1--Aluminium mesh for the bees in the summer feeder glass bottle would be good if the aluminium were not toxic. Some miniscule portion of it may dissolve in the sugary water and harm humans from the honey made by the bees. Aluminium is suspected to cause alzheimer's or parkinson's etc. The mesh type ladder may be made by cotton cloth or wooden twigs used in brooms etc. 2--newspaper for winter feeder has the drawback that the bees will incorporate some of the printing ink used in the newspaper which might be toxic for the bees, lowering their immunity 3--Manmade chemically refined sugar itself may lower bee immunity unless raw unrefined sugar is used in the feed 4- The stability of the hive is not understood as the base legs seems to not be shown 5--How the moisture collection and drainage system using the cloth wick system is designed has not been explained since there is no drainage pipe outlet. 6--The roof lid is pretty long to easily lift by an older beekeeper and could give back/spine problems. A hinged roof lid as used in designs of top hives could be thought about 7-Dimensions of the hive, specially wall thickness and roof thickness for braving the elements during extreme summer and winter temperatures for different latitudes must be specified. 8--Captioning and proofreading of the video might help generate more views from around the world. I could not understand or spell the type of insulation shown in the roof lid at the beginning of the video.

For a feeder, take a large jar, pierce the lid in multiple spots with a thumbtack, then fill with a sugar solution and invert the jar on a rack in the hive. Small droplets will form under the lid, which the bees can collect.

I clicked on your video because I love the top bar method and want to do it myself but this is just amazing! I never thought about what to do about feeding them and this just clinched it for me!

Been building top bar hives for about 5 years now myself, and I have had the same bees in one for 3 years now, in northwest indiana!. winter temps got down to 14 below zero last year, and now my main hive is overpopulated. Love your show.

Good video. I like your spaced top bars. I use these on a couple of my hives. Just wanted to say, that I have found that during a heavy honey flow one can place a langstroth super on top and allow the bees more room and place to store extra honey. works well. Michael, in Kentucky

Put your feeder behind the follower board to prevent robbing. The entire jar fits into the hive full of sugar water.

Just a suggestion but I think a stainless steel screen will be better. I now in brewing aluminum is a big no no, they say aluminum has bad stuff that leaches out. Now maybe that only happens when heated. Not sure. But better safe then sorry. Nice build 😊

Boys, with the way you made the top bars allows you to grow more than one colony in every beehive, because if you close each family at 7-8 top bars, it will allow you to put upstairs stores to increase your honey production on this way . With a strong honey flow, the bees instinctively stores the honey upwards. Just think about putting up stores on the top bar.

One thing you might try, drill a hole in the center of the top bar preferably the size of a bamboo barbecue skewer and push it through to the bottom of where the comb is to be built or you can push it through the comb after it is built and it will add stability o the comb for moving or tilting!!!!!!!!! And they are cheep😊

On the underside of the top bar, I wax in a two inch honeycomb plastic covered in beezwax so the bees have something to instantly start the honey/wax production

One downside to your bottom feeder will be the wax debris falling into it when the cappings are removed. Looks well made good luck.

I use the same basic feeder system, I use quart wide mouth mason jars, 4 per bottom board. I also use a jar as a SHB trap.

you could think about making a 3 in thick block of fondant in the same shape as the triangle comb and place one on each end of colony in contac with active combs pulling an empty combs during winter allowing fondant to always stay in contac with the bees this might work much better then dry sugar that will fall all over comb as bees chew holes thru newspaper.

My first thought was that the spaces between the top bars will prevent the bees from sealing their space, for climate control, as they usually do when they close the gaps with propolis.

High entrances cause heat loss. End entrances make it more difficult to inspect the brood nest, compared with side entrances with tandem followers. Top bar hives should NOT have gaps between bars - that defeats the whole point of them, which is to retain heat better than a conventional hive.

Side entrance would be better. The feeding system will still drown some bees.

The large sugar feeder on top might get real messy .and the ants will really love you .Why not just not take so much honey ,or put a couple filled frames in the old chest freezer for later if you need it,Just saying,but real nice design anyways.

Hi There, I love the quality of the work, and the feeder is genius, I would love to hear how that works out. A question if I may, and a possible suggestion Question, why the spacing b Tween the bars, I thought one of the main points behind the TBH was that she he Bars formed a roof above the bees, and did not let light in, your design lets as much light in as a traditional Hive. Also if you made the roof angle higher, you could store your Hive tools in the roof. I do this with both my hives, the tools are cheap and this way there is no chance of cross contamination between hives. Love the videos, thank you for sharing

Wool works way better then goose down and can be a big mistake to use for bees .Goose down can trap moisture in and hold it instead of breathing like wool does once goose down gets any type of wet it done it looses it ability to insulate . Just switch to wool .

We have bees coming in the spring. I am leaning towards a top bar. But heard they are better for producing bees not so much honey. The horizontal langstroth is my next choice. What do you think about these two hives. Love watching you on the show. Cheers from Canada!

I work on a project in Zambia where we introduce beekeeping. Some hives produced by local carpenters have gaps/spaces between the pine planks where bees could also pass. That doesnt look ok to me. Please give your opinion on this.

How do you destroy Varro mite? Surely you need a screen at the bottom of the hive to allow the mites to fall out?

A season has pretty come and gone since you posted the video, how did the bottom feeder work? I'm interested in doing something like that, but I'm also concerned with how it could be insulated during hte winter.

So... why are you feeding bees in the summer? Shouldn't they be out foraging for nectar & pollen? No flowers in your area? Are they on the social safety net? Oh, I know, it's a soup kitchen for bees. Cool!
