My DIY Motion Rollers with Remote Adjustable Resistance.
Standard Nashbar Rollers with aluminum drums and the following modifications:
1. Motion platform base and sled with centering springs.
2. Safety wheels on the front drum to keep from riding off the rollers.
3. Deck in the middle to make mounting and dismounting easy.
4. Remote MTB shifter to manually control the magnetic resistance unit while riding.

Chad, thanks for the video. I have been trying to figure out a good way to create motion to my Krietler Rollers. And seeing the frames and track just made me think WTF didn't I think of that. Last thing I wanted to to was drill into my rollers as they don't set like all others. Hope you have a great New Year.

Good deal. Adding motion is really worth the effort gained in feel and standing comfort.

Genius! Would love to build that and use power pedals for Zwift

I just happened to stumble on this. I had built a similar base and chassis for my Kreitler Alloy rollers around the same time. I have found that I have been unable to get the nerve to stand on the rollers and I think it has something to do with the fact that the Kreitlers are 4 1/2in. rollers and narrower than most, being only 15 in. wide. Once inserted in the chassis the top of the Kreitler rollers are 8 1/2 in. above the basement floor, so the prospect of a fall is somewhat daunting. My build uses the bungee cords outside the chassis frame and I actually use 2 bungees on both ends. 1 bungee at each ends is sort of angled upward to help underweight the chassis wheels somewhat from the 1/2 pipe wheel tracks. Chad, I wonder with your interior bungee setup whether there is rubbing between the bungees as it looks to be in the video? Has this caused a problem? We have all experienced the jarring effect of a roller or resistance belt breaking, but I cant' imagine how it feels to have a bungee cord break in a freemotion build. Also, I have raised the angle of my Kreitler Killer Headwind fan unit, so that it clears the chassis and base and works in the freemotion build. Finally, I added rare earth magnets to the Kreitler frame in a slightly different orientation, by placing them close to the side disk surface of the full alloy rollers (this would not work with the Challenger model rollers). Hope these points help others and keep us all thinking of a "better rollers experience". Thanks for sharing your build, Chad.

Happy to have shared and thanks for the info on your build too :D Yeah, a taller and narrower setup like yours, and the vicinity of it to support (walls and such), could lead to some valid concerns. The twist and overlap on my design is intentional. I tested various ways, and found that the overlapped cords provide some amount of "damping" to the motion, that I like. The relatively short travel motion has not lead to any issues on the cord wear. The outer casing is durable, and there is not that much stress on the touching surfaces.

What is your current thought about this platform now that it has been two years. Thanks in advance.

Sadly, I have not used them in over a year. My current training space is not big enough to have the rollers available along with my rocker plate and smart trainers. But I still love the overall feel of them for the longer Z2 rides I do on Sundays. The overall freedom and feelings the closest to outside that I have found for inside riding. I'm rebuilding my basement and may soon have room to use them again. As a future goal, I also plan to try fitting the Cycleops PowerBeam Pro resistance so I can use it on Zwift. But that's is something for after getting my basement finished.

Hey. Found it just now when I'm starting to built my own. Where did you get the material for rollers themselves so they rotatable smoothly with low noise? Any more details on construction size etc pls?

Sorry for the delayed reply. The wheels I use are simple Roller Blade Wheels, that include bearings installed and they roll very smoothly. It's best to get the "harder" ones that are 80A (a hardness rating) or higher number. That means they hold shape well and won't get "flat spotted" easily. I think I have used a range of sizes from 75mm up to 85mm diameter, and the harder ones mentioned above. Beyond that, just about any ones you want can work. There are a wide range of sizes and colors to make if fun as well.

Thanks for the idea to build this for my Krietler rollers. I have the sled built but can't seem to find the Black ABS pipe anywhere near here. What size pipe did you get to cut to fit? And where did you find it? Thank you in advance.
@Chader9

It is simple plumbing pipe. The most common is PVC plastic which is white or gray. That black pipe is ABS plastic. You can find it at most hardware stores. I used 2" [50mm] inside diameter pipe. But anything from 1.5" [38mm] to 3.0" [75mm] should work fine.

Is that small braking system enough? Can it emulate a fev % uphill?

I don't have any hard specs on capability of the magnetic resistance. But it is very notable when used at the max setting (closest to the roller). Combining that will a higher gear on the bike requires a notable level of work. It's been years since I've used them regularly, so I am sorry I don't have more detailed info. But as far as adding resistance to aluminum drum rollers goes, this is the best way to do it that I have found.

What is the material you used for all the 1x2 and 1x4 pieces?

Just simple wood / lumber. Cheap pine probably.
