Nice concept. To help filter the water of nitrogen, most aquarium enthusiasts will follow the general rule of thumb of 1-3 plants per fish. The same may be applied here. The more waste produced by the fish you use, the more plants that will be needed. To also help prevent root rot, consider a flood and drain system instead, by using a bell syphon instead of a stand pipe. This does mean that a third tank will be needed to serve as the sump tank to stop the water level of the fish tank from fluctuating.

A black moor cannot survive in a tank of that size, not to be rude or anything, i'm just a strong fish lover wanting to give input. If you keep the fish in that little tank, which is too small for a betta, its "insides" will grow, even as its body stunts due to the small tank, and eventually its body will be too small for its "insides" resulting in death. Love the aquaponics, super helpful, just looking out for the little fish too though.

Depends on the size of the system, and where you live. Right now in Australia we are going through yet another drought. The closed loop system I use, allows me to still grow my crops without having to rely on rain water, or be forced to abide by the current water restrictions. In areas where soil quality is poor, or growing seasons are limited, aquaponics is a good alternative.
@chevy6299

@@mathewpoole3589 you make some good points for having a system. Where I live water has never been a big issue but out west I can see were it is an issue and might help some people grow their veggies.
@mathewpoole3589
@mathewpoole3589 4 жыл бұрын
@@chevy6299 A suitably sized system could recoup its initial outlay in as little as 2-4 years. This isn't always the case for smaller systems though. There are some fairly decent small scale systems available, that while being incapable of producing relative yields, can cost as much or even less than what it would cost to setup an above ground planter in a titled courtyard. But you are right. If the aim is to grow only a few heads of lettuce a year, than aquaponics will cost far more than its worth.

I have an aquaponics of this scale and I have say (in my case) this statement is true. I have mine for 2 years now and I've used various media, water flow rates, number of fish and water supply methods. Up to this point ive found that hydroton(expanded clay pebbles) works best along with an auto syphon. I am struggling to grow plants by directly placing seeds in the grow bed, i must germinate them first in a sealed wet paper towel or soil and THEN plant them into my growbed. Ive tried various plants as well, Bassil dies almost instantly or it will grow very slowly, parsley seems to do ok and mint literally thrives in it. My uncle, who lives nearby, has a large system with a 1000L fish tank and a growbed area of around 8-10m2 with normal gravel instead of hydroton as the grow media and his system flourishes in almost total shade. So I do believe that bigger system works easier that micro systems and also, all the tips and instructions on large scale aquaponics forums does not seem to completely work with micro system. My plan is start a bigger system with a growbed area of atleast 1m2....

 Saartjie_69 for how much fish you have, what's your feed rate and the ratio of the feed rate to growing area? IIRC, it's 100g of feed per square meter of growing area. You might not be feeding the right amount to produce the correct amount of ammonia to be processed by the amount of growbed you have in such a small system. Have you tested your ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels?

@TheRealConMan98
@TheRealConMan98 4 ай бұрын
He’s got a 1:1 ratio of media to water volume, and with how porous the clay and rock is, it’s plenty of surface area. Depending on feeding/water changes/source water quality, he could probably support two mollies or similar sized fish.
@cryptocorner2253
@cryptocorner2253 4 ай бұрын
@@TheRealConMan98 Sure the filtration will work but it is still a small volume of water compared to the fish. Fish keepers would say even a betta would need at minimum 5 gallons of space. That poor fish doesn't get 2 gallons of space.
@TheRealConMan98
@TheRealConMan98 4 ай бұрын
@@cryptocorner2253 As an actual professional aquarist and water quality lab manager, that’s not true. Fish can thrive in smaller volumes with proper enrichment, life support systems, and maintenance. Is the average person getting a betta at petco going to provide those? Probably not, but if you know what you’re doing, you can maintain a ratio of 1 inch of body length per gallon of water, especially in an aquaponics system. Environmental quality is way more important than space when it comes to quality of life.

height of the pvc pipe within the clay media should be 2 inches below the top. so: height of pipe = total height - 2 inches. why 2 inch? 1 inch for splash guard (dont want a wet floor!) 1 inch for dry media/clay u will dump on top to keep the wet media from getting algae or mouldy or fungus or whatever. hope this helps!

Good unit to do some concept testing, but too small for reasonable results. Don't expect your fish to survive or be healthy in this small of a setup. That fish should be in at least a 10 Gallon tank to have enough space. you can bump up your aquaponics size.
@mathewpoole3589
@mathewpoole3589 4 жыл бұрын

@mathewpoole3589
@mathewpoole3589 4 жыл бұрын
@@BillTheTractorMan Can't say I know much about goldies. Bettas are more my thing. The shape and footprint of the tank matters more than the capacity size. A tall cylinder 10 gallon tank is just as bad as using a tank smaller than 2.5. While a shallow 5 gallon that holds only 6-8 inches of water is a far more suitable sized tank due to its width and depth, not so much its height. So with that said, if he is using a gold fish, depending on its size/age he will need to get a larger tank a some point. Otherwise, he'll be better using the same sized system with tetras or maybe even shrimp or something.

@@lookgoodfeelgoodmagick4173 The video author said he put a fish from his other (probably larger) tank in this tank as example of how it works. This fish was not a permanent resident of this tank. I saw this as more of a proof of concept than an actual plan on how to make a mini aquaponics system. If a person does the research on what species can happily live in a small tank and how to care for that creature, there isn't anything wrong with this method. Obviously one shouldn't try to keep a goldfish in such a tank, but -pond- bladder snails or ghost shrimp would likely thrive.

Algae will be a big problem with this design. Especially in your grow bed by the window and at the top level of the hydroton. You should think about painting the entire grow bed black and then having 1" of dry hydroton before the water level goes back down into the tank. Even more if the grow bed does not wick in oxygen by draining of nutrient solution completely.

Gotta be honest here... eating from a tank you’re putting fish food into is disgusting. It isn’t a closed system, you literally JUST said you’re *inputting food*. This looks cool, but is non-functional for the purposes of aquaponics, especially since the whole point is that the fish is doing the work, not you feeding it like you would some random aquarium. And if you think that fish food isn’t made with any chemicals you’re in for a rude awakening.
