DIY Octagon Palletwood Birdhouse

Back in the spring I made this octagon shaped birdhouse from oak pallet wood. I lost some of the footage, so unfortunately I couldn't roll out this project video as a full tutorial and opted for a process video with music instead. After the birdhouse was hung, we had a family of small finches that came to live in the house, and it was a lot of fun for us to watch them fly in and out every day as they built their nest right in our backyard.

Is it possible get to get your angle cut dimensions for the multi-level roof. I think I can get the main structure to come together and match with the roof. Love the design!

Looks nice. I like the dado for the floor and side assembly alignment and gluing. Some improvements to make it a better nest box from a biological perspective are holes in floor for drainage and upper side for ventilation. Entrance should be drilled at an angle to drain water out. NEVER put a perch on a birdhouse, birds do not need it but predators use it when getting at the eggs or young.

Thanks for the comment. Never knew about the perch, very interesting and a nice thought for the next one. Haven't had many drainage issues, probably because it isn't water tight to begin with but your point is a def consideration in the next design.

Thanks! Yes, we had 2 birds move in this past year. They have since moved on and I recently saw another bird trying to set up shop. It’s very popular haha.

What were your angles on sides and roof. That’s the problem I’m having . Thanks

sides need to be beveled at 60. Roof pieces also need to be beveled at 60 but in addition tapered to an angle that depends on how steep you want the roof to be. The top of the side pieces should be beveled to match the angle of the roof's slope for the best fit. Probably best to search for some specific plans, there must be hundreds around. Most of these diy videos are good to see different methods of work but short on giving precise instructions. Some very unsafe methods of cutting bevels on the table saw appear in some videos.
