room to play around. I understand the parts I need. How does the relationship of the finger holes affect the sound. Like doe you tune then by their placement along the tube or on the diamanter of the hole itself

Is it possible to put a cap on top of the garbage bag membrane? So the flexible membrane is separating a sealed air pocket from and the tube with the holes? That might change how the membrane vibrates(possibly in bad ways) Like: ______ I I

I’ve modified your reed design for the foonki not sure where to contact you but. So I thought I’d comment on your foonki video. The modification I made ditches the t section for a straight section allows for a more wider range of instrument shapes. You may like it i made a foonki based off of this that’s a dragon foonki it’s on my ch if you want your vids are inspirational in that aspect and i thought I just had to modify your design. In one of your older videos you mentioned that your not sure how to put said membrane on a pipe without a t section well this may be the solution a working one at that If I could draw a digram using these and you can read it just let me know if not I may have to get all artsy with a pen and paper to draw out a blueprint for you. Here goes my attempt at explaining the double chamber separated by a wall with a membrane going over the edge of both chambers __ membrane Body/sound-- ; -- mouth piece Wall That’s the best I can do using dots dashes etcetera but it’s easy to read top piece is the membrane excetera a blueprint written using dots and dashes This is what I used this modified reed on kzfaq.infooHNYbfIbsfo?feature=share Still a while to go before completion though shouldn’t be to long now two or three days it is working however witch is the main point sounds ok to Edit the project was completed on the 6th nov 2022 videos up you may like the sound it produces here’s the link if you want to have a look at the sound and design you may like it it’s pretty unique 😂 Took me 7 days to complete due to the complexity of the design. kzfaq.infoQoy1LbXaQp4?feature=share My next one will be a manta ray foonki! Updated my ch with a video better explaining and showing the redesign of your foonki reed kzfaq.infoqYXBTQ16ju4?feature=share

Im having a hard time getting the right tension on the membrane, the low F keeps jumping all over the place (between Eb and G) and putting the instrument out of tune. Do you have any tips? Do you have any tips?
